Discover Two Hidden Gems for Picnics and Hiking in Joburg
Do you ever find yourself yearning for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life? I certainly do! Luckily, Johannesburg offers not one, but two incredible day trips that will transport you to a world of natural beauty and tranquility. So grab your picnic basket, put on your walking shoes, and get ready to explore!
1. Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden
Nestled within the rolling hills of Roodepoort, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden is a true hidden gem. As I make my way through the winding pathways, I’m surrounded by an awe-inspiring variety of plants and flowers, each more vibrant than the last. The melodious songs of birds fill the air, creating a symphony of nature’s harmonies. I find a cozy spot by the tranquil Witpoortjie Waterfall, unfold my picnic blanket, and take a moment to marvel at the breathtaking sight.
For the adventurous types, there are hiking trails that wind through the rugged terrain. As I hike, I can feel the stress melt away with each step, replaced by a newfound sense of serenity. The fresh scent of wildflowers and the gentle rustling of leaves provide a soothing backdrop to my journey. Along the way, I stumble upon hidden caves and awe-inspiring rock formations, reminding me of the ancient wonders that nature has created over millions of years.
2. Golden Harvest Park
A short drive from the city center lies Golden Harvest Park, a tranquil oasis that seems worlds away from the urban jungle. As I enter the park, I’m greeted by a vast expanse of green fields, dotted with towering trees and colorful wildflowers. The calm waters of the dam reflect the vibrant blue sky above, creating a picture-perfect scene.
There are picnic spots galore, each offering a unique view of the park’s natural beauty. Whether you prefer a shaded spot under a tree or a sun-soaked area by the water’s edge, you’re sure to find the perfect place to enjoy your picnic feast. As I savor each bite of my sandwich, I can’t help but feel grateful for this moment of tranquility amidst the chaos of everyday life.
If you’re up for some adventure, Golden Harvest Park also boasts several hiking trails that cater to all skill levels. As I navigate the winding paths, I can’t help but be amazed by the diversity of wildlife that calls this park home. From graceful gazelles to mischievous monkeys, each encounter brings a sense of wonder and excitement.
So, the next time you find yourself yearning for an escape from the city, look no further than these two hidden gems in Joburg. Pack your picnic basket, lace up your hiking boots, and embrace the beauty that nature has to offer. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
Even though Joburg is a big city, it also has beautiful natural areas to explore. These two reserves are a quick getaway from the busy city center and are less than 30km away.
In our March issue, we highlighted 18 picnic spots around the country, perfect for enjoying the end of summer. During my research, I discovered these hidden gems in the city. Not only can you have a picnic here, but they also have well-marked trails for hiking, making it an amazing day trip.
1. Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, Joburg South
If you love hiking and enjoy running on trails, then you’ll definitely enjoy exploring the veld and koppies landscape in the southern part of Joburg. Perfect for adventurers like me! But don’t worry if you’re just looking for a peaceful picnic spot. You’ll find shaded tables at the main entrance on Peggy Vera Road, and there are plenty of rocks along the routes where you can sit and relax.
Personally, my favorite spot is near the reserve’s main gate. When you enter, turn right and head towards the first bridge that crosses the Bloubos Spruit. There, you’ll find a lovely bench next to a small stream and a little patch of grass that’s been neatly mowed. It’s the perfect place to take a break and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
When you visit this park, make sure to bring your binoculars so you can spot all the amazing wildlife. There are springbok, blesbok, black wildebeest, and over 150 different types of birds to see. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes because there are 10 different hiking trails to explore. Along the trails, you’ll also find information boards that tell you about the ancient ruins in the area. In fact, this park has the highest concentration of Iron Age sites on the Witwatersrand!
To visit the park, all you need to do is show up. Entry is completely free, and the park is open every day from sunrise to sunset. If you’re interested in hiking, you can call 0823301893 for more information.
2. Modderfontein Reserve, East Rand
Hey there! I want to tell you about this awesome place I found. It’s a 275-hectare private reserve that’s taken care of by the Endangered Wildlife Trust. And let me tell you, it’s an absolute joy to have a picnic there! The Fish Eagle Dam is a popular spot, but luckily it’s not too crowded. I mean, who wants to be crammed in like sardines, right?
Now, here’s the thing. There aren’t a ton of benches or braai sites around. So if you’re a meat lover like me, the mouthwatering smell of grilled boerewors might just drive you wild. But don’t worry, even if you’ve only packed cheese sandwiches, there’s plenty of shade under those lovely bluegum trees. You can spread out a blanket, kick back, and soak in the beautiful views of the dam. It’s so peaceful, you won’t want to leave!
Hey there! Did you know that every Saturday at 08:00, there’s a free five-kilometer Parkrun you can join? But if that’s not your cup of tea, don’t worry! There are plenty of other trails in the reserve that you can explore!
You can take a leisurely stroll along the Modderfontein Spruit and enjoy the sights and sounds of the cascading waters. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can head over to the grassland and hills for a more challenging hike. If you need a map, just bring R10 along.
Oh, and if you’re a cyclist, you’re in luck! There are four different routes for you to choose from, each with its own level of difficulty and distance. The shortest route is 10 kilometers, while the longest is around 40 kilometers.
Make sure to bring your binoculars with you! You might get a chance to spot magnificent birds like fish eagles, kingfishers, or even blue cranes. And if you’re up for it, you can plan a picnic around the bird walks that take place on the first Saturday of every month. To book your spot, just give Pat Ayling a call at 0824653683. It’s only R10 per person!
Here’s the deal: You pay R30 per person and R15 for kids. We’re open from 05:30 to 18:30pm during summer and from 06:00 to 18:00 in winter. Check out modderfonteinreserve.co.za
