• Grahamstown, despite its small size, offers an impressive array of self-catering cottages and apartments. This town is particularly popular among parents who come to visit their children at the local boarding schools or Rhodes University.
• The guest houses in Grahamstown surpass the quality of any hotel in the area.
• If you plan on attending the annual National Arts Festival, be prepared to book your accommodations well in advance, as people reserve their spots up to a year ahead of time. nationalartsfestival.co.za

1. Fiddlewood Fields: Unbeatable luxury cottages in a stunning garden
Tripadvisor No. 11 of 40 B&BS/Inns
I’ve noticed that pretty much every home in Grahamstown has a garden cottage available for rent. However, Liz Thomas has taken things to the next level with her three beautifully furnished cottages and the lovely Blue Room, which has its own private garden entrance. These accommodations are not only elegant but also incredibly comfortable, each with its own outdoor seating area where you can relax and enjoy the gorgeous garden. Blue Room and Rose Cottage can accommodate two to three people in a king-size extra-length bed that can also be converted into two single beds. Plus, there’s a sleeper couch in the lounge area. As for Sunbird and Butterfly, they have three single beds on an upstairs mezzanine and a king-size bed downstairs, allowing them to sleep a total of five people. Liz offers a tasty full English breakfast for just R60 per person, as well as dinner upon request. But if you prefer to cook for yourself, worry not, as the cottages come with compact, well-equipped kitchens and a Weber grill that you can use. In addition to these wonderful amenities, you can also enjoy secure off-street parking, which is conveniently hidden from view by the lush garden and pool. Considering the level of luxury you get to experience here, staying at these cottages is a total steal.
Room tip: Personally, I really like the fact that Rose Cottage is freestanding and even has its own oven. Sunbird and Butterfly, on the other hand, offer the most beds, but honestly, I’d be happy in any of these units.
Cost: It’s R475 per person for sharing a room, and only R300 per person if you have kids attending school.

St. Aidans: A Home Away from Home
Let me tell you about St. Aidans, a charming Victorian stone cottage that I call my second home. It’s not just any home, though; it’s a cozy and comfortable place. Inside this lovely cottage, you’ll find five rooms with en-suite bathrooms. They have a four-star rating, so you can expect quality and comfort. And if that’s not enough, there’s also a fancy self-catering suite across the road that will make you feel like a VIP. Oh, and did I mention the full English breakfast? It’s the perfect start to your day, and after that, you have full access to the kitchen and the well-kept garden. If you’re in the mood for a delicious dinner, just let me know, and I’ll whip something up for you.
When you step inside, you’ll notice that my taste in decor is quite feminine. I love chintz and crochet, and I take great pride in maintaining high standards when it comes to the quality and cleanliness of the place. But what really sets St. Aidans apart is my personal touch. I’m here to make sure you have the best experience in Grahamstown. I want you to know all the best things to do, the finest places to eat, and how to make the most of your time here.
Tip: My favorite room is the double Chapel. It offers breathtaking views and has its own balcony. You should also consider booking the Heart room, which is right next to it. These two rooms on the upper floor share a cozy lounge area, making them perfect for a group of friends or family traveling together.
Price: B&B rates start from R650 per person if you’re sharing a room. Children under 12 can stay for R375 per person.

As I explored the room further, I couldn’t help but notice the carefully curated collection of antique photographs adorning the walls. Ranked 21st out of 40 B&Bs/Inns on Tripadvisor!
In Grahamstown, there are many beautiful old buildings with historic importance. However, one that caught my attention was this grand Victorian house. It was built by AN White at the beginning of the 20th century, who also happened to establish the town’s very first trading store that is still around today. Mimosa, as it’s called, remained in the White family until 2003. That’s when Sasha and Martin Scholtz purchased it from White’s granddaughter. The Scholtz family has done an exceptional job preserving the charming old-world feel of the house.
They even created a separate private section within Mimosa, complete with its own veranda. This cozy unit consists of a beautifully furnished master bedroom featuring a queen-size bed, kilim rugs, and a Victorian fireplace. In addition, there’s a second bedroom with two single beds, also boasting a Victorian fireplace. Both rooms have doors that open onto the private veranda, which overlooks a sprawling garden and a swimming pool. They also share a bathroom and a small kitchenette that is stocked with tea, filter coffee, milk, and rusks.
Here’s a tip: If you decide to occupy both rooms, the main bedroom or veranda can serve as a gathering spot since there is no lounge area. And when it’s time to eat, you can enjoy your meals at a small table in the kitchenette or on the veranda.
The prices are as follows: R480 per person for self-catering and R530 per person for bed and breakfast. Children under 12 years old can enjoy a half-price discount.

I’m Dez Weeks, and I used to work as a zoology graduate at the Albany Museum. For four amazing years, I lived in South America, immersing myself in its culture and collecting interesting objects along the way. Now, I’ve put all these quirky and fascinating artifacts to use by decorating my cottage with them.
When you step into my cottage, you’ll find a unique blend of a bedroom and lounge. The space is open-plan, allowing for a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Just a few steps up, you’ll discover a charming kitchen, complete with a door that leads to a lush secret garden.
As your host, I strive to make your stay as comfortable as possible. I’ll greet you with fresh flowers and ensure the kitchen is well-stocked with basic breakfast ingredients. You’ll find everything you need to start your day right – cereals, yogurt, fruit, eggs, cheese, and even olive oil. The kitchen itself is equipped with a fridge, hot plate, microwave, table, and two chairs.
The Mhambi cottage is designed to cater to the needs of academics and post-grads seeking a peaceful sanctuary where they can write and focus. But it’s not just for scholars – anyone who appreciates the boho-decor style will feel right at home here. The garden, with its pebble pathways, tree ferns, and clivias, is a delightful addition that adds to the whole experience.
Before you make your choice, here’s a tip: if you’re traveling alone, you’ll be glad to know that I only charge R385 per night for solo travelers. It’s a fantastic deal!
Speaking of cost, the regular rate for the Mhambi cottage is R375 per person when sharing. However, if you plan on staying for a longer period, I’m open to negotiating the rates. That way, you can enjoy the comforts of this unique cottage for as long as you like.
If you’re interested in making a booking or have any questions, you can reach me through grahamstownaccommodation.co.za. I look forward to welcoming you to this one-of-a-kind retreat!
6. Bartholomew’s Loft – The Coolest Old Stuff
Hey there, imagine stumbling upon a hidden treasure trove of history right in the heart of town. That’s exactly what you’ll find at Bartholomew’s Loft, the ultimate destination for history enthusiasts like you and me. The charm of this place is unparalleled.
Step into Bartholomew’s Loft, and prepare to be transported back in time. It’s like entering a portal that takes you on an extraordinary journey through the ages. I don’t know about you, but the allure of being surrounded by centuries-old artifacts and stories from long ago fills me with awe and wonder.
At Bartholomew’s Loft, you’ll find an impressive collection of historic artifacts that will make your brain fizz with curiosity. Each item tells a story, weaving a narrative that brings history to life right before your eyes. The moment I stepped inside, I was entranced by the atmosphere of mystery and discovery that permeates every nook and cranny of the space.
One of the things that sets Bartholomew’s Loft apart is the way they curate their collection. The attention to detail is extraordinary. It’s like they’ve carefully handpicked each item, making sure it’s not just historically significant, but also visually captivating. The result is a remarkable showcase of human achievement throughout the ages.
I’ve always been fascinated by history, but Bartholomew’s Loft takes it to a whole new level. There’s something magical about being in the presence of tangible relics from the past. It’s like time travel, but without the need for a DeLorean. I get lost in the stories behind each object, imagining the people who once owned them and the lives they lived.
Whether you’re a seasoned history buff or just starting your exploration, Bartholomew’s Loft is the perfect place to dive headfirst into the wonders of the past. It’s a treasure trove of knowledge and inspiration, waiting to be discovered. So, grab your magnifying glass and prepare for an adventure you won’t soon forget.
Bartholomew’s Loft is not just a museum; it’s an experience. So, what are you waiting for? Embark on a journey through time and let the stories of the past unfold before your very eyes. Trust me, once you step foot inside Bartholomew’s Loft, you’ll never look at history the same way again.
I found this special lodging on TripAdvisor, ranked number 8 out of 24. It’s located at the intersection of Cross and Bartholomew streets in Grahamstown, which used to be the artisan quarter in the 19th century. It’s called Bartholomew’s Loft, and it’s a unique place made up of restored national monuments. When you enter, it feels like you’re stepping into a small whitewashed village surrounded by a cobbled courtyard, hidden away behind tall gates.
Each unit in Bartholomew’s Loft is different. There’s a three-bedroom Loft that was once a church, and a Corner House from 1852 that used to be a bakery. It’s quite similar to another place called High Corner (which you can find on page 49) because it offers a combination of self-catering and bed and breakfast options. However, the original owners of Bartholomew’s Loft were probably not as wealthy as those of High Corner. Plus, Bartholomew’s Loft is in a slightly more rundown part of town, like the nearby Mhambi.
When you stay at Bartholomew’s Loft, I suggest parking your car inside the gate in the courtyard, especially at night. Safety first, you know. And if you’re hungry in the morning, they serve breakfast (which costs R85 per person) in the original bakery. It’s a nice touch!
If you’re looking for a one-bedroom unit, I recommend the Court Yard or Patio Suite. They are absolutely adorable and have everything you need for a self-catering stay. The Court Yard suite even opens up to a delightful private garden. However, if you prefer a room with bed and breakfast in the Corner House, be aware that it’s right by the main road and can get noisy due to traffic.
Now, let’s talk about the costs. If you want to stay in a bed and breakfast room at Bartholomew’s Loft, it will cost you R475 per person when sharing. For children under 12, it’s R150 per person. If you’d rather stay in one of the self-catering units, it’s R415 per person when sharing. And if you’re traveling in a group of six, you can reserve The Loft, which sleeps six people, for R1650.
If you want more information, you can visit their website at bartholomewsloft.co.za.

Six years ago, my family and I moved to Grahamstown, a charming town where our children attend St Andrew’s College. To make our lives easier, we purchased a beautiful stone house on Oatlands Road. As an interior decorator and project manager, my wife Emma had the brilliant idea to renovate and transform the two stone cottages at the end of our driveway. Her talent and hard work have truly turned them into stylish havens.
Both cottages feature an open-plan design, combining the lounge and bedroom into one cozy space. Additionally, each cottage has its own fully equipped kitchen, complete with a fridge, stove, and microwave. To make our guests feel at home, we also provide ground coffee, tea, rusks, and fresh milk. And let’s not forget about the outdoor areas! Each cottage has its own furnished space, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the fresh air. Of course, our guests are also more than welcome to explore the main garden.
Now, let me share some tips with you. Cottage One is the larger of the two, featuring three single beds. On the other hand, Cottage Two, located behind it, offers more privacy and boasts a comfortable king-size bed.
Now, I know you must be curious about the cost. Well, I have good news for you! The rate is only R580 per person when sharing.
If you’re interested in booking or if you have any more questions, please visit our website at grahamstownaccommodation.co.za. We can’t wait to welcome you!
8. High Corner
Have you ever wondered why some corners of a room or a building seem to be more significant than others? It’s fascinating to think about why these high corners hold our attention and evoke a sense of intrigue. In this article, I will explore the allure and symbolism behind high corners and why they captivate our imagination.
High corners have a certain air of mystery and wonder about them. They beckon you to explore and discover what lies beyond. When you enter a room, your eyes naturally gravitate towards these elevated corners. They command attention and create a focal point that draws you in.
One of the key reasons high corners are so captivating is their ability to elevate our perspective. By drawing our gaze upward, they encourage us to see things from a different vantage point. Looking up at a high corner gives us a sense of expansiveness and possibility.
Besides their visual appeal, high corners also have a symbolic significance. They represent potential and aspiration. Just as we look up to the sky and dream of reaching greater heights, high corners remind us to set our sights high and aspire to achieve our goals.
Moreover, high corners possess a certain enigmatic charm. They inspire our curiosity and spark our imagination. We wonder what secrets and stories these corners hold. In our minds, they become gateways to hidden realms and magical adventures.
When someone designs a room or a building, they must take into account the power of high corners. Choosing the right design elements and positioning can make a vast difference in how these corners impact us. Architects and interior designers understand the significance of high corners in creating a captivating and awe-inspiring space.
So, the next time you find yourself in a room with high corners, take a moment to appreciate their beauty and significance. Allow your imagination to roam free and envision the possibilities that lie beyond these elevated spaces. High corners are not just architectural features; they are portals to inspiration and wonder.
Tripadvisor ranked this B&B at No. 5 out of 40!
I have discovered a charming assortment of historic buildings on High Street that are ideal if you want to be right in the heart of town. You’ll be directly across from the Drostdy Arch entrance to Rhodes University and just a short walk away from numerous restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. This unique collection of buildings includes the 1814 Messenger’s Cottage, which is believed to be the oldest in Grahamstown, as well as the former Saddle Shop and Grahamstown Gentlemen’s Club located in the same building. There’s also The Tannery. The Club even added an extra floor in 1862 to accommodate country members visiting from out of town. Nowadays, the four B&B rooms occupy this space, still boasting the original Oregon pine wall paneling, tall ceilings, and furnished with wonderful Cape antiques. There are also three self-catering units behind the guest house that are in excellent condition and incredibly popular due to their fantastic pricing. The best part? You’re within close proximity to a variety of breakfast options. Personally, I prefer the Messenger’s Cottage, with its two bedrooms and all on one level.
Top tip: If you’re going for the B&B option, be sure to book either the Thomas Stubbs or Guy Butler rooms, just to experience the incredible wood paneling.
Cost: B&B starts at R620 per person sharing, with a rate of R230 per person for those under 10. The self-catering option starts at R520 per person sharing, and children under 10 stay for free.

9. Colonel Graham Guest House
Let me tell you about Colonel Graham Guest House. It’s actually made up of four separate buildings. Out of all of them, my favorite is Frances House, which was built in 2016. This place is perfect if you like a clean and modern space. The rooms are spacious, and you can choose between a king bed or twin beds. There’s even a small lounge area, a bar fridge, air conditioning, and a modern bathroom. Oh, and if you want a great view, make sure to book an upstairs room. The cost is from R655 per person, and that includes breakfast. If you’re interested, you can visit their website at colonelgrahamguesthouse.co.za.
10. Cottage in the Garden
Now, let’s talk about Cottage in the Garden. It’s a charming little studio that’s perfect for two people. It’s tucked away in a quiet corner, and it even has a small patio where you can enjoy the beautiful garden views. And here’s the best part – if it’s available, you can get it at a great price. The cost is from only R300 per person. To find out more, you can visit their website at cottageinthegarden.co.za.
11. Apple Bee
Hey there! Let me tell you about Jeannine Evans’ amazing one-bedroom garden cottages. They’re so cozy and comfortable, they’ve earned a well-deserved four-pineapple rating. Between the two cottages, my personal favorite is Guest Cottage One. It’s absolutely delightful!
Now, I know you might be wondering about the cost. Well, you’ll be pleased to hear that it’s only R440 per person if you’re sharing. That’s quite a steal for such a charming and cozy place.
If, for some reason, Jeannine Evans’ cottages are fully booked, don’t worry! There’s another fantastic option called Lanherne that you might love. It’s a well-run guest house in a beautiful home with lovely rooms. The decor is simple, easy on the eyes, and really pleasant. Plus, it has a fantastic veranda where you can relax and enjoy the view.
At Lanherne, the cost starts at R690 per person for bed and breakfast. It’s definitely worth considering if you’re on the lookout for a wonderful place to stay.
