The Ultimate Guide To The West Coast

Forget about the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse yourself in the endless beauty of the West Coast’s beaches and clear blue skies.

Written by Georgia East

Step away from the noise and lights of the city and enter a world of tranquility and natural wonder. The West Coast beckons with its serene beaches, fresh seafood feasts, and charming coastal towns. It’s a place where time slows down, allowing you to fully appreciate the soothing rhythm of the ocean waves and the invigorating scent of campfires.

When I first catch a glimpse of the shimmering blue waters of Langebaan Lagoon while driving along the R27 highway, I can’t help but feel a sense of wonder. The West Coast is truly a captivating place, from the vibrant saltpans of Velddrif to the lively fishing boats bringing in their bountiful catches in Paternoster. It’s a place that isn’t concerned with fancy conveniences or caring about what others think; it’s authentic, down-to-earth, and genuine. And let me tell you, as soon as you set foot here, you’ll be enchanted, and you’ll be counting down the days until you can return.

So, what are your favorite spots to explore on the West Coast? I’m curious to know! Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Let’s Start with Langebaan

When it comes to this part of the coast, everyone knows that Langebaan Lagoon is the top spot to visit. It’s like being transported to the Greek Isles without ever leaving South Africa. The water is a stunning shade of blue, the beaches are protected and serene, and the views are absolutely breathtaking. People have been flocking to this place for as long as anyone can remember. And it’s not just about the natural beauty – Langebaan is a town built for pleasure. There are so many things to do here, from trying out the local restaurants and going shopping, to engaging in exciting activities like kitesurfing, fishing, and even playing golf. No matter what you’re into, you’ll find something to enjoy in Langebaan.

If you’re making your way up the R27, make sure you don’t miss Yzerfontein, a charming village located just an hour away from Cape Town. It’s the perfect pit stop before you reach the lagoon. People love Yzerfontein for its laidback lifestyle and its close proximity to the city. But that’s not all it has to offer. The food scene here is really taking off and gaining attention. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the growing number of foodie attractions in this little town. Darling is another nearby town that’s worth a visit. It’s a bit eccentric and has a country vibe, but you’ll be amazed at the variety of tasty treats you can find here.

Discover West Coast National Park

Just a quick drive from Langebaan town, you can immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of West Coast National Park. Known worldwide as a haven for wildflowers in August and September, this protected area is also home to an abundance of wildlife and birds. But that’s not all – the park offers a wide range of activities that celebrate the sun, sea, and sand. Whether you’re a fan of swimming or intrigued by the idea of a houseboat holiday, West Coast National Park has it all. Interested? Click here to learn more.

    Discover Velddrif

    By Georgia East

If you follow the R27 highway all the way to the end, you’ll reach Velddrif. It’s a town surrounded by beautiful pastel-pink salt pans and the powerful Berg River. This is where the bokkom is born – the famous dried fish delicacy of the West Coast that is both incredibly salty and pungent. Velddrif is a place that blends industry and leisure, making it a perfect destination for everyone, from fishermen to artists. It truly captures the vibrant and welcoming spirit of the West Coast.

    Discover Bokkomlaan

The heart of Velddrif’s history lies in this street that runs alongside the river – you can’t miss it with its charming fishing huts and delicate wooden jetties. Once a bustling fishing spot, the Laan is now a protected heritage area that can’t be developed. While only a few huts are still used for drying fish, the rest have been transformed into a delightful mix of eateries, shops, and cafés. The most popular spot is Columbine Co owned by Albert Junior Cornelissen. Here, you can savor a selection of teas and coffees – and get to know the locals while sitting on the stoep. Keep an eye out for the Laan’s resident pelicans too!

Find it at Off Voortrekker Road (R399), Velddrif

Craving the creaminess of camembert or the boldness of blue cheese? Look no further! David and Carolyn Malan produce the Kokerboom Kaas range, which includes a variety of hard and soft cheeses as well as yogurt. They use milk from Guernsey cows at nearby Langrietvlei Farm. These artisanal cheeses and charcuterie can be found all along the West Coast and in Cape Town.
