Many famous individuals, including Queen Elizabeth and Nelson Mandela, have graced the doors of the historic Drostdy Hotel.

Graaff-Reinet can be compared to a time machine, transporting you back in time to a place where magnificent Victorian buildings with elegant stone verandas, pristine lime-washed facades, and breathtaking stained glass fanlights above regal wooden doors still exist. It feels like everything has been frozen in time. However, that is far from the truth. While the stone steps are undoubtedly beautiful, and the lime as vibrant as ever, Graaff-Reinet is not bound by the past. It stands as a marvel of modern Karoo life, a shining example for the struggling small towns in the region.

Driving through the Karoo towns nowadays, you’ll often find a string of fast-food joints and a 24-hour Engen garage on the main road, the N9. As I cruise down this road, the splendid Groot Kerk in Graaff-Reinet catches my eye. While many visitors only make a quick pit stop here, the heart of the town lies just a street away, hidden from the passing traffic and thunderous trucks.

This is where the real magic happens – Graaff-Reinet’s historic center. Picture picture-perfect white and green dorpshuisies, most of them offering cozy accommodations for guests. These quaint houses are the heart and soul of the town, boasting over 220 heritage sites – more than any other town in South Africa. Everywhere you turn, you’ll find examples of indigenous Karoo, Cape Dutch, and Victorian architecture. Take a moment to admire their grand polished verandas, where locals like me love to while away the hours.

Wow, can you believe it? This is the spot where the Karoo Wine Club’s Stoep Tasting has been happening since 2014. Back then, just five wine producers showed up to do tastings on a few local businesses’ stoeps.

When you gaze at the dusky colors on a quince hedge behind the Drostdy Hotel in Graaff-Reinet, you start to understand the magic of a stoep festival. But to truly appreciate it, I have to tell you about the Karoo tradition of stoep sitting. See, for us Karoo folks, it’s more than just sitting on a porch. It’s a way of life, a symbol of everything we love about the Karoo.

No, stoep sitting isn’t about fancy parties or extravagant events. It’s about taking a moment to pause, reflect, and dream. Picture this: you wake up early in the morning, make yourself a nice cup of tea, and head out to the stoep. The world is still quiet, and you have all the time in the world to gather your thoughts and plan for the day ahead.

Or imagine this: it’s the end of a long day, and you pour yourself a glass of your favorite wine. You settle down on the stoep, maybe with some company or maybe all by yourself. The sky is painted with the colors of sunset, and you let the gentle breeze wash away the stresses of the day.

That’s what stoep sitting is all about – finding joy in the simple, peaceful moments of life. While city dwellers are stuck in traffic or rushing through their day, we Karoo folk have our refuge on the front stoep. It’s where we begin and end our days, where we find solace and contentment.

For the past eight years, the Stoep Tasting has been the key ingredient in its success. Back in its first year, only 45 people showed up, but now it’s become the biggest event in Graaff-Reinet, helping local businesses thrive. This year, the organizers had to limit ticket sales to avoid overcrowding. Right now, the town is buzzing with excitement, as the family behind Montego Pet Nutrition, who are Graaff-Reinet locals, have organized an incredible vintage vehicle exhibition. You won’t believe your eyes when you see the stunning collection of classic cars and motorbikes on display. If you’re a fan of motorcycles, you won’t want to miss the 1964 BMW R27. It’s a rare gem, painted in a unique Dover White shade, and it’s up for sale – just make sure you’ve got a big wallet!

Graaff-Reinet’s Groot Kerk is an impressive sight, designed after the famous Salisbury Cathedral in England. It’s a magnificent structure that embodies the town’s rich history and architectural beauty.

When it comes to the vintage rides at the museum, Manager Urvin Frolik has a soft spot for the classics. He particularly favors the DKW 1937 F7 front Luxus Cabriolet, despite its lack of power compared to the speedy BMW bike. However, what it lacks in speed, it makes up for in style. Frolik affectionately strokes the car’s vibrant blue hubcap, appreciating its timeless charm.

Restoration lies at the heart of the Graaff-Reinet community, a commitment to reviving and cherishing forgotten treasures. This sentiment is exemplified by the old Drostdy Hotel, a splendid example of Cape Dutch architecture. Since its establishment in 1804, the hotel has served as a sanctuary for travelers seeking respite. My father often shares stories of his great-grandfather, who used to stay here with his trusty horse after a long journey from Cradock in the 1800s.

Nowadays, this hotel has been transformed into a luxurious five-star retreat, but it still welcomes travelers and their tired furry friends. Unfortunately, only dogs are allowed, so no horses, even though it would have been quite an experience! Instead of stables, you’ll find beautifully decorated rooms adorned with vibrant colors on the windows and doors. The traditional Karoo scene is complete with a quince hedge and a green and white facade. What’s more, the hotel is conveniently located in Graaff-Reinet’s heritage hub, making it the ideal home base for exploring the town while enjoying the delightful Stoep Tasting experience.

When I stay at the Drostdy, what I love the most isn’t the fancy decor or the nods to the local nature and history. It’s the hotel’s dedication to empowering the people of the area. You see, most of the staff here graduated from Graaff-Reinet’s Volkskool or Jansenville High School, both nearby. After that, they received training at the SA College for Tourism, just outside Graaff-Reinet. The Drostdy becomes their first real-world training experience, and from here, they can go on to incredible opportunities in the hospitality industry all over the world. Take Emile van Rooyen, for example. He’s currently finishing his training at the Drostdy and has already been offered a job on a cruise ship. And he’s not the first staff member to be given such an opportunity – many others from the Drostdy have gone on to achieve great things in global hospitality.

When you visit Graaff-Reinet, you’ll find a town that is determined to revive and celebrate the essence of Karoo living. It’s an ongoing process, with the Stoep Tasting Festival being just one example. This charming town is forging a path that merges its colonial history with its deep Karoo roots, resulting in a unique and vibrant community.

One of the highlights of Graaff-Reinet is the Stoep Tasting, where you can indulge in the finest wines the country has to offer. As you meander through the streets, you’ll encounter the leiwater channels, a testament to the town’s heritage. Hike the Valley of Desolation
Take an easy 2km hike on the Cape Crag Lizard Trail and explore the breathtaking Valley of Desolation lookout points. Located 5km outside of Graaff-Reinet on the R63 to Murraysburg, the gate is open every day from 6.30am to 7pm. South Africans can gain entry for just R48.

Check out this cool spot in Graaff-Reinet! It’s called Recollection Rides, and it’s a must-visit if you’re a fan of bicycles. They have some awesome rides on display, and you can even buy one if you’re interested. And guess what? There’s more! Right across the street, you’ll find Recollection Village, where you can dive deep into the fascinating history and evolution of bicycles. It’s like a whole room dedicated to pedal power! You’ll need to pay a small fee of R30 to enter, but it’s totally worth it.

If you’re in the mood for some outdoor adventure, I’ve got just the thing for you. Take a run or a bike ride on Ouberg Road. It’s a fantastic way to soak in the beauty of Graaff-Reinet from a bird’s-eye view. Just follow the road towards the Valley of Desolation. Once you cross the Sundays River, you’ll see a gravel road on your left. That’s where the fun begins! The best part? There’s no entrance fee, so it’s completely free!
