Wine & Wheels: Cycling Stellenbosch
Once upon a time, I found myself in Stellenbosch, a charming town in South Africa known for its captivating landscapes and world-renowned wines. As I delved into my adventurous spirit, I discovered an exhilarating way to explore this delightful place – cycling. And let me tell you, it was an experience like no other.
Pedaling through Stellenbosch, I felt a sense of liberation. The warm sun kissed my skin as I glided past sprawling vineyards and majestic mountains that painted the horizon. The crisp breeze whispered through my hair, refreshing and invigorating me. It was as if nature itself was guiding me through this picturesque journey.
As I cycled along, I stumbled upon one winery after another, each one beckoning me with its inviting charm. I couldn’t resist the temptation to stop and sample their exquisite wines. The vineyards welcomed me with open arms, inviting me to indulge in their rich history and passion for winemaking. With every sip, I discovered the unique flavors and stories hidden within each bottle.
But the allure of Stellenbosch extended beyond its wineries. The town itself has a vibrant energy that cannot be ignored. Quaint cafes and bustling markets lined the streets, offering tantalizing culinary delights and local treasures. I couldn’t help but immerse myself in the lively atmosphere, eager to taste the diverse flavors and experience the vibrant culture this place had to offer.
As the day turned into dusk, I hopped back on my trusty bicycle, feeling a bittersweet mixture of exhaustion and contentment. The memories I had created during my cycling adventure would forever be etched in my heart. Stellenbosch had captivated me with its natural beauty, its velvety wines, and its lively spirit.
If you’re looking for a unique and immersive way to explore this enchanting region, I highly recommend hopping on a bicycle and embarking on your own wine and wheels adventure. The freedom and exhilaration that come with cycling through Stellenbosch are unmatched. Trust me, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.
So, why not take a break from the ordinary and let Stellenbosch enchant you? Discover the magic that awaits as you pedal your way through breathtaking landscapes and savor exquisite wines. Wine & Wheels is a journey that will awaken your senses and leave you craving for more. Embrace the double delight of great wine and the freedom of cycling – a truly unforgettable experience awaits you in Stellenbosch.
When I think of Stellenbosch and the surrounding areas, the first things that come to mind are peaceful wine farms, streets lined with trees, and relaxed students. But let me tell you, this is not a place for sluggards, as I discovered for myself.
If you decide to study at Stellenbosch University, you’ll quickly become familiar with the usual places – the Botanical Garden, the trail behind the Danie Craven rugby stadium that leads to the Ertjieskloof Dam, and the Rooiplein. However, if you’re someone who enjoys getting away from the crowds, there are other hidden gems just a short distance away that are definitely worth exploring as well.
To explore some of the lesser-known areas, I reached out to the experts at the Stellenbosch Adventure Shop. They were incredibly helpful and provided us with a guide and bikes for a 20km ride to Boschendal. If you’re not an experienced cyclist or if you want an easier ride, you can choose an e-bike and breeze through the 20km without breaking a sweat.
Our journey started in the town center and took us up into Idas Valley. It only took us 10 minutes to get to the quiet country roads, and soon enough, we found ourselves on peaceful trails that would make any town jealous. We were grateful for the well-maintained paths provided by the Stellenbosch Trail Fund. The best part? There was plenty of shade, so we didn’t have to worry about getting too hot.
As I pedaled through the winding roads, I couldn’t help but notice the breathtaking sights that surrounded me. Dams glistened in the sunlight, bridges stood quietly, and the jeep track and single track led me through a picturesque journey. Eventually, my exploration brought me to the Banhoek Conservancy in Kylemore.
The conservancy holds a special place in the hearts of locals, who lovingly refer to it as their hidden treasure. Tourists and residents alike are drawn to its trails, captivated by its charm. And it’s no wonder why – the air is crisp, the sky is a brilliant blue, and it feels like a sanctuary all to ourselves.
I was in awe of the incredible cycling trails that awaited me. There were options for every level of rider – some easy paths to leisurely cruise on, a few thrilling switchbacks, and even challenging rocky sections that put my skills to the test. As I pedaled on, I was mesmerized by a gentle river crossing and a curious family of blue wildebeest observing me from a distance.
When we were heading to Boschendal, we had a really big thirst. We were in luck because Boschendal caters to all kinds of people, not just those who want to taste wine. They even have activities for cyclists and hikers.
The activities and experiences manager, Mandisa Zama, told us, “Boschendal is for the whole family. Kids can have fun outside, and parents can go do some wine tasting.”
For families who want to explore the mountains together, there are also hiking and cycling trails that are suitable for all ages. They also offer horse riding and farm tours. Plus, in the coming years, they plan to have blueberries that guests can pick themselves.
After a day filled with both delicious food and valuable knowledge, my companions and I made our way to the cozy Kylemore Guesthouse. We were hoping to recharge our energy for the upcoming hike, and this charming accommodation seemed like the perfect place to do just that. Situated conveniently close to the conservancy and a quick drive away from the neighboring wine farms, it provided an ideal base for us to discover the beauty of the area.
A Refreshing Adventure
After a restful night, I joined Uhlan Lackay, a knowledgeable guide from Pniël Cultural and Environmental Hiking Tours, to explore the beautiful Cathedral Waterfalls. As we embarked on our journey, Uhlan delighted us with captivating tales about the region, its inhabitants, and its rich history. It’s truly a treat to hike alongside someone who knows every nook and cranny, especially when that person is a true local.
We encountered graceful elands observing us cautiously from a distance as we continued our ascent up the mountain. Thankfully, having a guide was indispensable. The mountain presented some challenging sections, and slipping or falling would certainly put a damper on our adventure.
The cold water sent shivers down my spine as we finally arrived at the waterfall, but that didn’t discourage one of our group members from stripping down to his shorts and taking a refreshing shower. I doubt many others would be that daring. As we made our way back down the trail, completing the loop in approximately four hours, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of enrichment, as if we had become wiser during our journey.
Our exploration of Banhoek concluded with a visit to the Chilli Oil Taste Kitchen, where we indulged in a delightful tasting session of different chili oils before treating ourselves to a well-deserved lunch.
Gazing at the breathtaking mountains and lush forests surrounding us, I couldn’t help but ponder the fact that if this place were located in any other country, it would likely be overrun by tourists, drawn to its abundance of activities. However, here on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, it remains a hidden gem, known only to those fortunate enough to discover it. And yet, we barely scratched the surface of its wonders.
A Roller Coaster of Flavors
If you want to take your taste buds on a wild ride, I’ve got the perfect suggestion for you. Brace yourself for the ultimate adventure and try the chili oil milkshake at the Chilli Oil Taste Kitchen at Banhoek.
I have to admit, I’m torn about recommending it. This unique concoction evokes such a whirlwind of emotions that it’s hard to put into words. When I took my first sip, I was greeted with a cool and satisfying sensation. But then, without warning, the chili kicked in like a fire-breathing dragon. My tongue desperately clamored for relief, and that’s when I reached for the milkshake. Ahh, sweet relief, but only for a fleeting moment before the chili unleashed its fury once again. It was like a battle between my taste buds and the rebellious chili, and this cycle repeated until I drained every last drop from the towering glass.
The meal itself was a perfect accompaniment to the Banhoek chili oil, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, when it comes to that milkshake, I’m at a loss for words. It’s a perplexing mix of terrible and amazing. Try it for yourself to solve this enigmatic culinary puzzle.
