Have you ever heard of the Garden Route? It’s a place that’s said to make life better. But does it really live up to the hype? Well, let me tell you, the nature here is simply unbeatable. With stunning mountains, lush forests, meandering rivers, and beautiful beaches, it’s a paradise for nature lovers. And there’s something special about the slower pace of life here. You’ll find quirky touches like that house in Sedgefield with dogs carved into its fence. It’s truly a place to fall in love with. But one of the best things about the Garden Route is the incredible adventures you can have right on your doorstep. Let me share with you three amazing two-day adventures you can experience.
Experience the wonders of nature with an overnight stay in the Fountain Shack at the Robberg Nature Reserve
Imagine this: you arrive at a beautiful reserve and immediately start your own little ritual. You explore the area, find the perfect spot for a barbecue, set up your chairs, and crack open a cold drink. Ah, pure bliss.
But what if I told you that you could have an entire reserve all to yourself? That’s exactly what happens when you stay at the Fountain Shack. Once the reserve closes and everyone leaves, you and your friends can pretend that Robberg is your own private kingdom.
Now, let me tell you a bit about Robberg Peninsula. It’s a narrow strip of land that stretches for four kilometers, with the Indian Ocean surrounding it on all sides. The best way to experience this stunning location is by taking a circular walk around the peninsula. From there, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the ocean. Keep an eye out for humpback, southern right, and Bryde’s whales, as well as dolphins and the occasional great white shark. And if that’s not enough, there’s even a seal colony on the northern side of the peninsula.
Hey there! Ready for an adventure? I’ve got just the thing for you. Imagine hiking along a rugged coastal path for an hour, taking in the breathtaking sights as you go. The best part? Your destination is a cozy hut, tucked away in nature’s embrace. It’s an absolute logistical breeze – just pack your essentials like food, clothing, and sleeping bags.
This hut, known as the Fountain Shack, has everything you need. With room for eight lucky adventurers, it may be simple, but it’s got some decent amenities and a fully equipped kitchen. Picture yourself gazing out over Die Eiland, a magnificent rocky outcrop connected to the peninsula by a unique strip of sand and boardwalks.

2. Hike the Harkerville Trail
Hey there! I want to tell you about this amazing two-day hike that covers 24 kilometers. It’s a real gem, showcasing beautiful forested areas and stunning coastal scenery. The hike takes you through all kinds of environments, from dense forests to coastal fynbos, and you get to enjoy breathtaking views along the coastal cliffs. I’m telling you, it’s truly a treat for nature lovers!
The hike is located between Knysna and Plett, and its landscape is reminiscent of the famous Otter Trail. But here’s an interesting twist: it actually starts at the end of another popular multi-day hike called the Outeniqua Trail. So, if you’ve already completed the Outeniqua Trail, you can easily extend your adventure by adding the Harkerville Trail to your itinerary.
Now let’s get into the nitty-gritty of the Harkerville Trail. It all begins at the Harkerville Hut, where you’ll embark on a journey that will take you across wooden bridges, up ladders, chains, steep cliffs, and narrow wooden stairs. It’s a hike that’s definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you’re up for a thrilling adventure, this trail is perfect for you. Trust me, it’s one of the more daring trails you’ll find in the whole country!
When you spend the night at Sinclair Hut, you’ll be staying in a long building that has two cabins. Each cabin has two triple bunks with mattresses, so there’s plenty of room for everyone. The hut also has separate bathrooms for men and women, which include flushing toilets and hand basins. However, keep in mind that there’s no electricity, hot water, or showers available.
One of the highlights of the hut is the big covered fireplace, where you can gather around and stay warm. And if you prefer to be outside, there’s also a fire-pit on the large lawn in front of the hut.
If you’re interested in booking a stay at the Sinclair Hut, the cost is R390 per person. It’s best to make your reservations through the Forestry Regional Office in Knysna. You can reach them at (044) 302 5600.
Experience the Whiskey Creek Cabin by Paddle
Are you ready for an adventure? I’ve got just the thing for you – the Whiskey Creek canoe trail! It’s a seven-kilometre paddle up the Keurbooms River that will take you on a journey through nature’s hidden gems.
As soon as you hop in your canoe and start paddling, you’ll leave the outside world behind. The lush greenery of the indigenous forests will surround you, making you feel like you’ve entered another world. The trees are covered in delicate old man’s beard, adding to the magical atmosphere. Keep your eyes peeled, because you might catch a glimpse of fish eagles, kingfishers, or even the elusive Knysna turacos!
The trail will take you about four hours to complete, and it’s worth every minute. And when you reach the end, you’ll find a cozy self-catering cabin waiting for you. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind after your adventure. Plus, it can accommodate up to ten people, so you can bring your friends or family along.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your paddle and get ready to explore the Whiskey Creek canoe trail. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!
When I reach the point where the river turns into gentle rapids after seven kilometers, it’s time to take a break. I pull my canoe out of the water and onto the riverbank. I notice a timber walkway leading to an elevated bend in the river where the cabin is located. I’m excited to explore what awaits me.
The cabin is truly a gem. It has an open-air kitchen, shaded by a veranda roof, and a spacious deck with a braai area. I can already picture myself enjoying meals and soaking in the beautiful surroundings from there.
