Tintswalo Atlantic: A Dreamy Getaway on the Beautiful Cape Coast
Imagine a place tucked away beneath the breathtaking Chapman’s Peak Drive, nestled within the majestic Table Mountain National Park. This is where you’ll find Tintswalo Atlantic, a lodge that boasts one of the most awe-inspiring locations in all of South Africa. Curious to know more? Well, let me take you on a virtual journey!
Your Escape to Tintswalo Atlantic
Imagine standing at the edge of towering cliffs, feeling the power of crashing waves beneath your feet. Inside, you find yourself immersed in a world of luxurious comfort and exquisite dining. This is Tintswalo Atlantic, a masterpiece created by Ernest and Gaye Corbett. Their love for this enchanting location, once known as Koeïl Bay Youth Centre, led them to transform it into a small piece of heaven, becoming a cherished addition to their chain of Tintswalo lodges.
Located within a national park, the design of Tintswalo Atlantic had to conform to strict guidelines and eco-friendly standards. To meet these requirements, every building structure was meticulously constructed on elevated platforms. This thoughtful approach allows for easy removal, if needed, after the 30-year lease expires. As you explore the lodge, you’ll discover it gracefully nestled along the base of the cliffs, surrounded by ancient milkwood trees. The power of the Atlantic is held at bay by the strong gabions that line the lodge.
I’ll never forget the day my partner and I arrived at this incredible place. It was a beautiful autumn afternoon, filled with golden sunlight and a gentle breeze. We were immediately drawn to one of the heated pools, where we could relax and soak in the warmth.
But what really caught our attention were the hammocks. Nestled just below the deck, they were unlike any we had ever seen before. Lodge manager Ryno du Rand explained that he had crafted them from three massive tree trunks that had washed ashore during a storm. It was truly a stroke of genius, creating the most unique and mesmerizing hammocks in all of South Africa.
As I laid back in the hammock, I couldn’t help but marvel at the breathtaking view before me. The roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean were just meters away, providing a captivating soundtrack to our relaxation. And when the tide was high, the water would gently slosh beneath us, creating a soothing rhythm that added an extra layer of tranquility.
It was in that moment, surrounded by the comfort, coolness, and elegance of our surroundings, that I realized how lucky we were to be here. This place was a true haven, a sanctuary where we could escape from the demands of everyday life and simply be one with nature. The combination of serene interiors and the raw power of the ocean was a perfect balance, making this experience both invigorating and calming.
So, if you’re searching for a place that offers the perfect blend of relaxation and wonder, look no further. This is a destination that will leave you speechless, as it did for me and my partner. Come and discover the magic for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.
I stayed at this amazing lodge that had a collection of 10 fancy suites and a special presidential suite. Each suite was named after and designed to reflect a famous island, like Zanzibar or Sicily. We had the pleasure of staying in the Lamu-themed suite, which was perfect because I had just written a book set in Lamu. The room had a wonderful East African vibe with beautiful pictures of dhows, dark-wood furniture, and intricately designed doors. The balcony had the most breathtaking views, and inside, we had a cozy fireplace, an ensuite bathroom, and a fully stocked mini bar. The room was adorned with flower petals and seashells, and the bathroom had a lovely foam bath and romantic candles.
When I think of sunset at Tintswalo, I imagine a dreamy scene. As the day winds down, I join other guests on the main deck to savor drinks and delicious canapés. As we sip, our eyes are drawn to the breathtaking view of the sun setting behind Hout Bay’s Sentinel, a majestic peak that resembles a shark’s fin emerging from the deepening darkness. It’s like witnessing a captivating play of light and colors on the bay and mountains. And on the horizon, we witness the spectacle of enormous waves crashing onto Tafelberg and Dungeons reefs, creating plumes of misty spray. The mist hangs in the air, giving the scene an otherworldly quality.
After indulging in sundowners, it’s time for a remarkable four-course dinner. The tantalizing menu offers a variety of mouthwatering options like biltong-dusted kuku loin or kingklip wrapped in Parma ham. What makes it even more special is the fact that the kitchen is open to the dining room. We get to watch the skilled chefs in action while savoring a glass of wine. The ambiance is truly magical.
As the night deepens, I take a moonlit stroll on the deck, enjoying the tranquility and the crash of the waves below. It’s the perfect way to end the day and prepare for a restful night’s sleep.
