Get ready for an unforgettable movie experience with The Galileo Open Air Cinema!
Remember the joy of watching movies under the stars at the drive-in? I still recall my first drive-in experience, with tears streaming down my face as I watched Bambi in the backseat. And my parents can’t forget their eye-opening encounter with the Rocky Horror Picture Show. If you’ve ever been to a drive-in, you’re bound to have a story of your own – like trying not to spill popcorn in awkward places during a first date while watching Grease, or cramming into the back of a truck with the whole family to enjoy ET while the speakers crackled relentlessly.
It’s a bummer that drive-in movie theaters are mostly a thing of the past, but thankfully, The Galileo Open Air Cinema has a solution. You can still enjoy movies under the stars, the only difference is that you’ll be sitting on chairs and blankets instead of in your car. You might still get popcorn in your lap, but at least the speakers won’t be making that annoying crackling sound!
I recently found out about the Galileo Open Air Cinema, and I’m super excited to share the details with you! They’re showing movies at three different venues until April next year. On Tuesdays, you can head over to Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville for a screening. If Wednesdays are more convenient for you, Kirstenbosch Gardens in Newlands is the place to be. And if Thursdays work best, you can catch a movie at the V&A Waterfront on the Foreshore.
I was lucky enough to get a schedule of movies in my mailbox, but you can also find it on the Galileo website. The great thing is that they never show the same movie twice, so there’s always something new to watch. However, it’s important to choose your venue carefully because if it rains, you can either get a refund or choose another movie at the same venue.
Now, let’s talk about the exciting movie lineup they have this summer! If you’re feeling nostalgic, you won’t want to miss classics like “Grease,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” and “The Breakfast Club.” For the romantics out there, they’ll be showing “Love Actually,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “Dirty Dancing.” And if you have little ones, they’ll have a blast watching “Ice Age,” “Shrek,” and “Harry Potter.”
So grab your friends or family and make a night of it at the Galileo Open Air Cinema. You’ll have a fantastic time under the stars, enjoying a movie in a unique and memorable way. Don’t forget to check the schedule and plan your movie nights ahead of time. See you there!
Hey there! Need to get your movie tickets? No sweat, I got you covered! You have two options: buying online or going to the gate. But here’s the deal: the gate can be a bit risky because tickets might be sold out. So why not play it safe and get them online?
Now, let me fill you in on the perks of buying online. First of all, you can choose a ticket with a backrest. I gotta tell you, those seats are seriously comfy. And if that’s not enough, you can even add a blanket to the mix. Trust me, those blankets are as soft as a cloud.
Okay, let’s say you’re more of a DIY kind of person. No worries! You can bring your own blanket to the show. Just keep in mind that personal chairs and backrests are a no-go. Gotta keep it fair for everyone, right?
Now, let’s talk grub. You have two options here too. Option one: you can bring your own snacks and drinks. Yep, you heard me. Picnic vibes all the way! But if you’re not into packing a little picnic basket, no problemo. There are vendors at the venues selling some tasty treats. Trust me, the food options at Kirstenbosch are out of this world. Just be warned, it might take you a while to decide what to have. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya!
Alright, now that we’ve got all the deets, let’s make this movie night happen. Go ahead and grab those tickets. And don’t forget to bring a little extra cash, just in case you want to treat yo’self to some mouthwatering goodies!
The first thing that caught my eye that evening were the nachos from The Mexican Nacho. They were not only incredibly popular but also wheat-free, which is great for those with dietary restrictions. Another dish that stood out was the seafood paella, which came in both hot and cold versions. Personally, I couldn’t resist trying the traditional Pamplona from a fantastic Argentinian food stall, and it did not disappoint. Meanwhile, my friends opted for classic favorites like burgers, boerie rolls, and wraps.
What I really appreciate about this food market is the variety of options available. There’s something for everyone, with prices ranging from R35 for a boerie roll, R45 for a generous portion of nachos, to R65 for the delicious Pamplona. And don’t worry, you won’t go thirsty either. The different vendors offer a wide range of drinks, such as soft beverages, hot chocolate, and coffee to satisfy all tastes.
When the gates open at 18h00 and the movie starts after sunset, somewhere between 19h30 and 20h15, it’s an exciting spectacle you don’t want to miss. You have plenty of time to gather a backrest and cozy blankets, find a perfect spot, and grab some tasty food before the film begins. And let me tell you, if you come dressed in theme like burlesque for Moulin Rouge or Darth Vader for Star Wars, there’s a chance you might win free tickets to another screening. I can’t wait to see all the guys sporting military uniforms for Top Gun…

Hint:
Don’t forget that it’s Christmas time too! Movie tickets would make an excellent gift. And they’re also a fantastic idea for a romantic Valentine’s Day date…
