Trippin’ in Hogsback

Trippin’ in Hogsback

Hey there! Let me tell you about my amazing trip to Hogsback – an enchanting little village nestled in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It’s a place that seems straight out of a fairytale with its mystical forests, cascading waterfalls, and picturesque landscapes.

When I arrived in Hogsback, I was immediately captivated by its serene beauty. It felt like stepping into a different world, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The air was crisp and refreshing, and the atmosphere was filled with a sense of tranquility and wonder.

One of the highlights of my trip was exploring the enchanting forests of Hogsback. Walking through the dense foliage, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and reverence for nature. The towering trees, covered in moss and ferns, created a magical ambiance that transported me to another realm.

But it wasn’t just the forests that amazed me – Hogsback is also home to some majestic waterfalls. The sound of rushing water echoing through the valleys was simply mesmerizing. I took the time to sit by the waterfalls, allowing myself to be completely immersed in their beauty and power.

Another must-visit spot in Hogsback is the famous “Big Tree.” This enormous yellowwood tree is said to be over 800 years old! Standing next to it, I felt incredibly small and humbled by the grandeur of nature. It reminded me how important it is to protect and preserve our natural wonders.

Aside from its natural beauty, Hogsback also has a vibrant arts and crafts scene. The village is home to many talented local artists, whose works can be found in various galleries and studios. I had the pleasure of exploring some of these spaces and was blown away by the creativity and skill on display.

And let’s not forget about the charming little cafes and restaurants in Hogsback. I indulged in some delicious homemade treats while sipping on freshly brewed coffee. The cozy atmosphere and friendly locals made me feel right at home.

Overall, my trip to Hogsback was a truly magical experience. It’s a place that has the power to rejuvenate your spirit and ignite your sense of adventure. If you’re looking for a getaway that combines natural beauty, artistic inspiration, and a touch of enchantment, then Hogsback is the perfect destination for you.

Trippin in Hogsback

When me and my buddies went on a road trip in December, we made a pit stop in Hogsback. Time was tight, so we only stayed for two nights and had just one day to really check the place out. We tried to cram in as much as we could in that short time, and boy did we have an adventure. We hiked through this magical forest, stumbled upon some wild mushrooms, and even took a bath at a spot that felt like the edge of the world. Let me tell you all about it!

Trippin in Hogsback

Imagine a village nestled in the Amathole mountains, with a rocky outcrop shaped like a hog’s back looming above it. It may seem like something out of a fairytale or a story by J.R.R. Tolkien, but that’s not quite the case.

There have been tales of Tolkien’s connection to this village, but they turned out to be more like tall tales created to attract tourists. Nevertheless, the village does exude a magical atmosphere, especially during winter when it gets covered in a blanket of snow.

When I first arrived, it had been raining non-stop for a week, even though it was December. The journey was gloomy, with Nguni cattle wandering around the streets, testing the effectiveness of our brakes. As we made our way up into the mountains, the surroundings gradually transformed into a lush forest.

My encounter with the muddy road was anything but smooth. The car struggled to find traction, spinning its wheels in a futile search for grip. It was a challenging predicament, to say the least.

A magical escape

When I visited Hogsback, I stayed at the Away with the Fairies hostel. It was already late in the evening, and an unexpected power outage had plunged everything into darkness. Surprisingly, I found myself feeling grateful for the darkness as it created a cozy atmosphere.

I decided to light a few candles and opened a bottle of wine. I also served some cheese and crackers. As I sat on the deck, shuffling a deck of cards, I couldn’t help but admire the perfect ambience. The symphony of insects provided a soothing soundtrack to the night.

The Hobbit Cottage at the hostel was truly a delight. It was named after the famous Tolkien series, and the walls were adorned with cute and quirky caricatures of hobbits. Although some may find them creepy, I couldn’t help but appreciate their charm (yes, that was sarcasm).

Tripping and stumbling

Trippin in Hogsback

When I woke up in the morning, the ground was still wet from the rain. Luckily, the Hobbit Cottage we were staying at had everything we needed for a delicious English breakfast to fuel our adventure. We were about to embark on the Amathole Hike, and the cottage marked the end of the trail. The last leg of the hike took us through a magical forest, filled with towering yellowwoods, stinkwoods, and mushrooms covering decaying wood.

It’s important to be careful on the muddy trails, as they can be slippery. But the upside is that the streams and waterfalls along the way were flowing beautifully. We found a little rockpool where the sunlight broke through the trees, creating a lovely spot to rest and enjoy our lunch.

Wow, we finally reached the majestic Madonna and Child Waterfall after a challenging hike through the kloof. As we made our way back to town, those of us without hiking sticks couldn’t help but feel a bit envious of the others. But luckily, there were plenty of hiking sticks for sale along the road, so we all had a chance to bring home a special souvenir from Hogsback.

A Treat for Every Taste

After we finished our hike, we were thrilled to get our hands on a Hogsback hiking stick souvenir and enjoy a cold brew at the local brewery.

Hogsback isn’t a bustling place, but it’s still home to a brewery and a chocolatier. When we were done with our hike, we made sure to visit the Hogsback Brewing Company for a refreshing lager to quench our thirst. Along the town’s main stretch, you’ll find a few restaurants and pubs, but we were so tired that we decided to take a nap and have dinner at the hostel. Plus, the pizza there was absolutely delicious.

I can’t help but be amazed by the main road in this village. It’s filled with stores, but there’s one special chocolatier that catches my eye. The Chocolate Shop, housed in a charming wendy-house-like structure, perfectly complements the town’s quaint aesthetic. Stepping inside, it feels like I’ve been transported to a small cobblestone street in Brussels.

The atmosphere is so authentic that I could swear I hear Flemish being spoken. But then I realize it’s just the Afrikaans farmer from Alice, stopping by to grab a little treat. The sound of his diesel bakkie is a dead giveaway.

Trippin in Hogsback

After taking a refreshing nap and still having plenty of daylight remaining, my friends and I decided to visit the local arboretum based on a recommendation that it’s a “great place to trip.” Hogsback, as it turns out, is a popular destination for those seeking unique experiences.

Now, I can neither confirm nor deny whether our group surreptitiously experimented with certain prohibited mushrooms in this paradise, but I can attest to the beauty of the waterfall and the awe-inspiring presence of the gigantic Californian redwoods. They have this special ability to communicate with you, almost as if they possess some mystical power.

After an action-packed day in the Amathole, I always look forward to ending it with a braai. It’s the perfect way to unwind and enjoy the company of new friends and strangers alike. As the fire crackles and the fireflies dance around, it feels like nature’s way of providing a peaceful escape from the chaos of load shedding.

Have you ever stood in awe of the towering, majestic redwoods in the Hogsback arboretum? I certainly have. There’s something truly remarkable about these giants of nature.

A visit to Hogsback is a beautiful reminder of the true essence of travel. It’s a time when I let my guard down and open myself up to meeting new people, welcoming them into my life, and sharing special moments together. And even long after I leave, a piece of Hogsback always stays in my heart.

On my last day, I decided to embrace the breathtaking scenery and took a refreshing bath right at the edge of the cliff. As the sun slowly rose, I felt an incredible sense of serenity and accomplishment. It was a small moment, but one that brought me so much joy and allowed me to check off another item on my bucket list.

Soon, it would be time to return to my everyday life. But Hogsback had worked its magic on me. I felt reinvigorated and renewed, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead. This special place, with its enchanting beauty and warm-hearted people, had left an indelible mark on my soul.
