Discover Stone Tin Lodge, just a stone’s throw from Dullstroom

Amazing Value: Prices start at just R2500 per night for six people.
Travel Time: Located only 3 hours and 30 minutes from Joburg city center.

Top 32 weekend getaways near Johannesburg MzansiBride

Sunlight floods Stone Tin Lodge with warmth throughout the day. When night falls, a grand central fireplace fills the open-plan lounge, dining, and kitchen area with cozy heat. The lodge is beautifully adorned with pale wood finishes, navy fabrics, and Nguni-skin rugs. It sits on a private farm, about 30 kilometers on the Lydenburg side of Dullstroom. Surrounded by rolling hills, the lodge overlooks two dams teeming with trout. Living off the grid, it relies mainly on solar energy and gas, with a generator as a backup.

Every room in this retreat made of corrugated iron and stone is equipped with snug blankets and an en-suite bathroom. The main bedroom is further embellished with an exquisite ball-and-claw bathtub. Here, you can enjoy various activities. Throw your fishing line into the water, spot blesbok, black wildebeest, and zebra on an easy hike, or, if the weather is chillingly cold, curl up on the couch, watch a movie on the DStv, and take solace in each other’s company.

However, be aware that the road leading to the lodge is not suitable for low-slung sedans. I managed to drive there in a VW Polo, but I found myself grumbling most of the way due to the protruding rocks on the road. Before your arrival, make sure to stock up on supplies from Dullstroom. It’s always a delight to bring back local trout from Millies. Also, don’t forget to pack filter coffee for the Bodum French press, bubble bath for a luxurious soak, and firewood. If you run out of firewood, the friendly farm managers are more than happy to sell you a bag for R50.

Cost: If you and your group have 10 guests, you can stay at the lodge for R350 per person. For a group of six people, the price is R2500 per night, with an additional R250 per person.
Contact: You can reach them at 060 664 0941 or 011 819 6012/3, or email them at [email protected] . You can also visit their website at www.stonetinlodge.co.za.

This place is the closest you’ll ever get to experiencing the charm of the old country. Inside, there’s a cool, cobbled street cafe that leads to seven unique chateau-style suites.
