Our Eternal Connection to Parys
Yes, I’m talking about Parys, that small town in South Africa that seems worlds away from the bustling cities and modern conveniences we’re accustomed to. But let me tell you, there’s something truly magical about this place. Something that keeps drawing people in, like a moth to a flame. It’s not just a town; it’s an experience, a feeling, a connection that lasts long after you’ve left.
Parys has a way of transporting you back in time, immersing you in a world where the simple pleasures reign supreme. Calmly strolling down its charming streets, you can’t help but be captivated by the rich history that seeps from every crack and crevice. It’s as if the walls themselves have countless stories to tell. And they do, if you’re willing to listen.
But it’s not just the nostalgia that makes Parys so special. It’s the way it embraces the present while cherishing the past. The town’s vibrant energy and creative spirit are infectious. Whether you’re exploring the local art galleries, indulging in delicious cuisine at one of its quaint cafes, or simply taking a leisurely hike along the Vaal River, Parys has a way of captivating you in every moment.
And speaking of the Vaal River, it’s hard to put into words the pure bliss of spending a lazy afternoon, gently drifting along its tranquil waters. The sound of the river lapping against the boat, the warm sun kissing your skin, and the laughter of loved ones filling the air – it’s moments like these that remind you of what truly matters in life.
Parys is a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to reconnect with yourself and those around you. It’s a place to gather with friends and family, to share stories and create lasting memories. It’s a refuge from the fast-paced world we live in, where you can truly be present and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you.
So, if you’re yearning for an escape from the ordinary, a break from the hustle and bustle, I invite you to discover Parys. Let its charm and enchantment captivate you, and its timeless allure become etched in your heart. Because in Parys, we don’t just visit; we become part of something greater – a tapestry of memories that will stay with us always.
Welcome to my blog where I’ll be discussing the importance of exercise.
Nobody can deny that exercise is essential for a healthy mind and body. But what exactly makes exercise so crucial?
First and foremost, exercise keeps you in shape. It helps you build strong muscles and bones, and it keeps your heart healthy. When you engage in physical activity, your body is challenged and forced to adapt, making you stronger and more resilient.
But exercise isn’t just about physical health. It also has incredible benefits for your mental well-being. Regular exercise releases endorphins, those magical chemicals that make you feel good. They boost your mood, reduce stress, and even help combat anxiety and depression.
Exercise is also a fantastic way to improve your cognitive function. When you work up a sweat, you increase blood flow to your brain, which enhances your memory and concentration. It’s like giving your brain a power boost to help you think and learn more effectively.
When you exercise, you’re not just improving your physical and mental health. You’re also developing valuable life skills. Exercise teaches discipline, persistence, and the ability to set goals and work towards them. It helps build confidence, boosts self-esteem, and fosters a strong sense of accomplishment.
So how much exercise should you aim for? Well, the general recommendation is to get at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise most days of the week. This can include activities like brisk walking, biking, or even dancing.
Remember, the most important thing is to find an activity that you enjoy. Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. It can be fun and exciting if you find something that you love doing. Whether it’s joining a sports team, going for a hike, or practicing yoga, the options are endless.
Ultimately, exercise is a gift that keeps on giving. It’s not just about physical fitness; it’s about holistic well-being. So get moving, and experience the incredible benefits that exercise brings to your mind, body, and soul.
Whenever I have some free time, I love escaping to the Free State town. It’s such a great place to visit, especially for those of us living in Gauteng. There’s always something new and exciting happening there, and it’s not just known for its meteor crash site.
Hey there, I’m Matthew Sterne, and I’ve got some words and photos to share with you about this incredible spot.
In Parys, there may not be an Eiffel Tower as iconic as the one in Paris, but the town has its own unique charm.
It’s a sunny Tuesday morning at Liewer Koffi in Parys, and the regular crowd starts to arrive. Hardus Engelbrecht walks in with a broken wrist, a result of a bike accident over the weekend. He jokingly attributes it to his attempt at reliving his youth. Andries Vrey, the local council member, joins him outside on the veranda, discussing the ongoing water issues that plague their small town. Just then, a talented artist rushes in, carrying a beautiful painting she created for the Hutton Art Gallery located at the back of the coffee shop. Ilze Botha, the friendly owner behind the counter, introduces her to everyone, sharing a lighthearted story about how she found solace in Parys after losing her husband. Laughter fills the cafe.
I love stepping into Liewer Koffi. It’s like entering a little oasis of tranquility right in the middle of the bustling city. As I walk through the doors, I’m greeted by a symphony of colors and scents. Vibrant jams and fresh organic vegetables are neatly arranged on the counter, while playful ferns hang whimsically above them. The soothing notes of jazz fill the air, creating a relaxing atmosphere that instantly puts me at ease.
Ilze, the owner of this delightful coffee shop, is a true embodiment of style and grace. She effortlessly glides around the space, sporting a pair of trendy Salomon running shoes and topping it off with a fedora that adds a touch of cool to her ensemble. Her presence alone exudes an air of confidence and warmth, making me feel instantly welcome.
It’s not surprising that Liewer Koffi was recently recognized as one of the top 100 coffee shops in the country. The Restaurant Association of South Africa bestowed this prestigious honor upon them, and it’s a well-deserved achievement. The entire team at Liewer Koffi takes immense pride in this recognition, and it’s evident in every cup of coffee they serve.
Let me tell you, the rubbish collection in Parys is quite unique.
‘Hey! We go for coffee at Ilze’s, not that other coffee shop,’ artist-activist Deon TerBlanche says to me while holding a cappuccino. As the sunlight slowly enters the shop on Bree Street, more people from the area start coming in, casually greeting each other as if they were in their own living room – Parys’ own version of Central Perk. Ilze keeps track of everyone’s bills by writing them on the wall behind her using chalk.
Hey, guess who just walked in? It’s Frances Hutton, the owner of the gallery. She’s always full of energy and has a passion for her honey products that come straight from her farm. Frances tells me that propolis is like a magic ointment. It can fight off just about anything, no exceptions. She introduces me to Zelda Bezuidenhout, who is sitting at a nearby table. Zelda is quite the famous writer here in Parys. She’s got a way with words like no one else.
And now, here comes Belinda Elrix, also known as Madame Kiki. She enters the room with a certain grace, her bag hanging elegantly from her elbow. Madame Kiki’s photographic studio is right next to the coffee shop, and let me tell you, it’s a treasure trove of history. You can transform yourself into a Voortrekker, a minister, a war nurse, or even an explorer. In her studio, there’s a framed photo that says, “There are hidden treasures in the familiar shadows of our small town.” Those words really speak to the magic that can be found right here in Parys.
When you’re in Pont de Val, you have the opportunity to explore the beautiful Vaal River on a river cruise. These cruises can accommodate up to 12 people, creating a fun and intimate experience. If you’re looking for a more exclusive outing, you can also enjoy a luxurious dining cruise designed for up to six people.
As I chat with the locals at Liewer Koffi, I notice that many of them consider themselves ‘expats’. Hardus, for example, commutes to Johannesburg every day for work. It’s just a little over an hour’s drive away. This town has experienced a boom in recent times, with the antique markets gaining popularity and giving Parys a new identity. As a result, Parys has become a bustling town.
With the rise of Parys, the spotlight has shifted from Mimosa, resulting in a loss for the once-favored destination. However, this change has brought great benefits to the guest houses in the area. Today, there are a total of 160 guest houses, providing excellent accommodation options.
As Pont de Val is conveniently located only 120km from Johannesburg, it has become a popular destination for weddings and golf enthusiasts. Wedding venues and golf courses have flourished in the area, attracting a diverse crowd.
According to Annemarie, the buzz in town begins on Wednesdays when the golfing crowd arrives, and it continues to grow as the weekend approaches. Parys truly offers a vibrant atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.
When you visit this town in the Free State, there are three things that you absolutely must experience: the river, the dome, and the town itself. The river is an absolute gem, offering incredible whitewater rafting opportunities that are suitable for the whole family. I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon on the river with Graeme Addison, one of South Africa’s original ‘River Men.’ He showed me the ropes and taught me the famous ‘Vaal Shuffle,’ a sideways walk that comes in handy while wading in the river. Then, I had the pleasure of going fly fishing with Anthea Piater in one of her secret spots. She shared her expertise with me, and I even managed to catch a fish or two!
As for the dome, it’s an absolute marvel. This place is a World Heritage site and is home to one of the largest meteors that ever crashed into the Earth. It’s mind-boggling to think about how such an event changed the fortunes of South Africa forever. When you take a tour of the Vredefort Dome, you’re in for a captivating journey through history. You’ll gain a whole new perspective on the world we live in and marvel at the incredible power of nature.
When I’m working with bees and need to check on their hives, I sometimes use a nifty tool called a ‘smoker’. It may sound strange, but it actually helps me keep the bees calm. You see, bees rely on their sense of smell to communicate, and smoke messes with that.
One of the most unforgettable memories I have of Parys involves Frances Hutton and her fascination with bees. It all began as a spontaneous decision for Frances and Pierre Roux van Niekerk, but soon their beekeeping venture spread like wildfire, with people in the area reaching out to them for help with relocating beehives from their properties.
One fine evening on Frances’ smallholding along the Vaal River, I found myself donning a bee suit and joining them in harvesting honey. As Pierre expertly smoked the bees out, the hive burst to life, its buzzing resembling the roar of a revving chainsaw. Pierre couldn’t help but drop comments like, “African killer bees earned their name for a reason” or “This hive is like a loaded weapon.” The complexity of these creatures, he added, was beyond our comprehension.
After successfully retrieving the honey, we wasted no time and hopped onto the back of the bakkie, smoke from the canister trailing behind us like a speeding train.
If you want to explore Otter’s Haunt, you should definitely check out the beautiful riverside walks. The best time to enjoy them is in the morning.
After spending five days in Parys, I started to understand the town a little better. There were hints of historical tension, and the municipality was dealing with water issues. Additionally, there were occasional reports of high levels of sewage in the Vaal River, which sometimes made it unsafe. According to Graeme, an experienced local, we typically have clean water for rafting about 98% of the time. He has seen this firsthand over the past 20 years.
In the small town of Parys, the people were friendly and fascinating. Many of them were expats who had left behind their old lives to start anew. They were entrepreneurs, clever and talented, with a rebellious spirit. Parys offered them a feeling of liberation, where they could walk the streets without fear and enjoy the wide-open spaces that surrounded the town. The river that flowed through Parys, with its breathtaking scenery, misty mornings, and diverse wildlife, added to this sense of freedom. The fact that they had the option to drive into Johannesburg for a day trip, or not at all, only enhanced this feeling. The people of Parys cherished their freedom and understood its value, which created a strong bond between them. It’s not surprising when you think about it, as freedom has always been something that the people of Paris hold in high regard.
Graeme Addison, the mastermind behind “Dances with Waves” rafting tours, has created an exhilarating experience that blends the thrill of navigating rapids with the grace of a dance.
I left my career in landscaping five years ago to follow my passion for coffee. It was a bold move, but one that has brought me great joy and fulfillment.
Imagine a meteor, as big as Table Mountain, hurtling through space at a speed 1,000 times faster than a bullet. When it crashed into the Earth, it caused an explosion of unimaginable power. The impact was so intense that it turned the ground into a liquid, creating ripples like those on a smooth pond. The central mound that rose up from this impact became known as the ‘dome’.
Over time, the ‘dome’ has eroded away, and now the crater is so large that it’s hard to see with the naked eye. When people visit Parys and ask where the ‘dome’ is, the locals tell them, “You’re standing in it!”
