Peter Finlayson, a winemaker from the area, and Paul Bouchard, a winemaker from Burgundy, decided to team up and create something truly special: the Bouchard Finlayson Winery estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. In 1972, the Old Harbour was transformed into a museum. They hired a curator in 1973 to oversee the renovations. The area was in bad shape, but they cleaned it up and fixed everything. They even restored old fishing boats to display outside. Inside the museum, they built it on the steps where the old fishing shacks used to be. Some of the shacks were rebuilt on the slopes. It’s a great place to learn about how they used to fish back in the day. You can see where they dried the fish and check out glass negatives taken by a famous photographer named TD Ravenscroft. They also have trophies from local fisherman Bill Sherkirk, who caught the world’s biggest man-eating shark with a fishing rod in 1922. They even have the jaws of the shark on display, which is pretty cool.
