My Experience of Horse Riding in Hogsback
Let me tell you about my incredible experience of horse riding in Hogsback. It was a day filled with excitement, wonder, and a true connection with nature.
When I arrived at the stables, I was greeted by the friendly staff who introduced me to my horse for the day. It was a beautiful horse with a shiny brown coat and gentle eyes. I instantly felt a sense of trust and companionship between us.
As we set off on our adventure, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of nerves and anticipation. The trail we were about to embark on was hidden within the majestic forests of Hogsback. The trees towered above us, creating a natural canopy that filtered the sunlight and cast dancing shadows on the forest floor.
The sound of hooves on the forest path filled my ears as we made our way deeper into the wilderness. The crisp air was invigorating as it brushed against my face, and I could smell the earthy scents of the forest.
Along the trail, we encountered various wildlife such as squirrels darting between the trees and birds singing their melodic tunes. It felt like we were part of a harmonious symphony of nature, blending seamlessly with our surroundings.
As I looked around, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the sheer beauty of Hogsback. This hidden gem nestled in the mountains was a true paradise. Every turn on the trail revealed a new breathtaking view, from cascading waterfalls to lush meadows dotted with wildflowers.
My horse guided me effortlessly through the terrain, its hooves expertly navigating the rocky paths and crossing shallow streams. I felt a sense of gratitude for these magnificent creatures who carry us on their backs and allow us to experience the world from a different perspective.
During the ride, I had the opportunity to connect with fellow horse riding enthusiasts, sharing stories and laughter along the way. It was a reminder of the joy that comes from connecting with others who share a common passion.
The time seemed to fly by, and before I knew it, we were back at the stables. I dismounted and bid farewell to my trusty companion, feeling a mix of elation and a hint of sadness that the adventure had come to an end.
Reflecting on my experience of horse riding in Hogsback, I can say with certainty that it was an unforgettable journey. The bond I formed with my horse, the stunning landscapes I witnessed, and the sense of freedom and exhilaration will stay with me forever.
If you’re looking for an experience that combines a love for horses with the beauty of nature, then horse riding in Hogsback is the perfect choice. It’s an adventure that will leave you with lifelong memories and a deeper appreciation for the wonders of our natural world.
I wanted to experience the thrill of riding a horse again, so I decided to take my daughter on a horse trail. It had been many years since I had been on a horse, but the memories of that exhilarating ride on the beach in Wales were still fresh in my mind.
The last time I rode a horse was way back in 2005. I remember it like it was yesterday. The wind was blowing through my hair, just like in those Timotei shampoo commercials. I felt so alive as I cantered along the cold, wet beach, my body firmly planted in the saddle, legs hugging the horse’s padded tummy. My husband stood on a rugged cliff, cheering me on with playful shouts that echoed off the crashing waves. But boy, did I pay the price the next day. I could barely walk!
However, that one unforgettable experience wasn’t enough to extinguish my love for horseback riding. So, I made up my mind to get back in the saddle and share this incredible experience with my daughter.
Here we are, in the year 2016, and there are so many things I don’t have, but one thing I always have is a passion for adventure. I remember telling my youngest daughter, Lydia, who has loved horses since she was four years old, “Sure, we can do that!” She wanted to go on a horse trail, and when we finally found the perfect one – with two days of horseback riding and a night sleeping under the stars – it felt like there were limitless opportunities for enjoyment and satisfaction.
I found myself on the Menziesberg one early evening.
I was headed to Terra-Khaya, north of Hogsback village, at the end of a dirt road. The person who started it all, Shane Eades, is truly remarkable. Terra-Khaya is his home and sanctuary – a place where eight dogs, four puppies, nine horses, six cats, many chickens, a rooster, and a group of dedicated individuals working on various projects all coexist. Just the week before, Shane organized the Festival of Trees, where over 2,100 young trees were planted and 300 volunteers came to lend a hand. What surprised me the most was the peacefulness that enveloped the place despite the constant activity. In the two days that I spent there, I felt free to be either sociable or introverted as I pleased.
There’s always another hill to climb and more rocks to navigate, isn’t there? But let me get straight to the point and tell you all about the one-of-a-kind horse trail at Terra-Khaya. It’s all about natural horsemanship, which is basically a fancy way of saying that the relationship between humans and horses is built on trust. And boy, let me tell you, trust is going to be important on this trail.
Before we hopped on our horses, our guide for the day, Shane, gave us a little briefing. He told us that his horses are different. They actually respond to voice commands. So if you want to slow down, you just calmly say “whoa” like a little purr. And if you want your horse to go faster, you make a sound like “clk, clk”. No whips or spurs needed here. These horses are guided by a special rope halter instead of a metal bit. It’s all about treating them with kindness and respect.
Now, let me tell you about my horse, Baloo. This guy was massive. He weighed a whopping 700 kilograms! No wonder he had such a big appetite. But despite his size, he was surprisingly gentle and obedient. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe as I climbed onto his back.
I had the pleasure of riding with two young men, Gauthier ‘Gucci’ Amedro and Tiziano ‘Titto’ Iosca. They were full of charm and looked dashing as they rode alongside me. Gucci, with his cowboy style, shouted out energetic ‘yee-hahs’ that filled the air with excitement. It felt like we were in the Wild West. Gucci wore a Hiawatha jumper, and Titto looked impeccable in his perfectly pressed Italian clothes. Any mother would have been proud to have them as suitors for her daughter.
As we rode, Lydia confidently sped ahead, disappearing into the distance. Meanwhile, I struggled to keep up, trailing behind them and eating their dust. Shane, our guide, skillfully moved between the front and the back, leading us through breathtaking landscapes. We encountered hills, valleys, rocky paths, and open fields. I was content to ride at my own comfortable pace, and Baloo, my trusty companion, matched my steady speed without complaint.
Gucci, Origin, and Barok – these are the names that come to mind when I think of our incredible adventure. In a place of sheer beauty and tranquility, I turned to Lydia, curious about her experience. “Are you enjoying this holiday with me?” I asked, only to receive a lighthearted response. “Do you have to be so stickie-outie?” she teased. It was a moment that reminded me of a comical Don Quixote, riding his old and worn-out horse, Rocinante. Gucci and Titto chimed in, playfully adding that they wished their mothers could have joined us. Lydia’s smile told me that she understood the sentiment behind their words.
As we made our way down a steep section of the mountain, I couldn’t help but lean back, trusting in Baloo’s expertise. I knew he had the skills to navigate this terrain without slipping or stumbling. At one point, the slope was so steep that it felt like we were part of a physics experiment. Yet, Baloo, with his natural instinct, effortlessly led us down using switchbacks. It was as if he knew every inch of this mountain like the back of his paw.
When the weather took a turn for the worse, I made the decision to forgo sleeping under the stars and instead stay overnight in the village of Elundini. ‘Trust me, you don’t want to be out here when it’s freezing cold,’ I warned myself, just as the complaints were about to escape my lips. The cozy comfort of our sleeping bags out in the open was simply not an option. However, reaching Elundini meant spending more time on our bikes, which actually presented us with the chance to try night riding.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine considering a horse’s eyesight until the sun dipped below the horizon and enveloped us in the darkness of Lushington, an ancient forest brimming with mystery and an air of uncertainty. The path ahead was treacherous, with boulders strewn about and gullies carved by the meandering tree roots. In that moment, I entrusted my fate to Baloo, allowing him to guide us through the labyrinthine forest.
I rested my weary head against his warm mane, seeking solace and security in his presence. As we pressed forward, the sounds of the forest enveloped me. Branches rustled and brushed against my body, their whispered murmurs echoed in my ears. The unmistakable snap of twigs startled me, echoing through the silent night. And beneath it all, the rhythmic plonk of hooves resonated, assuring me that progress was being made.
Intermittently, slivers of moonlight filtered through the dense canopy above, casting a mystical glow upon our surroundings. The fleeting beams morphed into ethereal streaks, glimmering like celestial messengers. They danced across my field of vision, reminding me that even in the darkest of times, there is always a glimmer of hope.
This stretch of the journey marked the end of the first day, a testament to our resilience and determination. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, I found solace in the symbiotic relationship between horse and human, and it was in these moments that I realized the true power of trust and unity.
As I emerged from the forest, I was greeted by a breathtaking sight – the night sky adorned with countless stars, twinkling brightly against the backdrop of the darkened world. In that moment, a profound sense of tranquility enveloped me, filling my heart with a peace like I had never felt before. I turned to my mother and whispered, ‘I feel so at peace, Mom. The only sound that reaches my ears is the gentle rhythm of the horses’ hooves, occasionally accompanied by the soothing melody of a nearby stream. It’s incredible how aware these magnificent creatures are of their surroundings. They remain calm and composed, unperturbed by any sudden noises or disturbances, unlike me.’
There was a handsome little boy named Shiva who joined us on the trail. We strolled along the main road of Elundini village and suddenly stumbled upon a blazing fire. The owners of Elundini Backpackers, Lieve Claessen and Elliot Sonjani, came to our rescue as we, tired travelers, found refuge. Their children, Elena and Lucas, couldn’t contain their enthusiasm and bounded around us. After an exhilarating day, Lydia and I snuggled into bed and fell asleep to the soothing sound of horses munching on lush green grass.
As we embarked on our journey, the horses would occasionally pause for a bathroom break. It was during these moments that Shane imparted a valuable tip – to slightly lift ourselves from the saddle. We followed this advice diligently, taking every opportunity to give our four-legged companions some relief. Little did I know, horses also used this time to leave their mark on the trail. Shane revealed that Baloo, in particular, had a habit of carrying out this routine at a specific spot. True to his words, as the afternoon sun started to cast golden rays through the foliage, Baloo halted at the entrance to his abode. Gently, I lifted myself from the saddle, paying homage to his sacred territory.
Hey there! Let me tell you about this incredible adventure I had with my friends Lydia, Titto, and Gucci. We stumbled upon a hidden gem—a secret waterfall tucked away on a trail. The locals kept its location top secret, making it even more exciting to discover.
Get ready for your own adventure!
If you’re looking to plan a trip like ours, here are some helpful tips. We chose to fly from Cape Town to East London with FlySafair. It was a great deal at only R2400 per person for a round trip. Once we arrived, we rented a car from First Car Rental for R1054. Having a car gave us the freedom to explore the beautiful surroundings. To get to the waterfall, we took the R346 road that led us straight to Hogsback. You can check out FlySafair and First Car Rental at flysafair.co.za and firstcarrental.co.za.
Things to keep in mind
When it comes to horse riding, you don’t need fancy gear. I just wore a pair of comfortable stretchy jeans and hiking boots. The riding hats are provided by Terra-Khaya, so no need to worry about that. But let me give you a word of advice: don’t bring a huge wheelie suitcase like I did. The terrain from the car park to your bed is up and down, and dragging a heavy suitcase can be quite a challenge. Instead, pack your personal belongings in saddle bags. I used two cloth shoe bags to keep everything together, which I squeezed into the available space.
If you want to increase your chances of sleeping under the stars, it’s best to go horse riding in the summer. The weather is warmer and more pleasant. But if you decide to go during the rainy season, be prepared for some muddy adventure. After passing through the village, you’ll hit dirt and Hogsback mud is sticky! We actually got stuck at one point, so be mindful of that.
What to bring
Make sure to pack clothes suitable for both cold and warm weather. You never know how the temperature might change throughout the day. Don’t forget to bring a swimming costume in case you come across any water bodies. And it’s always a good idea to bring a scarf and beanie to keep yourself warm in case it gets chilly. Lastly, don’t forget a warm sleeping bag and some snacks. Chips, nuts, and chocolate make great trail companions and are always nice to share with fellow riders. So stock up!
