In the year 2000, my parents, Niels and Penny Verburg, became the proud owners of a small 17-hectare farm in Bot River, nestled on the untamed slopes of the Houw Hoek mountains. They recognized the potential for cultivating exceptional Shiraz grapes in this magnificent setting. That same year, they harvested their first batch of Shiraz and by 2004, they produced their inaugural vintage using grapes from our very own farm.

The name ‘Luddite’ pays homage to the 19th-century workers who famously sabotaged labor-saving machines. For my parents, this name embodies their dedication to crafting handcrafted wines with fervor and commitment, rather than relying on mechanical processes.

In just a short span of time, Luddite has made a name for itself as a producer of exceptional wines, crafted with utmost integrity and a light touch. And now, it’s my turn to carry forward this legacy. In 2017, I joined my father to work alongside him, adding a feminine influence to the winemaking process.

“The wines have truly blossomed with this new feminine touch,” says my father, Niels, with pride.

I wanted to break away from the boring and snobbishness of traditional wines. So, I came up with ‘It’s a Shiraz’ in 2017. It was an experiment for me, something different. I made up my mind about making this wine the moment the grapes arrived. I had learned so much from watching my dad.

Once the wine was made, I let it sit in barrels for a year. Then, I aged it in the bottle for another year. “You can drink it now, but I’m all about making wines that get better with time,” that’s what I told myself.

My father’s newest wine, the Luddite Shiraz 2015, comes from a harvest that marked the beginning of a long, dry period in the Western Cape. The heat and lack of rain towards the end of the season resulted in Luddite’s smallest harvest yet, producing only 2.3 tons of grapes per hectare. Despite this, there is a silver lining – the fruit has an incredible concentration of flavors.

Throughout the winemaking process, there were various combinations of wood that contributed to the creation of this exceptional wine.

Alice’s It’s a Shiraz 2017, priced at R200 per bottle, as well as the Luddite Shiraz 2015, which costs R600, both pair wonderfully with slow-roasted lamb, steak, and spicy ratatouille.
