Amazing Weekend Getaways near Johannesburg for Less Than R600 per Person
Hey there! Looking to go on a budget-friendly weekend getaway near Joburg? Well, you’re in luck! I’ve got a fantastic list of 10 amazing self-catering cottages and cabins that won’t break the bank. Best part? They’re all under R600 per person per night and have been personally recommended by our trusty Getaway crew.
1. Cheerio Trout Fishing & Holiday Resort, Magoebaskloof
Cost: Just R700 per unit (sleeps two)

Hey there! Let me tell you about these awesome cottages I found. So, there are five cottages in total, and three of them are made of face-brick. Now, if you’re someone who is really into design, you might not be too thrilled about the furniture in the lounge. But here’s the thing, these cottages are perfect if you’re on a budget and have a family that loves to stay active.
These cottages are super clean and they provide a great escape without breaking the bank. They even have facilities for fishing and various children’s games. How cool is that?
The cottages are scattered all over the well-kept lawns above the trout dams, and let me tell you, each one is completely unique. You won’t find two that are the same. And guess what? You can check them out online before making a decision. Pretty convenient, right? Just be careful not to mix them up with Cheerio Gardens next door. While the gardens there are famously beautiful, Cheerio Resort also has its own special charm with a fantastic special-event venue and two self-catering cottages. Talk about options!
2. Kingfisher Cottage, Waterberg
If you’re interested in staying at the Kingfisher Cottage, you’ll be happy to know that it starts at just R500 per person for sharing. That’s a great deal, if you ask me! To make a reservation, you can give them a call at 0825708474.
Hey there, let me tell you about an amazing place called Kingfisher Cottage. It’s located in the Waterberg, only three hours away from Joburg, and it’s surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the Palala River. When you step inside, you’ll find a spacious bushveld home that’s perfect for a relaxing getaway.
This cottage is part of the Palala River Lodges collection and it’s truly something special. It has three bedrooms, a cozy fireplace, and an open-plan living area that’s perfect for spending quality time with friends and family. And if you need a bit more space, there are two en-suite rondavels nearby, so everyone can have their own little oasis.
When you’re not lounging by the fireplace or enjoying the comfort of your own private rondavel, you can head outside and take a dip in the on-site pool. And if you’re a nature lover, you’re in luck! There’s a bird hide just a short walk from the lodge, so you can get up close and personal with some of the area’s beautiful feathered friends.
One of the best things about staying at Kingfisher Cottage is the opportunity to explore the 3000-hectare reserve. Grab a picnic basket and hop in the car – there are plenty of scenic lookout points and 4×4 routes to discover. Keep your eyes peeled for waterbuck, giraffe, and warthogs as you drive through the stunning landscape.
And if you’re in the mood for some relaxation, you can simply sit back on the lodge porch and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Waterberg hills. You might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a harrumphing hippo – they’re quite the chatterboxes!
