South Africa is a diverse country with a mix of cultures. We have many different groups of people, each with their own unique traditions, customs, beliefs, and history.
The Basotho group is one of the Sotho peoples in South Africa. This group includes the Batswana (western Sotho), Bapedi (northern Sotho), and Basotho (southern Sotho). They are part of the larger Bantu peoples, which also includes the Sotho, Nguni, Tsonga, and Venda groups.
The Basotho Cultural Village, located in the Free State, is a special place that has preserved the history of the Basotho people from the 16th century until today. It is situated about 30 kilometers from the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Let me give you a glimpse into what you can expect on a tour of the Village:
When you visit the Basotho Cultural Village, the first thing you’ll notice is the magnificent view from the outside.
1. The Melodious Call of Strangers
Before entering the village, you’ll need to obtain permission from the Chief. As you make your way towards the Chief’s ‘khotla’ or court, you’ll hear a beautiful melody floating through the air. The source of this enchanting music is a ‘sehloela’ – a lookout stationed high on a rock. These musical notes serve as a signal to the Chief, alerting him to the presence of strangers approaching his court.
2. A Warm Welcome with Basotho Beer
As I approach the chief’s court, I am greeted with the warm embrace of Basotho tradition – a ceremonial offering of beer. The gate stands tall before me, and I announce my presence and purpose through the tour guide who acts as my voice. With this formal introduction, the chief grants me access to his village, and I step inside, grateful for the opportunity.
Once inside, I am met with a gracious welcome from the chief himself. He presents me with a cup of Basotho beer, a symbol of his hospitality. Taking a respectful sip, I join the chorus of gratitude expressed by the other guests. The chief, satisfied with our observance of this tradition, opens the doors to his village, inviting us to explore.
3. Exploring the ‘Ngaka’ – Chief’s Traditional Healer
As I continue on the guided tour, I come across a fascinating individual known as the ‘ngaka’. This traditional healer possesses an intriguing ability to peer into the future by using bones.
The next destination on the tour brings us to the private dwelling of the chief. It is here that we encounter the ngaka, who holds the power to provide consultations through the ancient practice of bone throwing. This mystical experience offers us a glimpse into our own futures.
4. Explore the Intimate Quarters of the Chief
I’ve got some exciting news for you! When you visit the village, there’s a special treat waiting for you – the opportunity to explore the chief’s fascinating lifestyle and traditions up close.
First off, you’ll have a chance to step inside the chief’s bedroom. Yes, that’s right! The chief, who happens to have multiple wives, reserves this unique space for himself. As you enter, your eyes will be drawn to an array of animal skins adorning the room. Each one holds significance and is chosen carefully for different occasions. Keep your gaze wandering, and you’ll spot an assortment of weapons and hats, each with its own purpose and history. As our knowledgeable tour guide leads the way, they’ll happily enlighten you about the significance of every item and when it’s used. Prepare to be amazed!
5. Delight in the exotic tastes of ‘dipabi’ and ‘motoho’ at the homes of the first and second wives
Welcome to the first wife’s home, the heart of the Basotho people.
Each of our chief’s wives has her own home, where you can experience the essence of Basotho hospitality. At the first and second wives’ homes, you’ll have the opportunity to indulge in some traditional delicacies. ‘Dipabi’ is a delicious mixture of crushed corn, salt, and sugar. And if you’re feeling extra hungry, we also offer ‘motoho’ – a hearty fermented sorghum porridge that makes for a fulfilling breakfast.
As we continue our tour, you’ll get a glimpse into the modern way of life for the Basotho people.
