Top 10 adventure activities on the Garden Route

The Bloukrans Bungy is absolutely amazing – trust me, you have to give it a shot at least once – but there are other exciting outdoor activities to try on the Garden Route. Now, when I say ‘adventure’, I’m not only talking about jumping off a bridge or out of a plane (although you should totally try skydiving too).

You can also go hiking, rafting, track lions, or simply sit down with a sandwich and marvel at a great white shark hunting. There’s an abundance of thrilling activities to experience on the Garden Route, but I want to share my top 10 favorites with you.

Gondwana Game Reserve is an extraordinary place where I had the opportunity to set camera traps and track lions using radio-collar telemetry. It was an adventure that allowed me to immerse myself in the wild and experience the wonders of nature up close.

1. Become a Game Ranger at Gondwana Nature Reserve for Five Nights

If you’re looking for an incredible experience, I highly recommend spending five nights as a game ranger at Gondwana Nature Reserve. For just R11550 per person, you’ll have the chance to engage in a variety of activities, enjoy delicious meals, and stay in comfortable accommodations.

Gondwana Nature Reserve offers an all-inclusive package that covers everything you need for an unforgettable adventure. From game drives to bush walks, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the reserve and witness its diverse wildlife in their natural habitat.

If you’re interested in learning more about the reserve, you can visit their website at gondwanagr.co.za. It’s packed with additional information that will leave you even more excited about the incredible experiences that await you at Gondwana Game Reserve.

I’ve always had a dream of becoming a game ranger, but little did I know that my first taste of this adventure would happen on the Garden Route. Gondwana Nature Reserve, located north of Mossel Bay, used to be entirely commercial farmland only 17 years ago, in 2003. However, the reserve has now been transformed into an 11,000-hectare game park that is dedicated to restoring the area’s natural vegetation and wildlife.

A critical aspect of this restoration effort is Gondwana’s public conservation program, centered around a Tented Eco Camp nestled in the reserve’s northwestern corner. Run by a passionate husband and wife duo, Brendan and Stevie Strydom, this camp offers guests the opportunity to experience the beauty of the reserve while actively participating in a range of hands-on conservation activities. These activities include setting up camera traps, removing invasive plant species, documenting the numbers and locations of different animal species, and keeping an eye out for the newly-introduced lions to see where they might be hiding.

When it comes to preserving wildlife, one crucial aspect is understanding the reserve’s capacity to support animals. In Gondwana, there are currently 13 elephants, including this adorable little one.

Joining this conservation journey offers a truly immersive experience. Not only will you witness day-to-day wildlife conservation efforts, but you’ll also get to enjoy delectable cuisine (Stevie’s malva pudding is out of this world!). The accommodations are top-notch, with luxurious tented options that provide the perfect blend of comfort and nature.

Don’t expect to sleep in, as the breakfast call comes before dawn. However, you’ll have plenty of time to relax during lunch, perhaps taking a dip in the refreshing plunge pool. After an action-packed day, you can unwind with a well-deserved beer or a glass of wine under the breathtaking starry sky.

2. Take a leap of faith and skydive over Mossel Bay

If you’re ready for an adrenaline rush, why not jump out of a plane and experience the thrill of skydiving? With prices starting from R2800 for a 10,000-foot tandem jump, you can soar through the skies and take in breathtaking views of Mossel Bay. For more information and booking, visit skydivemosselbay.com.

When I embarked on my first tandem skydive, the thought that gave me solace was the assumption that the man attached to my back didn’t desire to perish either. As you sit precariously with your feet dangling above a vast expanse of nothingness, the notion becomes comforting. However, there isn’t much time to dwell on that thought before you’re thrust into the unknown, your stomach clenching as you hurtle towards the distant coastline. And then, you’re soaring. From the ground, 30 to 40 seconds of free fall may not seem like much, but the surge of adrenaline warps time, causing the descent to feel like an eternity. If you’ve never experienced it before and have even the slightest inkling to give it a try, I implore you to devise a plan and take the plunge. Including a skydive over one of the world’s most stunning coastlines on your adventure seeker’s must-do list is a no-brainer.

3. How about staying at Ebb and Flow Campsite and taking a canoe trip to the majestic waterfall?

And the best part? It won’t break the bank. Camping starts from just R200 per stand for two people. If you prefer a bit more comfort, you can grab a two-sleeper rondavel for R220 or a four-sleeper cottage for R380 per person. Oh, and don’t forget about the daily conservation fee of R40 per adult and R20 per child (Wildcard holders get in for free).

Once you’re settled in, head to the campsite and rent a canoe. For just R140, you can enjoy three hours of paddling or go all out and rent one for the whole day for R200. It’s an incredible deal!

Hey there! Let me take you on an amazing adventure along the coast in Wilderness. You see, there’s this awesome campsite called SANParks’ Ebb and Flow, and it’s the perfect place to have a chilled-out and exciting time.

The campsite is split into two parts, right by the Touws River. This river winds its way through the lush coastal forest, inviting you to go on a canoeing escapade. Just imagine gliding through crystal-clear water, with the boat gently moving along. It’s such a peaceful experience!

As you paddle upstream, you’ll be in awe of the stunning scenery around you. After about 45 minutes or so, covering a distance of 3km, you’ll reach a rocky beach. That’s the farthest you can go by boat, but don’t worry, the adventure continues!

Right from the beach, you can join the Giant Kingfisher Trail. It’s a trail that follows the river’s eastern bank. As you walk along, you’ll be treated to magnificent views. And guess what? The trail leads you to a breathtaking waterfall and some deep swimming pools. It’s the perfect spot to take a refreshing dip and really connect with nature.

So, if you’re up for a thrilling and relaxing time, look no further. Head to SANParks’ Ebb and Flow Campsite in Wilderness. Get ready to paddle, explore, and immerse yourself in the wonders of this beautiful place!

Once you’ve paddled peacefully for 3km, it’s time to switch gears and venture onto the trail for a 3.5km hike to reach the magnificent waterfall.

The hike to the waterfall is not demanding, so there’s no need to worry. Allow yourself approximately 45 minutes to an hour for a relaxed and enjoyable stroll. You can rent canoes from Ebb and Flow Campsite for either three hours or the entire day. While it’s possible to make a round trip to the waterfall within three hours if you exert yourself, it’s much better to take your time and savor the experience throughout the day.

When you hike along the waterfall, you’ll be surrounded by the stunning native forest. And at the end of the trail, there are sparkling pools waiting for you to take a refreshing dip.

Paragliding offers a unique opportunity to feel like an eagle, but without having to jump out of a plane or zip past cliffs in a wingsuit. Instead, you gently ride the currents of hot air, effortlessly floating through the sky on thermals. Trust me, once you start, you won’t want to come back down to Earth.

5. Go on a hike at Robberg Nature Reserve and keep an eye out for great white sharks

If you’re looking for an unforgettable hiking experience, head to the Robberg Nature Reserve. Not only will you get to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature, but you might also catch a glimpse of a majestic great white shark. The cost for staying at The Fountain Shack is R920 for four people, with an additional fee of R320 for each extra person (the shack can accommodate up to eight). Keep in mind that there is a daily conservation fee of R40 per adult and R20 per child, but if you’re a Wildcard member, you get in for free. For more information, visit capenature.co.za.

When my friends and I set out on our overnight hike to Fountain Shack in Plettenberg Bay’s Robberg Nature Reserve, we were hoping for good weather. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on our side as the rain started pouring just 10 minutes into our journey. Instead of completing the usual two-hour loop around the north of Robberg peninsular, we decided to take a shortcut and headed straight towards the south-side exit trail. Despite the rain, we managed to reach the shack in just 30 minutes.

Upon arriving at the shack, we were disappointed to find that the outdoor braai, or barbecue area, wasn’t protected from the elements. This meant that starting a fire was impossible, even with the 3kg bag of compressed braai fuel we had been given at the reception. However, we were relieved to discover that the shack itself was a sturdy hiking cabin equipped with comfortable mattresses, solar lighting, and crockery.

As the storm raged outside, with the wind howling and waves crashing against the rocks, we quickly got the gas stove going and prepared a hearty meal. It was a comforting and warm experience amidst the chaos of the storm.

Top 10 adventure activities on the Garden Route

When I visited Robberg during a late spring storm, I couldn’t help but be in awe of its wild and breathtaking beauty.

The following morning, the sun seemed to shine brighter, so we decided to take a different route along the northern side of the trail. I must admit, though, that I wouldn’t recommend this path during high tide. The trail runs very close to the sea, and the rocky sections can become extremely slippery when wet. We took a break on the cliff edge, just above the seal breeding colony, and were treated to an incredible sight. We spotted a great white shark stalking a small group of seals in the water below. Unfortunately, it started raining again, and I had to pack away my camera. However, it’s not uncommon to spot sharks from Robberg, as you can see in this amazing video by William Ashurst below.

6. Experience an adrenaline rush with Bloukrans Bungy

If you’re up for an adventure, you won’t want to miss the thrill of committing to the void at Bloukrans Bungy. It’s an experience like no other.

Cost: You can book online for R990.
For more information, visit: faceadrenalin.com

I have to admit, I was really scared for this one. I mean, more scared than when I went skydiving – and that’s saying something. I guess it’s because at 216 meters, you can see everything below you so clearly – the rocks, the trees, everything. Plus, when you go tandem skydiving, you have an experienced instructor attached to you, so there’s that added sense of security. But when I booked my Bloukrans Bungy jump, I promised myself I would do a cool-looking swallow-dive. Well, let’s just say I didn’t exactly pull it off. I ended up looking more like a Lindt Bunny falling off a shelf. It wasn’t the most flattering sight, but it was absolutely mind-blowing. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll gather up the courage to do it all over again.

Watch as I show you how it’s done! Even with rain pouring down into the Bloukrans valley, a Face Adrenalin crew member fearlessly takes the leap.

7. Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours

For only R650 per person, Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours not only gives you an incredible adventure but also includes a light meal and soft drink at the end. If you want more information, just head over to canopytour.co.za.

But that’s not all! If you’re planning a trip to the Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn, you should definitely check out the Cango Caves Zipline. It has a 500-metre line in the mountains just south of the caves, and it only costs R295 per person. For more details, visit cangocavesestate.co.za.

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or someone who prefers a more relaxed experience, Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours has got you covered. You can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the area while getting an exhilarating alternative to leaping off bridges.

Top 10 adventure activities on the Garden Route

Are you ready to zip through the trees with Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours? It’s an exciting adventure that will take you on a thrilling journey through the breathtaking treetops of the Tsitsikamma forest.

When you arrive at the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours base in Storms River village, you’ll be greeted by a friendly local crew who will guide you every step of the way. They will make sure you are securely strapped to steel cables that are suspended high up between the towering trees.

The tour consists of 10 connected platforms that allow you to glide smoothly from one tree to another. As you soar through the air, you’ll be surrounded by the lush greenery of the forest, immersing yourself in its natural beauty.

The duration of the tour depends on the size of the group, but typically it takes around two to three hours to complete. During this time, you’ll have the opportunity to marvel at the incredible views and experience the thrill of flying through the canopy.

So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure, Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours is the perfect choice. Put on your harness, take a deep breath, and get ready to soar through the treetops like never before!

When I was looking for an adventure, I discovered an incredible opportunity that elevated my excitement to new heights. There are ten platforms, all connected by steel zip lines that stretch up to 100 meters long and hang thirty meters above the forest floor.

8. Take the plunge with Blackwater Tubing

Are you ready to experience the thrill of a lifetime? The cost of a full day of Blackwater Tubing is R995, or you can opt for a half day (which lasts for 3.5 hours) for R595 per person. Keep in mind that there are additional SANPark conservation fees of R40 for the half day option and R60 for the full day option. If you want more information, head over to blackwatertubing.net for all the details.

To go tubing on Storms River, you need to be reasonably fit. It’s not like going down serious rapids, but you do need to feel comfortable being in the water. They offer both half-day and full-day trips, but the full-day one is the best. It takes you down into the gorge, where you can experience jumps and rapids, depending on how high the water is. If the water level is too high, they won’t let you into the gorge. So, it’s better to choose a clear day after a little bit of rain, when the water level is medium to low. This provides a good flow and makes it more fun. It’s a medium adrenaline activity, but the scenery is absolutely stunning. I particularly love the exit at Storms River Mouth – it’s one of my favorite places in South Africa.

Today I want to share one of my personal experiences with you. It happened on day 4 of the Otter Trail when I visited the Andre Huts. Let me tell you, it was quite an adventure!

10. Let’s Catch Some Waves at Jeffreys Bay!

Are you ready to dive into the world of surfing? If you’re looking for an exciting activity, learning to surf at Jeffreys Bay is something you won’t want to miss.

First things first, let’s talk about the cost. A group lesson will set you back R240, while a 90-minute private lesson will cost you R340. And here’s the best part – the price includes a board and a wetsuit! So, you don’t have to worry about any additional expenses.

When it comes to learning to surf, it’s important to have the right equipment. At Jeffreys Bay, you’ll be provided with everything you need. The instructors at learn2surf.co.za will make sure you have a fantastic experience.

Now, let’s talk about what you’ll get out of this experience. Surfing is a double-edged sword – not only is it an adrenaline-pumping activity, but it also allows you to connect with nature and experience a sense of freedom.

Moreover, surfing has a regenerative response on the mind and body. There’s something truly magical about riding the waves and feeling the power of the ocean beneath you. It’s a unique way to unwind and leave your worries behind.

So, if you’re ready to take on the challenge of learning to surf, give it a try at Jeffreys Bay. You won’t be disappointed!

Call me a scaredy-cat, but my fear of sharks means I’ll never be the legendary surfer I dreamed of when I was a kid. But that doesn’t mean I can’t live out my surfing fantasies, even if it’s just for a day. And where better to do it than J-Bay, South Africa’s ultimate surfing destination?

Now, don’t get too excited. I won’t be tackling those famous ‘Supertubes’ on my first day. There’s a much calmer beach located a bit further down from the tubes, so I won’t get trampled by seasoned pros. It’s a whole different experience when you manage to stand up on a surfboard for the very first time. And honestly, I think my fear of sharks gave me that extra push. It really forces you to focus on getting up and out of the water.

Just remember, the surfing conditions can change from day to day. If the waves aren’t beginner-friendly, you’ll need to be open to rescheduling. Flexibility is key, my friend. So, are you ready to take on the waves and conquer that fear of sharks? Let’s do it!
