Your Favorite Writing Spot: Harties
Whenever I visit Hartbeespoort, it fills me with an amazing sense of joy. It’s like a magical place that washes away all my worries and makes my heart feel light. Each time I go there, it’s like a big, welcoming hug that makes me feel safe and happy.
As an author, when I’m in the right place, it helps me overcome the difficulties I encounter when writing – those periods of time when my words don’t flow. Being in the right place reminds me that there are certain aspects of life that should be exclusively mine.
Hey there, my pals! Can you believe it? For over 20 years now, me, my family, and my friends have been heading to this great spot called Hartbeespoort Dam. And let me tell you, it’s become our very own “Little Paris”. Now, you might be wondering where we got that nickname from. Funny story, really. So, my buddy Xoli, he went on this amazing adventure and got to perform in a play all the way in Paris. When he came back, he showed us these incredible pictures of this famous thing called the Arc de Triomphe. It’s this massive, iconic monument that’s all about celebrating Napoleon’s victories. But here’s the kicker. When Xoli finally made it to Harties in 2001, he saw a smaller version of that same monument right there on the wall by the Hartbeespoort Dam and the Crocodile River. Now, it’s not quite as fancy as the real deal in Paris, but to us, it’s like Harties has this fantastic split personality. It’s a mix of nature and the modern world, blending the urban and rural, and even a little bit of France with South Africa. How cool is that?
I love Hartbeespoort. It’s my go-to place when I need some peace and quiet to let my thoughts flow onto paper. And the best part is, it’s just a short drive away from my home in Johannesburg, only 75 kilometers. So convenient!
I’ve been to Harties six times this year already, either with my friends or family. There’s something magical about the place that keeps drawing me back. Maybe it’s the roaring rapids of the Crocodile River, or the calming boat rides on the dam. Or perhaps it’s the exhilarating ride up the cableway to the top of the majestic Magaliesberg mountains, where you’re treated to a breathtaking view of the beautiful Highveld landscape.
When I find myself in Hartbeespoort, I feel like I’m in a different world. It’s the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I can immerse myself in the tranquility of nature and let my imagination run wild. Even the birds here seem to inspire me with their vibrant colors, from midnight blue to scarlet and gold.
Hey there! Let me tell you about my recent trip to ‘Little Paris’ with my friend Xoli. We decided to spend the weekend at a tented camp, and it turned out to be an incredible experience.
Our day started with a refreshing hike through the beautiful forest. The air was filled with the melodious calls of birds, and the vibrant greenery all around us was simply mesmerizing. The towering trees stood tall with straight trunks and had striking black branches that formed a unique umbrella shape. It felt like stepping into a magical wonderland.
Oh, and have you heard about Niq’s latest book? It’s called “Black Tax: Burden or Ubuntu?” Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?
When it comes to accommodation, I have to mention Meerhof Lodge. It’s my absolute favorite! They have luxurious self-catering cottages right next to the dam. You can stay in one of their cottages for just R800 per night, and each cottage can accommodate two people. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
