One of the coolest things about Umhlanga is that, as long as you book a place in the right area, you won’t need a car. How great is that? I focused on accommodations that were just a short walk away from all the cool shops, restaurants, and lifeguard stations. You gotta be safe, you know?

Now, let’s talk about B&Bs versus apartments. Sure, there are plenty of great B&Bs around, but I found that apartments were way nicer and offered better value for your money. And trust me, I saw a lot of apartments. I filtered out the ones that were on the beach, well-maintained, and had reasonable minimum-stay periods. Gotta have some standards, right?

Oh, and here’s something important to keep in mind. Most apartment owners have different rates for different seasons: low, high, and mid. If you’re planning to visit in December, you better book your place NOW. Don’t wait around, trust me.

But what if you prefer staying in a hotel? No worries, I got you covered. Hotels use something called the “best available rate.” Basically, it means that the price can change based on how many people are booking and how many rooms are available. One thing that made this hotel stand out for me was its location. The hotel, which was built in 1982 right on Umhlanga’s beachfront, is right next to a nature reserve. It’s nice to see that it’s on the edge of the bustling city but still connected to the natural beauty of the jungle. The hotel offers a beautiful view of the remaining jungle, with loungers set up so you can relax and take it in. In addition, the hotel has all the amenities you’d expect from a classic resort, including three swimming pools (one for swimming laps), all set within lovely gardens. However, I must say that the loud music played may not be to everyone’s liking. Accommodation options include hotel rooms, but I found that booking an owner apartment through one of the agents was not only cheaper but also better decorated. You can choose from different bedroom configurations, although some are more attractively furnished than others. The only downside is that the hotel is a bit far from the shopping center and nightlife, so it may not be the best choice for teenagers who want to be close to the action. If you have little kids who love the facilities and daily entertainment, then this is a great choice. If you want to avoid dealing with a grumpy teenager, you may want to consider Cabana Beach or Umhlanga Sands, the two Tsogo Sun resorts, instead.
Room tip: I found that Chas Everitt had the best selection of Breakers apartments (515, 228, and 212). Umhlanga Accommodation had cheaper options that were not as nicely decorated but were functional (my top pick was 418). Most of these apartments can accommodate four people, but there are also options for two people.

I’ve actually managed to secure most of the flats in Glitter Bay, which is a beautiful apartment block on Umhlanga’s Bronze Beach. Out of the 18 flats in the building, I have 11 of them on my books. The best thing about these flats is that they all have stunning views of the ocean and direct access to the beach. There’s even a small communal swimming pool and braai area at the back of the building. What sets some of the flats apart is that a few of them have large lawned areas, which is perfect for families with kids who want to run around and play. It’s such a luxury to have your own patch of grass right by the beach.

Tip for choosing a room: Flat number 3 has a really modern open-plan living space that opens up onto the lawn. It’s a fantastic place to relax. However, I should mention that none of the three bedrooms in this flat have a view of the ocean, and the main en-suite bathroom is completely open-plan. If you really want a sea view from your bedroom, I recommend booking flat number 8, which also has its own lawn.
