Two unconventional picnics in Joburg MzansiBride

Hey there! Did you know that Gauteng has some amazing weather for picnicking? The skies are clear and the afternoons are sunny, making it the perfect time to head outdoors and enjoy nature. Today, I want to share with you two unique ways to have a picnic that you might not have thought of before.

Picnicking in the veld

Two unconventional picnics in Joburg MzansiBride

I live on a farm in De Tweedespruit with my husband, Robert Scott Denton. We love to cook and share delicious meals with others. That’s why we started hosting ‘veld picnics’ on our property. We serve three-course meals straight from our veld kitchen.

One of our popular dishes is slow-roasted lamb shanks with dukkah, potato bake, and a salad of brown chickpeas and avo. It’s a tasty combination that our guests can’t get enough of. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

Before hosting veld picnics, I had restaurants called Li-bel in Sunnyside and Albizia in Cullinan. Although Albizia closed in 2013, I’m grateful that people still seek me out for my cooking. They know that they can find me by looking for my white chair that marks the entrance to our property.

If you’re looking for a unique dining experience, you should join us for a veld picnic. Not only will you enjoy a fantastic meal, but you’ll also get to experience the beauty of our farm and the peacefulness of nature. It’s a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

A bunch of people who don’t know each other yet sit tight, gather up their skirts, and hop into Robert’s truck. We all hang on to our Panama hats and fancy sunglasses as we jostle over the bumpy ground towards Lientjie, who’s waiting for us under the wild syringa trees. There’s a table all set up with roses, white tablecloths, and a big pitcher of bay-leaf lemonade. From her little kitchen nearby, Lientjie brings out warm filo tarts stuffed with smoked, grilled, and marinated mushrooms, sprinkled with thyme “ash.” She also has giant lamb shanks that were slow-cooked with wonderbessie (resurrection bush) and slices of orange, cashew, and rosemary cake. The most special part comes at the end when Lientjie and Robert join us, and they reveal that Albizia is coming to the farm in 2017.

Here’s how you can book: You can enjoy our picnic menu, which costs R550 per person. The menu changes regularly, so you’ll always have something new to try. If you’re planning for a larger group, we can pack your picnic as a delicious lunch. Feel free to bring your own drinks and cool box for a refreshing experience. Our location is at Portion 18, De Tweedespruit. To book your picnic and get directions, simply call 0825316141.

Now, let me share a secret tip with you: On Sundays, my personal favorite spot is Wa-wiel at Sandwani Lodge, just six kilometers away from here. You’ll have to take a dirt road to get there, but trust me, it’s worth it. For under R500, you can have a wonderful meal. Imagine three juicy T-bone steaks, three servings of pap and sheba (a tasty tomato gravy), a salad, and of course, a bottle of white and red wine. Top it off with four brandy and Coke drinks and a delicious Don Pedro. And don’t worry, the tip is already included in the price! To find this fantastic place, head over to the M8, just 15 kilometers outside Cullinan. For more information, give them a call at 0832571516 or visit their website at sandwani.co.za.

Let’s Explore the New Town with a Picnic!

At New Town, you’ll find a unique experience that combines relaxation, fun, and good food in the heart of the city. Picture this: a sunny lane transformed into a cozy “lawn,” where kids frolic on blankets and parents unwind on deck-chairs. Swings made of wood and rope provide entertainment for older siblings. This is a place where both style and comfort meet.

The Green Lane, brought to you by the creative minds behind Work Shop New Town, is a revitalizing initiative led by Trevyn and Julian McGowan. These visionaries, known for their success with Watershed at the V&A Waterfront, have set their sights on rejuvenating the CBD, and they are doing it in the most delightful way – Joburg-style picnicking!

Imagine strolling through a pedestrianized section of the city, breathing in the vibrant atmosphere. The “grass” beneath your feet is AstroTurf, giving you a taste of nature right in the middle of the urban landscape. Hungry? No worries! You can order delicious food from The Potato Shed and Town, satisfying your cravings without ever leaving this unique setting.

And let’s not forget about the drinks – the cherry on top of this revitalizing experience. If you’re in the mood for a refreshing craft beer, you’re in luck. The Green Lane has an assortment of craft beers on tap, just waiting for you to take a sip and savor the flavors.

So come on down to New Town for a one-of-a-kind experience. Whether you’re a parent looking for a relaxing afternoon with your family or a young adult searching for a stylish outing, The Green Lane has something for everyone. It’s not just a picnic, it’s an urban oasis!

First up, we have the ‘Pigeon Friendly’ Dim Sum Basket. This one is perfect for two people and it’s from a place called Town. Inside the basket, you’ll find some delicious spinach-and-cream-cheese and roast-butternut dim sum. Yum! There are 12 pieces in total and it costs R165. I think you’re gonna love it!

Next, we have a basket called the Veuve Picnic Basket. This one is meant for four people and it’s from The Potato Shed. Inside, you’ll find a whole bunch of tasty treats like a garden-box salad, a cheese plate, lamb on the spit, and twice-baked potato slices. And to top it all off, there’s even a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne. Fancy!

Now, let me tell you how you can get your hands on these baskets. They’re available on Saturdays from noon until 5pm. If you need blankets or deckchairs, you can hire them for R50 each and R20 each, respectively. Or if you prefer, you can bring your own. The baskets can be found at the corner of Miriam Makeba and Gwigwi Mrwebi streets in Newtown, Joburg. And if you have any questions, you can give them a call at 0820951684.

Oh, and don’t forget about the drinks! Make sure to grab a refreshing beverage to enjoy with your basket. Cheers!

Hey there! I wanted to tell you about this cool spot in Joburg called Work Shop New Town. I checked it out recently, and it’s a really unique place. They have this small but awesome bar called Town with these fancy Gregor Jenkin tables. And the best part? They serve these delicious dim sum baskets made by a local resident named Sbu Msongelwa. You know, Sbu also has a stall at the Braamfontein Neighbourgoods Market, so you know his food must be good!

When I was there, I took some time to check out the fashion they have on display. It’s really interesting to see the different styles they have. Oh, and you have to try their saketini cocktail. It’s a little pricey at R90, but totally worth it!

Located at the corner of Miriam Makeba and Gwigwi Mrwebi streets in Newtown, Joburg, you’ll definitely want to check this place out. If you have any questions or want to make a reservation, you can give them a call at 0712959241 or visit their website at workshopnewtown.com.
