Hey there! Let me tell you about the Shark Warrior guides. They have some really cool information to share. Did you know that peace-loving spotted gully sharks like to hang out on the seabed? It’s pretty fascinating!

So, here’s what happened to me. I woke up one Friday morning feeling the urge to reconnect with nature. Little did I know that I would end up swimming alongside six or seven spotty, blunt-nosed sharks, each about 1.7 meters long. It wasn’t exactly what I had in mind, but hey, life is full of surprises!

As I slipped the snorkel into my mouth, my breath felt loud and fast. I couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous. But then I remembered what Terry Corr said about gully sharks being peaceful. He mentioned that he rarely felt threatened by them, except for that one time when he got caught in the middle of a feeding frenzy involving 30 sharks. Yikes!

My name is Terry, and together with Jon Monsoon, I help run the Shark Warrior Adventure Centre at Seaforth Beach. This amazing place was founded by Lesley Rochat, a passionate ocean conservationist, three years ago. We’re lucky to share the beach with around 150 pairs of African penguins.

Today, my husband Deon and I had the pleasure of joining a paddling excursion organized by Shark Warrior. Our kayaks glistened in the sunlight as we glided effortlessly on the calm, glass-like surface of the sea. The weather was perfect, with no strong winds to disturb us. It felt like a magical morning.

As we approached Ark Rock, a majestic granite boulder situated 300 meters away from the shore, I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty around us. Seals lounged on the rocks, shifting positions every now and then. The sound of their snorts filled the air, accompanied by the distant hum of traffic. It was a moment of tranquility and connection with nature.

I couldn’t resist observing the seals up close, but I tried not to breathe too deeply as the wind carried the strong smell of guano from the rock. Despite the occasional pungent odor, the serenity of the surroundings was overwhelming.

Being so close to the wildlife was a humbling experience. We could hear the playful sounds of a baby seal nearby, reminding us of the preciousness of life in its simplest form. The mesmerizing scene felt like a dream.

At Shark Warrior Adventure Centre, we believe in showcasing the wonders of the ocean while promoting its conservation. Lesley Rochat’s vision continues to inspire us as we strive to bring people closer to nature’s beauty and raise awareness about the importance of protecting our marine ecosystems.

Did you know that the peaceful spotted gully sharks love chilling out at the bottom of the ocean? It’s their favorite spot to be! These cool sharks can be found on the seabed, peacefully gliding through the water.

I couldn’t resist the allure of the ocean as we followed the coastline south. Terry, our guide, pointed out a shoal of yellowtail in the ruffled water. He also shared the fascinating history of the penguins with us as we glided past Boulders Beach.

These birds arrived in 1982 and quickly multiplied. At their peak, there were at least 30,000 penguins on the coast around Simon’s Town. However, their population is declining due to human encroachment, overfishing, and increasing numbers of seals. It’s strange that predators like great whites are mysteriously disappearing from the area. To make matters worse, there’s bird flu brought in by swift terns and spread by humans walking along the beach.

During our rest stop at Windmill Beach, Terry shared some sobering information. He told us, “Penguins will abandon their eggs if there aren’t enough fish to sustain their rapidly growing young. If we don’t protect them, penguins could become extinct within 12 years.”

I couldn’t resist the temptation any longer, so I decided to take a dip in the water. Back at the center, we put on our wetsuits made of neoprene and went snorkeling to Water’s Edge. Surprisingly, the golden kelp forest was very close to the shore. As we entered this mesmerizing world, we could see gully sharks gracefully swimming over a bed of sea urchins on the ocean floor. Harders, hottentots, yellow-bellied rock cod, and red romans are also inhabitants of this forest. If you’re lucky, you might even spot an octopus or a stingray. Unfortunately, we weren’t that lucky, but we did encounter a few curious penguins swimming towards us in the shallows at Boulders. It was truly a charming experience. Terry informed us that these penguins rarely approach humans on their own.

On our way back to Seaforth, I noticed a pyjama shark in the shallows. Just a few meters away, two people stood in the water, completely unaware of the incredible underwater world right at their fingertips.

When you come face to face with wild creatures in their natural habitat, it’s always an exhilarating experience. And if that includes encountering sharks, even the most laid-back ones, the thrill factor goes up a notch. It’s a unique opportunity to feel the adrenaline rush and get a taste of the wild side.
