Hey there! Have you ever heard of Worcester? It’s this amazing place that’s like a hidden valley of plenty! I want to tell you all about it because I think you’ll love it just as much as I do.
First, let me start by saying that Worcester is a beautiful city located in the heart of Massachusetts. It’s known for its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and friendly community. When you visit Worcester, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a whole new world.
One of the things that makes Worcester so special is its abundance of natural beauty. From lush green parks to sparkling rivers, there’s no shortage of scenic spots to explore. Imagine taking a peaceful stroll through the picturesque Elm Park, or enjoying a picnic by the tranquil shores of Lake Quinsigamond. Nature lovers will be in paradise here!
But Worcester isn’t just about nature. It’s also a city with a rich history and a thriving arts scene. The Worcester Art Museum is a must-visit for art enthusiasts, with its impressive collection of European and American masterpieces. When you journey from Cape Town to Worcester, you might miss out on the hidden treasures this town holds if you’re in a hurry. Some people even dismiss it without considering that each corner might have something special waiting to be discovered.
Worcester is located in the Breede Valley, which is known for its breathtaking views. Despite its small size, this town has a lot to offer. Unfortunately, many people from outside are unaware of what goes on here or why more than 120,000 individuals have chosen to make it their home.
Most travelers passing through Worcester only associate it with the new mall on the N1. However, this is a narrow view that fails to capture the true essence of the town. Worcester and its people are part of the Cape’s well-kept secret. After spending a few days in this abundant valley, I found countless reasons to come back.
Discovering the Worcester Museum
Let me tell you about this museum that allows you to connect with the history of the town. It’s important to understand where it all comes from, and this museum provides the background information you need.
This museum is like a cultural exhibition that shares the history of the region. It starts with the indigenous hunter-gatherers who lived here long ago and goes on to tell the story of the trekker farmers who later moved into the area. You’ll learn all about what they did and how they lived.
When you visit the museum, you’ll get to explore a fascinating collection of antiques. The museum showcases the rich history of the region, with a particular emphasis on its agricultural roots. As you wander around the grounds, you’ll come across a traditional Cape farmyard filled with well-preserved ox-wagons and other historical artifacts.
However, the real magic happens when you step outside. The farmyard isn’t just a static display; it’s a vibrant and interactive experience. Each dwelling within the farmyard has been carefully designed to recreate the agricultural tasks of the past. You’ll see people using the structures to perform tasks just as they were done many years ago.
Hey there! Let me tell you about a fascinating place. In this historical museum, there are replica houses where people used to make butter and other dairy products. Check out the floor made of old apricot pips and beeswax! It’s easy to clean and doesn’t leave any odor, perfect for those occasional milk spills.
Inside one of the houses, you’ll find an old dwelling where they still make Boer soap using traditional methods. They even roast coffee beans over the coals and make their own candles. But wait, there’s more! The museum also produces its own range of witblits, a local drink with a rich history of distilling in South Africa.
When you visit the museum, be sure to swing by the gift shop on your way out. They have a delightful selection of witblitz, soap, coffee, and candles for sale.
Not a fan of witblitz? No worries! The gift shop has plenty of other souvenirs to choose from, so you can find something perfect to take home with you.
Discover the Barn Art and Glass Gallery and Coffee Shop
You won’t want to miss the Barn Art and Glass Gallery and Coffee Shop, located in a charming restored 1789 wine cellar. Lorna and David Reade, two talented artists who call Worcester their home, have created a wonderful space for art and relaxation in the heart of town.
Imagine stumbling upon the entrance to a seemingly ordinary barn, only to discover that it holds more than just your everyday coffee shop. It’s nothing short of a treasure trove – a working studio right in the heart of Worcester.
Welcome to The Barn, your ultimate destination for a steaming cup of coffee and a mouth-watering lunch. Step inside this cosy haven, housed in a beautifully refurbished Cape Dutch cellar, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by the captivating artwork of Lorna adorning the walls. The ambience here is simply delightful, making it the perfect spot to take a break.
And when the weather is just right, you can sit outside, savoring your treats while catching glimpses of the glass blowing studio tucked away at the back. David Reade, originally hailing from England, embarked on his glassblowing journey under the tutelage of a master glassblower – none other than Micheal Harris from the Isle of Wight Studio Glass.
In 1984, I went on a holiday to South Africa. I loved it so much that I decided to make it my home. To pursue my passion for art, I built a new studio in Worcester in 1986. It was a big step, but I was ready for the challenge.
My wife Lorna and I were committed to creating something special. So, we bought an old barn from 1790 and renovated it. It took a lot of hard work, but we were determined to turn it into something beautiful. In 1992, we opened The Barn cafe, which has since become not only our home but also our studio.
Over the years, our studio has grown and evolved. We now have a team of skilled glassblowers and polishers working with us. Lorna always says that it takes six years to truly master the art of glassblowing. It’s a craft that requires patience and dedication. We take pride in the fact that everything in our studio is made by hand, from start to finish. Even the glass we use is made right here, in our studio, using sand.
We are involved in every step of the production process. From designing and shaping the glass to polishing and finishing each piece, we put our hearts into our work. This hands-on approach ensures that every piece we create is unique and of the highest quality.
We feel incredibly lucky to do what we love every day, in the beautiful surroundings of our home and studio. We pour our passion into every piece we create, and we hope that it brings joy to those who appreciate our art.
In my studio, I want to tell you about some of the amazing things that happen with glassblowing. It’s such an intriguing craft! I even got my hands dirty building furnaces to melt glass, and as they burn, they give the studio a constant radiance. When you visit The Barn for lunch or a coffee, you’ll find it fascinating. It’s not just the spectacle of watching glassblowing in action but also the expertise behind it that makes the final pieces so beautiful. Forget about the enchantment of a crystal ball – there’s something even more mesmerizing when you see the craftsmanship of our work.
A special place for caring
Did you know that Worcester is the care capital of South Africa? Many people don’t. We have the National Institute for the Deaf and the Innovation for the Blind right here. So when you think you know this town, remember to consider how important it is in providing support for South Africa’s disabled community.
During my visit to Innovation for the Blind, I was amazed by the invaluable work they do to empower individuals and help them navigate a challenging job market that often neglects the disabled. What struck me the most was their dedication to providing educational opportunities for the blind. They have a comprehensive training program that includes computer skills, and what’s even more impressive is that the students themselves teach and support each other.
Seeing these individuals educate one another is truly inspiring. They are overcoming obstacles and equipping themselves with new skills that will undoubtedly enhance their lives. A shining example of this is Joseph Matheatau, who not only became South Africa’s first accredited blind barista but also took on the role of training other blind individuals to become baristas.
I’m Joseph, and I take pride in serving the finest coffee in Worcester.
Even though I can’t see, I navigate my way around the barista machine like a talented pianist on a keyboard. Instead of relying on my eyes, I rely on my other senses. When I texture the milk, I feel its consistency to determine if it’s perfect for a latte, flat white, or cappuccino.
Experience the Thrill of Mountain Biking
If you’re in search of adventure and love the outdoors, Worcester is the place to be. Its scenic mountain locations offer endless opportunities for thrilling activities. And if you stay at Golden Valley Lodge, you’ll have direct access to the trails right outside your door. Get ready to dive into the excitement!
When I visited, the managing director of the hotel, Keenan Bergins, took me on a tour of the beautiful trails that wind through the fynbos slopes. These trails are perfect for mountain bikers of all skill levels. And if you prefer to ride on the roads, the ones that lead into the valley are safe and peaceful in the mornings, making for a serene and scenic ride.

Discovering more
Protea and its nectar
The Protea is a truly South African gem, constantly fascinating with its beauty. It’s not just a flower; it’s part of an unparalleled flora. But did you know that its nectar can be distilled to create a top-tier Vodka?
One day, as I was walking through the beautiful Breede Valley mountains that surround my home, I came across a sweet moment of nature. A small, colorful bird called a sugarbird was delicately sipping the nectar from a protea flower.
Being a programmer, I have always had an affinity for the intricate and fascinating world of fermentation. As a child, I would eagerly ferment ginger beer and delight in the process of brewing and distilling.
I’m always inspired by Christopher’s enthusiasm when he talks about the art of distilling. He describes it as amazing and says it took him several tries to get it right, like Proteus was meant to be.
But what can you expect from this vodka? Well, that’s up to you to decide. Christopher just wants people to enjoy it, and I have to say, it’s a fantastic addition to summer cocktails.
Let me introduce you to Six Dogs Distillery.
This gin has gone beyond the borders of South Africa, but it started off in a humble place. The distillery was a shed where six dogs used to sleep. They converted a copper geyser into a pot still, and a fire underneath provided the heat. Quite a unique setup!
I found myself in the midst of a serene scene, encircled by a pack of six dogs, huddling together to ward off the chilly air. Little did I know that this peculiar encounter would lead me to a remarkable discovery. As time unfolded, an unexpected gem emerged—a gin distillery that has garnered fame across 22 different countries, its bottles gracing the shelves of bars and cafes around the globe.
This captivating distillery finds its home in yet another picturesque valley of the region. Here, amidst the splendor of nature, they cultivate their Karoo botanicals and gather fresh ingredients from neighboring farmers. Tucked away among the majestic mountains, the path that leads to this hidden sanctuary might leave you questioning if you’ve taken the right turn.
Welcome to an extraordinary place, where the Six Dogs reside, waiting eagerly to welcome you. Three magnificent great Danes, overflowing with friendliness, eagerly await your arrival. Your experience here promises to be both enjoyable and educational. Nestled in a tranquil corner, our distillery affords you the luxury of an intimate tasting, where you’ll be introduced to our handcrafted collection of five exceptional gins.
Among our illustrious offerings, lies a London-dry style gin, meticulously infused with the finest Karoo botanicals, such as the rare Karoo thorn blossom. Pouring every ounce of passion, we devoted over two years of relentless effort perfecting this sensational recipe; a labor of love that will undoubtedly speak volumes and captivate your senses.
Guess what? The Six Dogs Gin is not just any ordinary gin. It took a couple of tries for the distillers to get it just right, and boy, was it worth the wait. Let me tell you about their first creation, the Six Dogs Blue Gin. During a trip to Indonesia, the talented distiller, Charles Bryant, and his wife stumbled upon something amazing – blue tea flower. This flower is not just any flower; it’s often used in Indonesia as a tea and is known for its antioxidant properties. And here’s the best part: they decided to infuse it into their gin, giving it a distinctive blue color. But don’t worry, it’s not going to have the same effect as a certain blue pill.
Looking for something a little lighter? Well, they have three other fabulous gins for you to try. One of them is the Blue Light, also infused with the blue tea flower. This one has a lower alcohol content at 24%, but it still has all the flavors you’d expect from a top-notch gin. It’s a real winner!
And that’s not all…
Right nearby, just a stone’s throw away from Six Dogs, you’ll find De Wet Cellar. It’s one of the many incredible wine farms in the area, and it’s definitely worth a visit. The tasting room is a delight, so stylish and inviting. You can try any wine you like and indulge yourself in the wonderful flavors of the region.
When it comes to wine, there’s a whole world of options to explore. From light whites to full-bodied reds, and even sweeter varieties like muscadel or Cape ruby port, the choices are endless.
But let me tell you about something special – De Wet Cellar’s Mash-up range. These wines are a true gem, offering a white blend, red blend, and rosé that are simply fantastic. Whether you enjoy them with a meal or on their own, they’re sure to delight your taste buds.
Now, let me take you to Leipzig.
Just a stone’s throw away from De Wet Cellar, Leipzig is a farm that exudes elegance and produces exceptional wines. In fact, their wines are so good that even Queen Elizabeth herself paid a visit during her grand tour back in 1947.
The funky artwork hanging on the walls of the farm gives it an extra touch of charm and personality. Leipzig, located in the picturesque Nuy Valley, is a stunning boutique wine farm. They have transformed the old cellar into a magnificent wedding venue. What makes it truly special is the unique art hanging on the rustic walls, adding to its overall charm.
I found the white wine that Queen Elizabeth drank while I was clearing out the cellar. It was sitting next to the new vintage on the right.
Tasting the wine here is a relaxed and unhurried experience at this peaceful farm. Although they are more well-known for their red wines, don’t forget to sample their entire selection. Since this is a small winery, their production is limited, and their bottles often sell out quickly. This hidden treasure is the perfect place to visit, as the scenic drive will lead you away from the busy main roads.
Willow Creek Olive Estate
This valley has more than just wine and spirits to offer. It is a culinary delight, and at Willow Creek Olive Estate, they have been producing internationally acclaimed olive oils since 1999.

Nuy on the Hill
Nuy Winery’s tasting room and restaurant is located at the top of a hill, at the end of the beautiful Nuy Valley. It’s the perfect place to conclude your day of tasting adventures.
When I look out from Nuy on the Hill, I’m greeted with a breathtaking view of the mountains. It’s a perfect spot to take in the natural beauty that surrounds me.
At Nuy Winery, we work hard to produce top-quality grapes. In fact, we grow a whopping 10,000 tons of grapes every year. However, we only select 3% of those grapes to use in our winemaking. The rest are sold off to other vineyards. We take great care in choosing the best grapes for our wines, ensuring that every bottle is of the highest quality.
Speaking of wines, we have a fantastic range that caters to wine drinkers of all tastes. One of our most prized creations is our muscadel. This wine has achieved legendary status among wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs. It’s a true gem that we’re proud to offer.
If you’re a fan of muscadel, you’re in for a treat when you visit the Breede and Robertson Valleys. These regions are known for producing exceptional muscadel wines. In fact, South Africa is one of the few places in the world where you can find this unique and delectable style of wine. It’s a hidden treasure among wine lovers, and we’re proud to be part of its legacy.
When you visit our winery, you’ll experience the passion and dedication that goes into every bottle of wine we produce. We’re committed to keeping the tradition of muscadel alive and thriving in this beautiful valley.
Have you ever heard of Nuy Winery? They’re known for their famous muscadel. Imagine a sweet fortified wine that is a true delight for your taste buds. Nuy Winery’s muscadels are so good that they have won awards. In fact, some of their vintages are highly sought after by wine connoisseurs. The reason behind their success is the high sugar content, which allows these muscadels to age gracefully.
After a long day of exploring, why not settle down for a delicious meal at Nuy Winery? Their kitchen serves up hearty dishes that are sure to satisfy your hunger.

It’s a must-visit spot for when you’re in need of a break from wine (if that’s even possible!).
