Why Kruger is the Perfect Safari Destination: An Affordable Adventure
When it comes to going on safari, cost can be a major concern. With chartered flights and luxurious accommodations eating up your budget, it seems impossible to have any funds left for those classic gin and tonics that go hand in hand with the safari experience. We’ve all heard the old saying that the quinine in the tonic actually repels mosquitoes, so it’s an essential part of the experience. But fear not, my fellow adventure-seekers! Kruger National Park is here to save the day, offering an accessible and affordable safari destination that will leave you in awe without breaking the bank.
So, I’ve been lucky enough to visit the private reserves in Kruger several times, trying out different ways to get there. And today, I want to talk about why I think Kruger is the best safari destination, both in terms of accessibility and affordability.
For this post, I’ll be using three reserves as examples: the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve (which I’ll give you the top 10 reasons to visit), the Timbavati Game Reserve, and the southern part of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Now, the Timbavati and the southern Sabi are pretty popular among first-time Kruger visitors. But the Klaserie, it’s a hidden gem, you know? It’s not as well-known, but it’s teeming with small game and fierce predators.
So, without further ado, here are my top 4 reasons why Kruger is so accessible and affordable:
1. Driving to Kruger is a breeze
When it comes to the Kruger reserves, they have well-developed gravel roads that are clearly marked. Every now and then, there might be roadblocks due to natural elements damaging the roads. However, the lodges usually either create new roads or close off the ones that are inaccessible. So, you don’t really need to rent a 4×4 vehicle to navigate the reserves and get to your safari lodge. In fact, we just rented a small and affordable car, and it was more than enough. We managed the whole self-drive trip between Sabi and the Klaserie in a Toyota Corolla, which I jokingly treated like a monster truck. It was quite an adventure!
When you arrive at O.R. Tambo, you’ll see a variety of car rental companies to choose from. Getting to the Kruger is quite simple, but it’s a good idea to rent a GPS with your car. When my friends and I drove to Sabi, we used the Lion Sands GPS coordinates, and they were spot on. The only frustrating part of the journey was passing through White River, where the road lines seemed more like suggestions than actual rules! Along the way, you’ll also encounter two toll gates where you’ll need to pay a fee. All in all, it took us about seven hours to reach Sabi.
Getting to Shaws Gate is really simple. That’s where you’ll find the entrance to a bunch of lodges. When you arrive at Shaws Gate, keep an eye out for these cool wooden signs that show the names of the lodges and how far away they are. But here’s the thing: there are a lot of signs for the Paul Kruger gate, and the signs for Shaws Gate aren’t super clear.
How can you be sure that you’ve arrived at Shaws Gate? Well, it’s pretty easy. Just keep an eye out for a large wooden signboard. On that signboard, you’ll see the names of several lodges, including Mala Mala, Singita, and Lion Sands. Once you spot it, turn onto that road and follow the gravel path until you reach the entrance gate.
Now, here’s something important to keep in mind. When you enter a private reserve like this one, you’ll need to pay a gate and conservation fee. The price of the fee can vary depending on the reserve, so be sure to have some cash on hand.
Let me give you a little piece of advice. I don’t recommend entering at Newington Gate. It’s a bit of a tricky route, and honestly, it’s not as enjoyable as going through Shaws Gate. At Shaws Gate, you have plenty of time to make your way in before they close up shop at 11 PM. Not that I think you’ll get lost or anything – I trust your sense of direction.
Getting to the Timbavati and Klaserie is a breeze. Just drive past Hoedspruit airport and enter through the Timbavati Gate. You can also enter through Orpen and Incheni Gate, but Timbavati is the simplest option. Follow the GPS coordinates of your chosen lodge, or if you’re staying at Africa on Foot or nThambo Tree Camp, they’re accurate. The Timbavati Gate is right by the Hoedspruit airport, and don’t forget to bring some cash to pay the conservation fee!
Make sure to inform your lodge about your expected arrival time. If you’re running late, they’ll get in touch with your booking agent or send a ranger to find you. Keep the lodge’s contact number handy.
Have you ever noticed those wooden signs at Shaws Gate in the Sabi Sand Reserve? They are quite intriguing, aren’t they?
Wow, I have to tell you about this incredible experience I had recently. I was driving through the Sabi and after just 10 minutes, guess what I saw? Signage for our camp! Can you believe it? It was like a special surprise, guiding me to my destination.
Wow, the gravel roads in the Sabi Sands are really something! I have to say, they’re not bad at all!
Driving on the Klaserie road is a breeze.
2. Get a ride from O.R. Tambo airport to the Kruger
You have several options for getting from the airport to the Kruger region. There are reliable shuttles that can pick you up and take you directly to your lodge, or they can drop you off at a central meeting point where someone from the lodge will be waiting to take you the rest of the way. There are also shuttle companies that can transfer you between lodges. These services run every day at scheduled times. Taking a transfer is the perfect choice for those who don’t want to or can’t drive on South African roads. The best part? You can sit back and enjoy the view while someone else takes care of the driving!
Why not try combining a self-drive with a transfer? You could start off with a transfer vehicle for the long drive from O.R. Tambo and then pick up a car from a nearby town close to your chosen reserve in the Kruger. This way, you can enjoy the best of both worlds!
3. Direct flights from international airports to major Kruger Airports
If you prefer flying, there are direct flights available from international airports to major Kruger Airports. SA Airlink offers flights from O.R. Tambo to Hoedspruit Airport, and there are also direct flights from Cape Town to Hoedspruit on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Hoedspruit Airport is conveniently located near the Timbavati and Klaserie reserves, only about 5 to 10 minutes away from the Timbavati gate. If you arrange it in advance, your lodge will be happy to pick you up from the airport. Alternatively, you can fly to Phalaborwa airport, which is about an hour away from the Klaserie and Timbavati, with connecting flights available from O.R. Tambo.
I’m excited to share some great news with you! The Skukuza Airport is set to open its doors to commercial flights on November 1st this year. This new development will make it even easier for you to explore the incredible camps in the area.
