Siba Mtongana
Hi, I’m Siba Mtongana, a TV chef and food writer, and I’m excited to share my thoughts with you! I’m 29 years old and I have a passion for all things food-related. Today, I want to talk about my favorite restaurants, shark-cage diving, and the Tim Noakes diet.
Living in Cape Town is truly a blessing. The first thing that comes to mind when I think about this beautiful city is its breathtaking beauty and the amazing quality of life. Everywhere you turn, there’s something stunning to see. But what really sets Cape Town apart is its status as the food hub of South Africa. The culinary scene here is absolutely phenomenal, filled with a diverse range of flavors and influences. Whether you’re a fan of traditional South African dishes or you prefer international cuisine, Cape Town has it all.
When friends or family visit me from out of town, I always make sure to show them the best that Cape Town has to offer. One of my favorite things to do is take them for a leisurely drive along the Atlantic Seaboard. It’s a scenic route that showcases the natural beauty of the city, with the sparkling ocean on one side and the majestic mountains on the other. It’s truly a sight to behold.
If there’s a neighborhood market or festival happening during their visit, I make sure to take them there. It’s a great way for them to experience the vibrant atmosphere and get a real feel for the city’s energy. And, of course, no visit to Cape Town is complete without indulging in our world-class restaurants. I take them to my favorite spots, where they can savor the incredible food and experience the exceptional service that Cape Town is known for.
Now, let’s talk about shark-cage diving, one of the most thrilling experiences you can have in Cape Town. If you’re an adrenaline junkie like me, this is an absolute must-do. Picture this: you’re submerged in a cage, surrounded by the deep blue ocean, and face-to-face with these incredible creatures. It’s an exhilarating adventure that will leave you in awe of nature’s wonders. I highly recommend adding shark-cage diving to your Cape Town bucket list!
Last but not least, let’s touch on the Tim Noakes diet. This low-carb, high-fat eating plan has gained a lot of popularity in recent years. It focuses on whole, natural foods and encourages the consumption of healthy fats. Many people swear by this diet, claiming that it has helped them lose weight and improve their overall health. However, it’s always important to consult with a healthcare professional before making any drastic changes to your diet.
So there you have it – a glimpse into my love for Cape Town, my favorite restaurants, the thrill of shark-cage diving, and the ever-controversial Tim Noakes diet. I hope you enjoyed this little chat and maybe even found some inspiration for your next adventure!
I have a list of my favorite restaurants that I just have to share with you! Let’s start with the Grand Café in Granger Bay. It’s the perfect spot for some weekend sundowners. The atmosphere is amazing, and you’ll love relaxing while sipping on your favorite drink.
If you’re in the mood for something delicious, how about Reuben’s at the One&Only? Their pork belly and duck confit are simply to die for. The flavors are incredible, and you’ll leave feeling completely satisfied.
Are you a fan of Asian cuisine? Then you must try Nobu. They serve the most amazing Asian tapas dishes. The combination of flavors and textures will blow your mind. It’s a culinary experience like no other.
For a taste of Italy, look no further than Tuscany Beach in Camps Bay. Their steaks are juicy and tender, and their seafood pasta is a true delight. It’s the perfect place for a romantic dinner or a special occasion.
I can’t talk about my favorite restaurants without mentioning Willoughbys. This place is a sushi lover’s paradise. They have the freshest fish and the most creative sushi rolls. It’s a must-visit if you’re in town.
If you’re craving some fish or seafood, you have to try Wakame. They have an incredible selection of dishes, and the quality is always top-notch. You’ll feel like you’re dining by the ocean with each bite.
Last but certainly not least, the Fat Cactus in Gardens. This place has a welcoming atmosphere and serves delicious Mexican food. From tacos to burritos, they have it all. You’ll leave with a smile on your face and a satisfied tummy.
If you’re looking for a great spot to enjoy sundowners with a view, I highly recommend the Grand Café in Granger Bay. Their outdoor seating area is perfect for watching the sunset, especially on a Sunday afternoon. Even if you don’t drink alcohol, they have a variety of virgin cocktails that are just as tasty. Make sure to try their refreshing granadilla and mint concoction!
One event in Cape Town that I never miss is The Good Food and Wine Show. It’s an annual extravaganza of culinary delights. If you’re a foodie like me, you’ll be in heaven. There are endless stalls offering mouthwatering dishes and incredible wines. It’s a must-visit for any food lover.
When it comes to my culinary idols, I have a few favorites in mind. Jamie, Nigella, Ina [Garten], and Delia Smith are the stars that inspire me in the kitchen.
In my pantry, I always make sure to keep a stock of canned tomatoes. They’re versatile, and I also keep a variety of canned beans, pastes, rice, and maize meal. Veggies are a must as well.
When I’m in the mood for a fantastic curry, I know exactly where to go – the former Passage to India in Tableview, now known as The Indian Chapter with Prim Reddy. It’s my go-to place!
Whenever I dine there, I can’t resist ordering the Tandoori chicken. My husband, Brian, usually goes for the butter chicken. He always ends up wanting a taste of what I’m having, but I’m protective of my food, especially the paratha bread!
I’m a big fan of the Banting diet, also known as the caveman’s diet. It’s a popular choice among people I know. I might be a bit old-fashioned, but I prefer the approach of focusing on low glycemic index (GI) foods rather than completely cutting out all carbs. I believe in choosing high-quality carbs instead.
On Sunday mornings, I make sure to prioritize two things: church and family time. And of course, we always enjoy a delicious feast together!
When it comes to TV shows, my taste has evolved over time. I used to love watching The Fixer, but lately, I find myself drawn to cooking shows, JimJam (the cartoon channel), and the Trinity Broadcasting Network.
As for Oscar Pistorius, I don’t feel qualified to pass judgment on him. That’s a job best left to those who have the expertise and knowledge to do so.
Once I’m done here, my next project involves creating and brainstorming recipes for some upcoming events, including the Namibia Food and Wine Festival. It’s an exciting endeavor that keeps me busy and inspired.
Food is like a big warm hug that says “I love you,” and it tastes even better when you share it with the people you care about.
The best movie I’ve seen this year is The Book Thief. I watched it on a plane to Dubai, and let me tell you, it was absolutely amazing. The writing is beautiful, and it will touch your heart in ways you never expected. Be warned, though, it’s not for the faint-hearted. What I loved most about it is that it kept me on the edge of my seat, guessing what would happen next. It’s a movie that surprises you at every turn, and I couldn’t get enough of it.
One thing on my Cape Town bucket list is shark-diving. Now, I have to admit, the idea scares me a little. But my husband, Brian, has been wanting to do it for ages. I guess if he’s brave enough to do it with me, I might just muster up the courage. The thought of being in that cage with him gives me some peace of mind.
Right now, I’m busy with a couple of exciting projects. I’m working on Season 2 of my show, Siba’s Table, and I’m also writing my very first cookbook. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I recently got some amazing news – Season 1 of my show has been picked up by a TV network in America! I am beyond thrilled and can’t wait to see where this adventure takes me.
One day, I have a dream to become an ambassador for the United Nations. My goal is to make a positive impact by constructing schools, libraries, hospitals, and other essential infrastructure in South Africa, the rest of Africa, and other developing nations. I also want to support financially disadvantaged but deserving students by covering their education fees. I see myself as someone who has been given blessings, and I want to share those blessings with others.
