Zululand: Unfiltered and unfenced
When I think of Zululand, what comes to mind are vast expanses of untamed wilderness, teeming with an incredible diversity of animal and plant life. It’s like stepping into a world untouched by time, a place where nature reigns supreme. Zululand is a land of contrasts – from the rugged mountains to the lush green valleys, from the flowing rivers to the vast savannahs.
Exploring Zululand is a journey of discovery, a chance to experience the untamed beauty of Africa in its purest form. As I venture deeper into this wilderness, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. Every turn brings new surprises – a herd of elephants grazing peacefully, a pride of lions basking in the afternoon sun, a leopard stealthily making its way through the tall grass.
But Zululand is not just about the wildlife. It’s also a place rich in culture and history. The Zulu people, known for their warrior spirit and rich traditions, have called this land home for centuries. Their vibrant culture is evident in the music, dance, and art that permeate every aspect of life here.
One of the key attractions of Zululand is the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, home to the famous Big Five – elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffalos. It’s a place where you can witness the circle of life unfolding before your eyes, where predators hunt and prey try to survive. It’s a place where you can witness the raw power of nature.
But Zululand is more than just its famous park. There are countless other hidden gems waiting to be discovered – from the stunning beaches of the Elephant Coast to the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie looking for a thrilling adventure or a nature lover seeking tranquility, Zululand has something for everyone.
So, if you’re looking for an authentic African experience, Zululand is the place to be. Immerse yourself in the untamed beauty of this land, and let it leave an indelible mark on your soul. Explore its vast wilderness, connect with its vibrant culture, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Zululand awaits, ready to enchant and captivate you like no other place on earth.
If you’re looking for a unique and exhilarating wildlife experience, there are some hidden gems in Northern KwaZulu-Natal that you simply cannot afford to miss. These lesser-known game reserves offer an up-close and intimate encounter with nature that will leave you in awe.
Imagine going on a pangolin walk, where you can actually walk alongside one of nature’s most elusive creatures. It’s an opportunity to witness these fascinating animals in their natural habitat and learn more about their behavior.
Or how about camping in unfenced Big Five country? Picture yourself sitting around a campfire under a starry sky, listening to the sounds of the wild as you drift off to sleep. It’s a thrilling experience that will make you feel truly connected to the African wilderness.
If you’re more of a water lover, you might want to consider an elephant-monitoring boat safari. This unique adventure allows you to observe elephants up close as they roam the banks of the river. It’s an incredible sight that will stay with you forever.
These game reserves may not be as well-known as some of the larger ones in the country, but that’s part of their charm. They offer an escape from the crowds and a chance to immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of nature.
So why not add these six incredible game reserves to your itinerary? They promise unforgettable experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.

Hey there! Let me tell you a cool story about the elephants of Lake Jozini. So, these elephants used to live in the southern part of the Pongola Game Reserve. But then, in 2016, there was a really bad drought. And guess what these smart elephants did? They decided to cross the Pongola River and move to the area below the Lebombo Mountains. And you know what? They’ve been living there ever since!
When I stepped off the bakkie, it was almost midnight. The moon was almost at its highest point in the sky, and I could see the outline of the vegetation in Manyoni Private Game Reserve. Karen Odendaal, the reserve manager, told us to listen. There was a lot of noise coming from the other side of the bushes – rustling, breaking branches, and scraping. It was so loud that it almost seemed reckless. I whispered to Karen, asking if it was the buffalo we had encountered earlier. But she told me that it was the pangolin. We all laughed at the absurdity of the sound, but also because we were excited to finally see this ancient animal for the first time.
So there I was, deep in the wild, following the trail of an amazing creature called the pangolin. Telemetry had brought us this far, but to truly experience its magic, we had to rely on our own two feet. Pushing through the thick undergrowth, we finally stumbled upon the incredible sight.
There it was, the pangolin, nestled inside a broken tree stump. Its fascinating body covered in tough, scaly armor reminded me of a giant pine cone. Curious ants scurried around, seemingly unfazed by the presence of this peculiar creature. As I watched, the pangolin’s tongue darted in and out, capturing unsuspecting insects.
Observing the pangolin’s movements, I couldn’t help but recall a writer’s imaginative description of this enigmatic animal. It compared the pangolin to a drama geek in high school, always lurking in the shadows, elusive and misunderstood. And just like the drama geek, the pangolin possessed an undeniable allure that captivated my senses.
Wow, Manyoni is home to a whole bunch of incredible animals! They’ve got lions, which are so majestic, and cheetahs too. Did you know that Manyoni has one of the highest populations of cheetahs in the whole country?
I saw something really cool when I was there. There was this pangolin, and it was doing something pretty funny. It was slurping ants like it was drinking a milkshake! I couldn’t believe it, the ants must have tasted really good. It was such a unique and amazing creature, I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. After watching for a while, we got to work on changing its tracking device.
Manyoni is all about protecting animals, especially the endangered ones. Their motto is “Saving endangered species for endangered spaces.” Isn’t that awesome? They focus on creatures like black rhinos, wild dogs, cheetahs, and pangolins. But they don’t stop there, they also care about the smaller animals like red-billed oxpeckers, brown hyenas, and leopard tortoises. These species are on the edge of disappearing, so Manyoni works hard to make sure they’re safe and sound.
When I think about Manyoni, I can’t help but reflect on the rich history of conservation in Zululand. It all started with Operation Rhino back in the 1960s, led by the incredible Dr. Ian Player. That was the spark that ignited the flame of conservation in this region. And since 2005, the Black Rhino Expansion Project has carried on that legacy. It’s truly inspiring.
I found myself in this area searching for something special – game reserves that aren’t as well-known as Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and Phinda, but still have a strong focus on conservation. To my delight, I discovered a hidden treasure trove of reserves stretching from the Tugela River to Mozambique. These reserves offer an extraordinary opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and experience something truly transformative. And the best part? It’s surprisingly affordable.
As I delved deeper into these reserves, I couldn’t help but notice a growing trend – a desire for unfiltered and immersive encounters with wildlife. People are craving experiences that go beyond the usual tourist attractions. They want to connect with nature on a deeper level, to be moved and inspired by the beauty around them. I knew I had stumbled upon something special.
These encounters are more than just a simple safari. They have the power to change you, to open your eyes and touch your heart. It’s the kind of experience that stays with you long after you’ve left. And this transformative travel trend is only going to become more popular in the years to come.
I couldn’t wait to explore everything Manyoni had to offer. The wildlife, the landscapes, the people – it was all waiting to be discovered. And I knew that by venturing off the beaten path, I would find something truly extraordinary.
In Manyoni, something incredible is happening. Rescued pangolins are making a comeback, something that hasn’t happened in 70 years. It’s a fascinating sight to behold, witnessing these once-endangered creatures establish themselves in their natural habitat once again.
A shining example of this wildlife resurgence can be found in Somkhanda Game Reserve, located just 40 kilometers from Manyoni. This reserve has achieved something extraordinary. It all began with the introduction of rhinos through the Black Rhino Expansion Project in 2008. Once they arrived, the presence of other essential species soon followed. Today, Somkhanda is proudly known as a Big Five reserve, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in nature and take part in exciting monitoring activities like tracking wild dogs and dehorning rhinos.
But there’s something else that sets this reserve apart from the rest. It’s the rustic unfenced campsite, a hidden gem in the heart of a Big Five reserve in South Africa. This campsite has become a sensation, attracting adventurers from all over. What makes it so special? Well, picture this: as the sun sets and darkness creeps in, night-roaming leopards stealthily pass through the camp. The resident pride of lions roams nearby, their majestic presence echoing in the night. And if that’s not enough, elephants frequently come by, drawn to the campsite in search of the life-giving water source. It’s a truly awe-inspiring experience, where humans and wildlife coexist in perfect harmony.
‘Lots of folks visit here to try out their equipment before they embark on a big adventure,’ Lodge Manager Lundy Bredberg shared with me. The 4×4 tracks, spanning 20 kilometers in total, are quite a draw in and of themselves. ‘You won’t come across any other vehicles here. If you do spot something, it’s just going to be you and the magnificent wildlife,’ Lundy affirmed enthusiastically.
Tawny, Wahlberg’s, and brown snake eagles are quite common in Zululand. When I went on my journey, each reserve left its own unique impression on me. Bonamanzi, a family-friendly reserve near Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, stood out with its 35 kilometers of self-driving trails. These trails offer the chance to spot four out of the Big Five animals (excluding lions). Meanwhile, Ndumo Game Reserve also offers similar trails, but what really sets it apart is its incredible birding walks. With a staggering 427 species, Ndumo almost matches the number of bird species found in the massive Kruger National Park!
Out of all the parks that I visited, I must say that the Babanango Game Reserve was the most fascinating. It’s a relatively new reserve that has recently been opened. When I explored the area, I found two lodges and an incredible outdoor education center. They were all situated in a picturesque landscape, surrounded by breathtaking views and expansive grasslands.
What really impressed me is that there are even more exciting developments underway at the reserve. There are plans to build two more lodges in the near future. And within just three and a half years, you’ll be able to spot all members of the famous “Big Five” – lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo – in addition to cheetahs and wild dogs. It’s incredible to think about all the wildlife that will thrive here.
But that’s not all. The Babanango Game Reserve has some truly unique experiences planned for visitors. You’ll have the opportunity to go on fly-camp sleepouts, which means spending the night in a temporary campsite out in the wild. Imagine falling asleep under the stars, surrounded by the sounds of nature.
For those seeking a more adrenaline-filled adventure, the reserve will also offer thrilling canopy tours, where you’ll zip line through the trees and experience the reserve from a different perspective. And if you’re a fan of horse riding or mountain biking, you’ll be pleased to know that these activities will be available too.
All in all, the Babanango Game Reserve is a truly remarkable place. It’s a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. With its stunning lodges, incredible wildlife sightings, and exciting activities, it’s a destination that promises an unforgettable experience.
Have you ever heard of rhino dehornings? They are becoming more and more common in Zululand. It’s a remarkable experience to witness one, filled with both uplifting and emotional moments. If you’re interested, you can arrange to see a dehorning at either Somkhanda or Manyoni.
During my journey, I had the opportunity to visit the White Elephant Bush Lodge in Pongola Game Reserve. The lodge is situated overlooking the Jozini Dam, which is home to a stunning population of over 900 crocodiles. On the other side of the dam, you can see the magnificent Lebombo Mountains, lush and grand. One morning, I joined a knowledgeable and passionate elephant monitor named Suzette Boshoff on a boat trip across the dam. After an hour, we approached the shore, and right on cue, eight elephants emerged from the undergrowth. Suzette explained, ‘They come down to the water every morning at 11. It’s like clockwork, they’re incredibly punctual.’ She also mentioned how we spot elephants on 90% of our boat safaris, and we encounter large herds about half of the time. It truly was a breathtaking experience.
Approaching the elephants with utmost silence, we inched closer, cameras at the ready, just a few meters away from the shore. More elephants emerged from the trees, captivating us as they continued to appear. It was a mesmerizing sight to behold. “These two herds are converging,” Suzette whispered. In awe, we watched as the number of elephants multiplied. After just thirty minutes, there were now 60 elephants right before our eyes.
The baby elephants playfully slid around in the mud, while the adolescent ones engaged in friendly wrestling matches in the water. Amidst this lively scene, the matriarch cautiously approached us, sniffing the air, unsure of our presence.
In Babanango, you can find breathtaking viewpoints spread across the reserve. As I marveled at these views, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the history that makes these sightings of large herds even more extraordinary. It was in 1997, exactly a century after the last elephant was spotted in the area, that 17 elephants were reintroduced from Kruger National Park. Today, the biosphere surrounding the lake boasts almost 100 elephants, with three game reserves, namely Pongola Game Reserve, Pongola Nature Reserve, and Royal Jozini in neighboring Eswatini, coming together to protect these majestic creatures.
On our boat ride, the gentle breeze guided us as we leisurely passed the elephants. We would then navigate upstream and glide past them again, each encounter becoming more enchanting. Behind the elephants, the morning sun illuminated the Lebombo Mountains, as if meticulously choreographed by nature itself. As we bid farewell to the elephants, a collective sigh escaped from all of us, as if we were all silently acknowledging the profound significance of what we had just witnessed.
Throughout my trip, I couldn’t help but think about these things. Do people even realize that Manyoni is almost as good as the Sabi Sand experience, except without the leopards, and at a fraction of the cost? Have the real camping enthusiasts discovered that Somkhanda offers a thrilling Big Five wilderness camping experience? And how is it possible that the elephant experience at Pongola isn’t on every wildlife lover’s must-do list? This part of South Africa, with the magnificent Drakensberg nearby, stunning beaches along the coast, and the picturesque Zululand hills as a backdrop, might just be the ultimate holiday destination in the country. As I made my way back to King Shaka airport after an unforgettable two weeks, I couldn’t help but wonder: when can I come back?
Wow, have you heard about the wonders of Babanango Game Reserve? Recent studies have found that this place is buzzing with biodiversity. It’s no wonder why, considering the unique vegetation types and species that call this reserve home. And get this – there are even species here that you won’t find anywhere else in the world! Isn’t that amazing?
One of the reasons for this incredible diversity is the 23 kilometers of river frontage on the White Umfolozi River. It’s like a bird paradise! Speaking of birds, birdwatchers will be thrilled to know that Babanango Game Reserve is a top birding hotspot. You see, this area is a meeting point for birds from the north and the south. It’s like a grand reunion for feathery friends!
And it’s not just any old birds that you’ll find here. We’re talking about species that normally reside in southern regions, but they push their way up to Babanango. On the flip side, there are also species that usually hang out in East Africa, but they make a pitstop at Babanango on their way south. It’s like a bird version of a cultural exchange program!
But the bird fun doesn’t stop there. Babanango Game Reserve is also home to wetland species, making it one of the most bird-rich areas in the whole of Africa. The number of bird species here is truly mind-boggling. You’ll be amazed at all the unique winged creatures you’ll spot during your visit.
I keep a watchful eye on the elephants all day long.
‘The most ambitious conservation project ever’
What is it?
Noah’s Ark is a revolutionary sanctuary being developed in Zululand, with the goal of providing protected environments for endangered species from across the globe. By using geodomes with controlled temperatures, they aim to recreate the climate conditions found in various ecosystems. The estimated cost for this endeavor is R100 billion.
I’m excited to share with you all the incredible things that we can expect from this amazing project! Prepare yourself for the world’s biggest aquarium, along with state-of-the-art geodomes featuring innovative smart glass and advanced climate control systems. The most challenging part? The Polar Dome, designed to recreate Arctic conditions. Construction is set to kick off in 2021, and they’re aiming to have it all completed within the next five years. Can you imagine the wonders that await us?

But wait, there’s more!
I have another amazing place to share with you. It’s called Manyoni Private Game Reserve.
Perfect For
Spotting Predators
Manyoni was created in 2005 by combining several farms, hunting reserves, and eco lodges. Seventeen landowners came together to establish this incredible reserve. It wasn’t until six years later, when lions were introduced, that Manyoni officially became a Big Five reserve. The reserve currently houses more than 30 lions across its vast 23,000-hectare property, and you won’t find any traces of previous farming activities. Instead, what you’ll discover is a breathtaking landscape that stands out as its most outstanding feature.
I want to tell you about Manyoni. It’s an amazing place that came to life in 2005 when 17 landowners came together and transformed a bunch of farms, hunting reserves, and eco lodges into something truly special.

Let’s talk about the Pongola Game Reserve.
What’s great about it? Well, it offers the best water-based sightings, or in other words, it’s the perfect spot if you’re looking to see wildlife around water.
You might be wondering, is that really true? I admit I had my doubts too. But guess what? My experience proved it right. I went on two boat trips, and both times, we saw around 60 elephants. I stayed in the southern section of the reserve, which is split by the Pongola River.
Do you want to have an unforgettable adventure in South Africa? Then look no further! Join me on the elephant experience at White Elephant Bush Camp. It’s an incredible journey where we’ll see stunning wildlife like buffalos, waterbuck, hippos, and crocodiles. The cost is R660 per person.
If you’re a nature lover and enjoy birdwatching, I recommend the sunrise and sunset river cruise from Nkwazi. It’s a fantastic opportunity to observe various birds and other wildlife. We even had the chance to spot three of the Big Five animals. The price for this experience is only R395 per person.
Don’t miss out on these incredible adventures. Book your spot now and get ready for a journey you’ll never forget!

What Makes Us Special:
Incredible Scenery
Thanks to the support of a generous German investor, our 22,000-hectare reserve is able to prioritize conservation and the well-being of the local community above everything else. Unlike other places, maximizing profits is not our main goal. Instead, we focus on preserving our natural environment and making a positive impact on the surrounding community. This unique approach, combined with our breathtaking panoramic views of grassland valleys and towering rocky formations, all interwoven by the mesmerizing White Umfolozi River, makes Babanango Game Reserve one of the most captivating reserves you’ll ever encounter.
