Down the line, as the locals say, lies the coastal neighborhood called Fish Hoek. The main street might seem unexciting after the vibrant Kalk Bay, but it is home to one of the finest beaches in Cape Town.

Fish Hoek Beach

Fish Hoek is a beloved beach for families in Cape Town. It has calm, swimmable waters and a wide sandy shoreline, perfect for building sandcastles. During the summer, the water temperature is a pleasant 21 degrees, and at low tide, it’s absolutely gorgeous. In recent years, a shark net has been added to the Sunnycove Corner, providing even more peace of mind when swimming in the sheltered water at the southern end of the beach.

Walkers also enjoy strolling along this shore. On the Clovelly side of the beach, dogs can be seen happily playing in the sand. The beach is dog-friendly north of the small lighthouse, where the promenade ends. Many people take their daily walks along Jager’s Walk, a 1.2-kilometer path that connects the beach to Sunnycove station. Along the way, there are painted cement benches where you can sit and enjoy the view. This walk was built in 1933 and has been a favorite pastime for generations of families. The rock pools along this picturesque stretch are perfect for paddling, adding to the joy of the experience.

Good to know: After a hot and sandy day at the beach, what could be more satisfying than an ice-cold ice cream on a piping hot waffle? The Fish Hoek Galley kiosk serves these treats, as well as legendary soft-serve cones that taste like summer should!

Discover Elsie’s Peak

Are you ready for a breathtaking adventure? Join me on an exciting hike up the scenic Elsie’s Peak trail! This incredible 4.2km circular route will take us to the summit, where we can admire the majestic radio mast and soak in the beauty of the indigenous rooiels (butterspoon) trees. Whether you start your journey from Fish Hoek or Glencairn, the path is well-marked and easy to navigate. You’ll be pleased to know that this hike is suitable for both children and dogs, making it a great family outing.

As we ascend, be prepared for a few steep sections and chilly winds. However, the stunning fragrance of fynbos will enchant your senses, and the panoramic views will leave you in awe. From the peak, you’ll be treated to a sweeping vista of False Bay, stretching all the way to Strand and Gordon’s Bay.

Here’s some helpful information: We can start the hike from either Berg Road in Fish Hoek or Golconda Street in Glencairn Heights. The entire adventure will take approximately 2 to 3 hours, giving us plenty of time to soak in the scenery and create lasting memories.

I am a big fan of the Lighthouse Cafe, even though it’s not located right on the waterfront. You can find it across the Main Road. The atmosphere inside the cafe is so charming, with a fresh and seaside vibe. The food they serve is absolutely delicious, especially their battered fish and chips. They also have a great selection of dishes like fresh linefish, pork belly with crispy crackling, and a variety of burgers, pizzas, and pastas. Oh, and their crème brûlée is to die for!

The staff at the Lighthouse Cafe are super friendly, and the service is top-notch. It’s no wonder that it’s a popular spot for locals to hang out. If you’re looking for a great place to have breakfast, I highly recommend trying their crispy courgette rotis with poached eggs. It’s a delightful way to start your day!

Simon’s Town Beaches

If you head south from Simon’s Town, you’ll discover a series of secluded coves and beaches. These hidden gems provide a perfect spot for swimming, thanks to the large boulders that offer protection from strong currents. Plus, you might even get the opportunity to swim with African penguins!

The first beach you’ll come across is Seaforth Beach. Just follow the signs from the Main Road and you’ll find a parking lot. This sandy beach is family-friendly, as it features a small tidal pool where children can safely swim. There’s also a grassy area for picnicking and Seaforth Restaurant, which offers stunning views and delicious seafood.

As you continue along the path behind the restaurant, you’ll reach a wooden gate that leads to Water’s Edge. This little corner of paradise is a secret spot loved by locals. It’s a peaceful and secluded bay, away from the crowds. Kids will be delighted by the rock pools, where they can discover fascinating marine life like starfish and sea anemones.

Just beyond that lies Boulders Beach, famous as the favored home of some of the last African penguins in the world and a popular spot for tourists. This special beach, nestled among the rocks, is a fantastic place to swim. The water is calm and as warm as it gets in Cape Town. It’s best to arrive early so you can find your spot on the sand. The beach is small, and depending on the tide, it can become even smaller. Keep in mind that Boulders Beach is part of Table Mountain National Park, so there is an entrance fee, and they limit the number of visitors to avoid overcrowding.

Windmill Beach is like the hidden gem of Boulders Beach. It’s a bit tucked away, hiding behind the golf course. To discover it, you just need to follow the signs to Boulders and then turn into Bellevue Road. Next, make a right into Links Crescent and keep going until you reach the end. The beach is lovely because the water is shallow and protected by big granite boulders. This makes it a safe place for children to swim. Plus, if you’re lucky, you might even see some penguins waddling around, which is always exciting. This beach is also a great spot for snorkeling because there are a lot of different marine animals to see in the reef. You can also have a picnic here and enjoy the shade under the trees.

About 5km past Simon’s Town, you’ll find the beautiful and secluded Miller’s Point. When you get there, you’ll see that it’s divided into two parts. If you take the first turn-off, you’ll arrive at a caravan park, the Black Marlin restaurant, and a beach. The other turn-off leads to Rumbly Bay, which has boat-launching sites, another beach full of boulders, and an amazing tidal pool that even has a water slide. From the rocky bay, you can enjoy stunning views of the coastline. There are also changing rooms and a picnic area with grass where you can have a braai. Miller’s Point is the perfect place for activities like kayaking, snorkeling, surfskiing, and scuba diving since there are popular dive spots nearby. Just be careful when you park your car, as there are baboons around. Don’t approach or feed them, no matter how sneaky and mischievous they may seem.

Good to know: Between Boulders and Miller’s Point, you’ll find two smaller beaches and rocky coves that are worth checking out: Frank’s/Froggy Pond and Fisherman’s Beach. They have the same calm water, patches of grass, and flat rocks perfect for sunbathing. You can even bring your dog on a leash to these two beaches.
