The Ultimate Garden Route Road Trip

Hey there! Let me tell you about my incredible adventure along the Garden Route. It’s a stretch of approximately 200 kilometers that showcases the breathtaking beauty of deep, lush forests on one side and an endless sparkling blue ocean on the other. Trust me, this place is a real paradise! People flock here for their vacations, enjoying the sun and engaging in exciting activities like fishing, boogie-boarding, kayaking, and surfing.

But you know what? There’s so much more to explore than just the well-known spots. The Garden Route has hidden gems, and I’m here to spill the beans! I took the road less traveled and discovered three amazing towns: Wilderness, Knysna, and Plett. These places are like little slices of heaven tucked away in this natural wonderland.

Tell me, what are some of your favorite places to visit on the Garden Route? Leave your thoughts in the comments below. I’m curious to hear your thoughts!

Day 1: Wilderness

Heading down the N2 towards Wilderness, you can spot the Kaaimans River as it twists and turns, like a mysterious path of dark water. It’s like a tempting melody, beckoning you to embark on an exciting adventure, especially on a scorching summer day.

Jared Watney

You can grab a sturdy kayak and spend an hour exploring the area. First, you can venture into the narrow gorge where the Swart River meets the Kaaimans River, creating a dramatic cascade. Then, paddle downstream to enjoy breathtaking views of the iconic railway bridge. It’s a moment to savor – you can dip your fingers in the gentle current and inhale the refreshing ocean breeze. It’s a chance to leave behind the stresses of a chaotic winter and embrace the start of an exhilarating new adventure. If you prefer to stay dry, you can take on the seven-kilometer Giant Kingfisher Trail. This scenic trail runs along the eastern bank of the Touw River and leads you to a picture-perfect swimming hole where you can cool off.

Hey there! I’m Jared, and I want to tell you about a really cool place called the Map of Africa viewpoint. Trust me, it’s worth checking out!

So, here’s the deal. You take the Wilderness Heights turn-off, and you’ll find yourself on a road that leads you right up to the viewpoint. And let me tell you, the view is absolutely breathtaking! From up there, you can see the whole lake district, and even get a bird’s eye view of the Kaaimans River.

Now, the Kaaimans River is no ordinary river. Nope, it’s got a little something special up its sleeve. As it winds its way through the valley, it has created the shape of Africa! Pretty cool, right? I mean, who knew a river could be so artistic?

But wait, there’s more! If you’re feeling adventurous, this place is also a popular spot for paragliding. Can you imagine soaring through the air, high above the beach and the beautiful blue sea? It’s like something out of a dream!

So, whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or just looking for a relaxing swim, the Map of Africa viewpoint has got you covered. It’s the perfect place to take in the beauty of nature and maybe even make a few memories along the way. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

Kayak the Kaaimans River

Hey there! Let me tell you about this amazing place called Kaaimans Adventures. They offer some really cool activities on the serene waterway in a private nature reserve. You can go on a one-hour river trip by kayak or stand-up paddleboard. They even have a four-seater paddle boat! How awesome is that?
When can you go? Well, they are open every day from 8am to 5pm. So you have plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
How much does it cost? The rental for a one-hour kayak or stand-up paddleboard is R180. But hang on, if you’re a kid, you only have to pay R110. Isn’t that fantastic?
How can you contact them? If you have any questions or want to make a booking, just give them a call at 063 561 0509 or send an email to info@kaaimansadventures.com. They’ll be happy to assist you.
Where can you find them? They are located off the N2, just before or after the bridge, in Wilderness. It’s a great spot to start your adventure!

Let’s Go on the Giant Kingfisher Trail!

By Jared Watney

One of the cool things you can do in Wilderness National Park is hike one of the five trails. I’ll tell you about my favorite one that goes along the Touw River.

It’s a 3.5km trail that takes you to a really pretty waterfall and pool. You can even swim and have a picnic there! If you’re looking for a shorter hike, there are two other trails you can try. The Half Collared Kingfisher Trail is 7.2km and takes you through a shady forest beside the river. The Brown Hooded Kingfisher Trail is 4.1km and leads to the Duiwe River picnic spot. Both of these hikes are really nice too!

You can do these hikes any day between 7am and 5:30pm. If you’re over 18, you’ll need a permit that costs R52. For kids, it’s R26. If you want more information or need to contact someone, you can call 044 887 0046 or 044 887 1197.

The hikes start at Ebb & Flow Camp, which you can find on Ebb and Flow Drive, just off the N2 in Wilderness. There’s a SANParks office there where you can get all the info you need.

Oh, and one more thing! If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try paragliding from the Map of Africa. It’s a really cool experience that you’ll love!

At the Map of Africa viewpoint, you can experience the thrill of tandem paragliding. It’s a breathtaking opportunity to soar like a bird above the glistening ocean and take in the stunning views of the 18 km beach and lakes. The standard flight lasts about 10 minutes, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you can choose the 20-minute flight and even try your hand at piloting.

It’s important to note that the minimum age for paragliding is 14 years old, and there are discounts available for groups of four or more. You can enjoy this experience any day between 9am and 6pm.

The cost for the standard flight is R1 100, while the adventurous flight is R1 600. If you want to capture your experience, you can opt for the GoPro video and photo package for an additional R250.

To find the Map of Africa viewpoint, head to Remskoen Street, off Hoogte Road in Wilderness.

After your paragliding adventure, you might be wondering where to stay and eat. One option is Nima Lodge, a great choice for accommodation.

I’m here to tell you about an incredible place that will take your breath away. Imagine standing on a hilltop, surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills, with the majestic Outeniqua Mountains in the distance. That’s exactly what you’ll find at this unique boutique lodge. It’s a true haven, where you can escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature.

What makes this lodge truly special are the three extraordinary Sand Cabins. These architect-designed cabins are unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. With their multi-level layouts and curved walls inspired by the shape of dunes, they exude a sense of elegance and tranquility. And that’s not all – each cabin has its own separate “tower structure” with a bath strategically placed in front of a large picture window. Can you imagine soaking in a warm bath while taking in the breathtaking views? It’s a truly magical experience.

If you’re looking for something a bit more traditional, the lodge also offers four log cabins. These cabins may have a more classic design, but they are no less impressive. Spacious, modern, and stylish, they provide the perfect retreat for couples looking to unwind and reconnect.

During your stay, you’ll also have access to an “honesty” shop and bar. It’s the perfect place to grab a snack or enjoy a refreshing drink after a day of exploring.

One of the best things about this lodge is its location. It’s just a short stroll away from hiking trails and waterfalls in Wilderness National Park. So whether you’re an avid hiker or simply appreciate the beauty of nature, you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained.

Now, I know what you’re thinking – a place this amazing must be expensive. But you’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn that prices start at just R2,500 per cabin per night. And with a minimum stay of only two nights, it’s the perfect opportunity to escape for a romantic weekend or a much-needed getaway.

If all of this sounds like a dream come true, I encourage you to make a reservation as soon as possible. The lodge is located at 10 Mile Lane in Hoekwil, Wilderness. Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on this incredible experience.

Day 2: Wilderness to Knysna

If you wake up early, you can enjoy a beautiful sunrise by the banks of Island Lake. The fishermen have already started their day, but you can have the peaceful boardwalk trails along the Touw River all to yourself. Our journey takes us inland, up Hoekwil Road, where we will join the famous Seven Passes route. This route is a 75-kilometer blend of dirt and paved roads that connects George and Knysna. It takes us through pastures, hills covered in fynbos, and enchanting forests. It’s an excellent alternative to driving on the busy N2 highway.

Jared Watney

A stop at the Big Tree at Woodville is a must. This ancient Outeniqua yellowwood, which is 800 years old, is the main attraction. However, the leafy forest paths are equally mesmerizing. Take a moment to pause beneath a majestic ironwood tree. There is a serenity in this silence, with nothing but the rustling of leaves or the occasional croak of a Cape rain frog. If you spend more time here, you might be lucky enough to spot a blue duiker or a wild bush pig. You may even catch a glimpse of an olive woodpecker or a Knysna turaco. This forest is a place that rewards those with patience. Before continuing on, make sure to stock up on cold drinks and farm preserves from the Woodville Trading Store. While you’re there, you might spot a few Jersey cows leisurely chewing their cud, as they watch the passing cars create clouds of dust. The drive along this road becomes even more exciting as you descend into the forested gorges. Out of the seven passes, it was the Homtini River that gave the greatest challenge to 19th-century road builder Thomas Bain. However, in a 4×4 vehicle, it’s a breeze to cross the river. Before I know it, I’m already on the other side, in Rheenendal.

Hey, did you know that at Rheenendal, there’s a road that takes you to Millwood? It’s called Bibby’s Hoek Road. If you turn left, you’ll find yourself surrounded by even more forest walks. But, here’s a little history lesson for you – this road actually leads to the site of the Knysna gold rush in the 1880s. Pretty cool, right?

If you’re up for a trip back in time, you can take the Millwood Mine Walk. It’s quite an adventure, as you’ll get to explore the remains of the village and even venture into the old mine tunnels. Just remember to bring a torch!

Now, if you’re more into picnics and swimming, Jubilee Creek’s picnic spot is the place to go. They even have a river pool where you can take a dip and cool off. It’s a hidden gem, so keep an eye out for it!

Oh, and here’s another secret for you – on the way to Millwood, there’s a hiking trail called Drupkelders. Trust me, it’s worth the detour. This trail will lead you to a beautiful stretch of the Homtini River. Picture this: sun filtering through the trees, large rock pools, and even a stunning waterfall. It’s like stepping into a fairytale!

After all these adventures, the final leg of your journey takes you down the Phantom Pass into Knysna. Brace yourself for some jaw-dropping scenery. As you emerge from the forest, you’ll be greeted by the sight of the famous lagoon. It’s a sight you won’t soon forget!

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, grab your torch, and get ready for an unforgettable trip through Rheenendal and Millwood. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

Jared Watney

To truly experience Knysna in a new and exciting way, hop in your car and head towards The Heads. These magnificent cliffs made of sandstone are what separate the lagoon from the Indian Ocean. Take a drive along Coney Glen Road on the Eastern Head and you’ll find yourself at the Heads Viewpoint. From here, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the ocean, the lagoon, and the entire town. It’s a sight that will leave you in awe. So, buckle up and enjoy the beauty of Knysna from this incredible vantage point.

If you enjoy beautiful drives, you absolutely have to experience this 75-kilometer road that combines dirt and pavement and connects George to Knysna through a scenic “back route.” These seven passes were crafted by the skilled road-builder Thomas Bain during the 19th century. You can access the road via Hoekwil Road if you’re coming from Wilderness or Sedgefield. (If you’re in George, just take Madiba Drive to reach the Seven Passes Road.)
Here’s a great tip: There are a few places along the way that are worth stopping at. Don’t miss the chance to see the Big Tree at Woodville, a towering 33-meter yellowwood tree that you can visit by walking through lush forest paths. Make sure to also stop by the Woodville Trading Store to stock up on delicious treats for the road, and if you’re feeling adventurous, check out Black Horse Trails for a horseback riding experience.

Are You Ready to Hike in the Knysna Forest?

Hey there! Let’s talk about these amazing forests and the incredible adventures they hold. When it comes to exploring, you’ll find a bunch of awesome trails waiting for you in these lush forests. And guess what? You don’t have to look far to find them! Just head on over to the Goudveld Forest Station at Bibby’s Hoek in Rheenendal, and you’re good to go.

Now, let me tell you about three iconic walks that start from the Goudveld Forest Station. Each of these walks is around 3.5km long (there and back), so they’re perfect for a little adventure. First up, we have the Millwood Mine Walk. This trail will take you back in time as you explore the remains of an old village and mine tunnels. It’s pretty cool, but don’t forget to bring a torch!

If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, no worries! You can head over to Jubilee Creek’s picnic spot and river pool. This place is perfect for a relaxing day out in nature. And on your way to Millwood, check out the Drupkelders trail. It’ll lead you to a magical part of the Homtini River with big rock pools and a stunning waterfall. Trust me, it’s simply enchanting!

Now, before you start your adventure, make sure to grab a permit from the Goudveld Forest entrance boom at Bibby’s Hoek. It’s important to have everything in order, you know?

Now let’s talk about the cost: If you’re a South African citizen or resident with an ID, it’ll be R44 for adults and R22 for children. SADC nationals with a passport will pay R88 for adults and R44 for children. And for all you international visitors, the fee is R176 for adults and R88 for children. It’s good to know these things, right?

If you have any questions or need more information, you can contact us at 044 302 5600. We’re here to help!

Day 3: Knysna to Plett

By Jared Watney

Hey there, as you hit the road and leave town on Old Cape Road, something fascinating awaits you. Just follow along, and I’ll be your guide. We’re about to pass by the beautiful Simola Golf Estate and take a left turn towards the charming hamlet of Gouna. Now, this road we’re on is pretty special. It’s surrounded by lush indigenous forest, like a green fortress that’s hugging us from all sides.

Right before we reach San Ambroso Church, which was built back in 1891 for Italian immigrants, the road opens up a bit. These brave individuals traveled all the way to this remote corner of the Earth to start a silk-spinning industry. Sadly, their efforts didn’t quite go as planned, but boy, did they leave a mark. If you step inside the church’s small museum, you’ll get to learn all about the tenacious families who built a new home here.

As I travel along the lonely road known as Kom-se-Pad, it bends to the east and takes me through deep forests until I reach Diepwalle. The tranquility of the forest is overwhelming, making it seem like a perfect home for Knysna’s fabled elephants. It’s as if they live here undisturbed and hidden from the world. Whenever I wind down my window, stop the car, and turn off the engine, the silence is broken by the delightful symphony of over 280 bird species. The forest comes alive with their beautiful melodies. I can’t resist the temptation to step out of the car and take a leisurely walk on the clearly marked forest trails, stretching my legs and embracing the serenity.

Jared Watney

So here’s what you do: north on the R339 until you come across the road to Spitskop. Trust me, it’s worth it. When you reach the top, you’ll be treated to an incredible view of the entire coast, stretching from the Robberg Peninsula all the way to Mossel Bay. But if you’re not up for the rough ride to the summit, don’t worry. Just head over to the charming Dal van Varings, also known as the Valley of Ferns, nearby. It’s a great spot for a picnic and there’s a short walking trail where you can soak in the beauty of the surroundings.

Once you’re ready to continue your journey, keep heading up the R339 until you reach the intersection with the R340. This is the old Paardekop ox-wagon route, full of history and charm. As you make your way down the road through the Uplands, keep an eye out for the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve. It’s a great place to spot some wildlife and immerse yourself in nature.

And finally, after a wonderful adventure, you’ll arrive at your destination – Keurbooms near Plettenberg Bay. Take a deep breath and let the beauty of the place wash over you.

Now let’s talk about something truly magical – the Diepwalle Elephant Trails.

If you want to experience the enchantment of the Knysna forest, this is the place to be. The trails here will transport you to another world, where giant old yellowwoods tower above you, streams gurgle alongside you, and beautiful tree ferns create a lush, green canopy. And who knows, if you’re lucky, you might even catch sight of a Knysna loerie or a dwarf chameleon.

There are three trails to choose from, each with its own level of difficulty. The Black Route is the longest at nine kilometers, but it’s also the easiest. The White Route is a moderate 8 kilometers, while the Red Route, coming in at 7 kilometers, is classified as medium to difficult. All three trails start and end at the Diepwalle Forestry Station and take around three to four hours to complete.

If you’re feeling up to it, you can even combine the routes into one long hike, spanning a grand total of 18.2 kilometers. It’s definitely a challenge, but it’s worth it for the breathtaking views and the sense of accomplishment that comes with completing such a feat.

Before setting off on your adventure, make sure to get the necessary permits from the Diepwalle Forestry Station. And if you’re planning to stay overnight, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a campsite where you can pitch your tent on wooden decks amidst the trees. It’s the perfect way to fully immerse yourself in the splendor of the forest.

Now, let’s talk logistics. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Cost: The entrance fees are as follows: – South African citizens/residents with ID: R44 for adults, R22 for children – SADC nationals with passport: R88 for adults, R44 for children – International visitors: R176 for adults, R88 for children
  • Contact: If you have any further questions or need more information, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Diepwalle Forestry Station at 044 382 9762/3.

Embark on a Breathtaking Journey: Robberg Hiking Trails

The Robberg Peninsula, featuring ancient rock formations and significant Stone Age sites, is a treasured natural national monument. Beyond its historical and geological wonders, the peninsula offers an awe-inspiring landscape for hiking enthusiasts. Prepare to be captivated by the rugged coastline, panoramic ocean vistas, and diverse terrain. Along the three distinctive hiking trails – Gap Circuit (30 minutes), Witsand Circuit (2 hours), and Point Circuit (4 hours), you’ll encounter fascinating attractions such as ancient caves, a lighthouse, picnic/viewing decks, a shipwreck, rock pools, and the majestic Witsand dune. Wildlife abounds, including sea birds, seals, dolphins, and even the elusive blue duiker.

Before setting off on your adventure, it’s important to note that the hike can be quite challenging. Check the tide tables beforehand, as high tide can bring powerful waves and currents. Ensure that you carry sufficient water, as there are no sources along the way, and don suitable hiking shoes to navigate the changing terrain. Additionally, be prepared for sudden weather changes, which can add an element of excitement to your journey.

The Robberg hiking trails are open daily from 7am to 8pm, allowing you ample time to explore. Permits can be obtained by contacting 087 087 8250, Monday through Friday, between 8am and 5pm. Admission is priced at R60 for adults and R40 for children.

If you’re eager to embark on these memorable experiences, follow Robberg Road, accessible from the N2/Piesang Valley turn-off, to discover the captivating natural wonders of the Robberg Peninsula.
