Nestled among tall, dark trees, you’ll find a cluster of nine expertly-placed tents that make up &Beyond’s Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp. As a trailblazer in the travel and accommodation sector, &Beyond takes a well-rounded approach to its business. Established in 1991 and headquartered in South Africa, the company boasts a collection of 19 properties spread across South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania, Asia, and South America.
When I visited in early December, I was amazed by how the area, despite facing a severe drought, wasn’t barren and dry. Instead, it was filled with life and activity. The camp, which had no fences, was bustling with wildlife. I was in awe of the resident herd of elephants and the rarely-seen hippo who only left his watering hole occasionally. There was always something fascinating to see at this incredible camp.
As soon as I arrived, I was greeted warmly by the Nxabega team. Their smiles and voices created a joyful atmosphere. Walking towards the main deck area, I noticed a magnificent bird perched above me. It was the Verreaux’s eagle-owl, Africa’s largest owl, observing me with its piercing eyes.
When I look at the unmistakable pink eyelids of Africa’s largest owl, the Verreaux’s eagle-owl, I can’t help but feel a sense of wonder. It’s amazing how nature has created such beauty in the wild.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Nxabega, a stunning luxury camp nestled in a 25,000-hectare wildlife concession on the border of the Moremi Game Reserve. Let me tell you, it’s an experience like no other. Nxabega has truly perfected the art of blending comfort with nature.
What makes Nxabega even more remarkable is its commitment to sustainability. They understand the importance of preserving our natural surroundings, and it shows in everything they do. By harnessing the power of the African sun, Nxabega is able to generate 70% of its energy from solar power. It’s incredible to see how renewable energy can provide for our needs while minimizing our impact on the environment.
But Nxabega doesn’t stop there. They have also taken steps to reduce their use of plastic packaging. Instead of offering single-use plastic bottles, they provide guests with reusable glass bottles. It’s a small change, but it makes a big difference. By making this shift, Nxabega is helping to protect the delicate ecosystems that surround it.
Of course, sustainability is a journey, and Nxabega recognizes that there is always room for improvement. That’s why they have backup generators in case of emergency, ensuring that their guests are always comfortable and safe.
My time at Nxabega was truly unforgettable. I left with a renewed appreciation for the beauty of nature and a desire to do my part in preserving it. If you’re looking for a luxury getaway that also prioritizes sustainability, Nxabega is the perfect choice. You won’t be disappointed.
The deck area is a special spot at Nxabega where you can have breakfast, lunch, and high tea while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. It’s a lovely place to relax and indulge in delicious food.
The rooms at Nxabega are designed to perfectly capture the wildness and beauty of the Okavango Delta while also providing an elegant and sophisticated experience. The open-plan layout allows for a spacious and airy feel, with high ceilings that give a sense of grandeur. You’ll find yourself surrounded by luxury, from the extra-large king-sized bed with crisp white linen to the massive bathroom with double vanities. The enormous cupboards provide ample storage space for your belongings, and there’s even a bar area for you to enjoy a drink at your leisure.
But perhaps the most captivating feature of the rooms is the view. You’ll have a stunning vista of the Okavango Delta right from your room, allowing you to feel immersed in nature. And if that’s not enough, there’s also an outdoor shower where you can truly connect with the wilderness. Step out onto the spacious deck, take a seat on the swing chair, and let yourself be mesmerized by the beauty of this place.
When I woke up in the morning, I was greeted by the sight of the XL king-sized bed facing the beautiful deck area. I loved sleeping with the mesh doors of my tent only partially zipped, allowing the first light of dawn to gently wake me up. The view was breathtaking, and the whole experience was truly refreshing and rejuvenating.
There’s something incredible that happened while I was sitting on my front porch. I looked out from the bedroom, through the mesh deck doors, and saw an elephant right there. It was such an unforgettable sight! The view was absolutely amazing.
I had the pleasure of being guided by two incredible people, Gee and Ollie. They were so professional and friendly, and their knowledge of the bush was truly impressive. I learned so much from them, and they were able to answer every question I had. They really are the best teachers when it comes to learning about Botswana’s terrain and wildlife.
During our expedition, we spent about 15 minutes tracking a sub-adult leopard. And guess what? We found her! She was resting on a tree branch, and it was such a thrilling experience to see this magnificent and elusive creature up close. I will never forget that moment.
Afterwards, we enjoyed some drinks while overlooking a floodplain that was buzzing with life. It was incredible to see so many animals in their natural habitat. And then we headed back to camp for a delicious dinner. It was the perfect way to end the day.
Look at this amazing photo I came across! It captures a beautiful female leopard, basking in the warm glow of golden hour. I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder when I see such a stunning creature in its natural habitat.
When I first saw the hyena cub, it ran right up to our vehicle, full of curiosity. I couldn’t believe how fearless and inquisitive it was! Just picture this little cub, getting up close and personal with the tires of our car. It was an extraordinary moment!
The encounter with the hyena cub got me thinking about how amazing and diverse our planet really is. There are so many fascinating creatures out there, with their own unique behaviors and characteristics. It’s incredible to see how they interact with their environment and each other.
But it’s not just the hyena cub’s curiosity that caught my attention. This encounter made me realize how important it is for us to appreciate and protect these incredible animals. They play a vital role in our ecosystem, and we need to do everything we can to ensure their survival.
So, here’s what I want to tell you. We can all make a difference. By learning about these animals and their habitats, we can better understand their needs and work towards conservation efforts. Whether it’s supporting wildlife organizations, reducing our carbon footprint, or spreading awareness, our actions matter.
And let’s not forget the joy and wonder that animals bring to our lives. Just think about the happiness and excitement we feel when we see a cute little cub exploring its surroundings. It’s a reminder of the beauty and magic that nature has to offer.
So, my friend, let’s embrace our curiosity and explore the wonders of the natural world. Together, we can protect and appreciate all the incredible creatures that call this planet home.
As I returned to camp, I was warmly welcomed by the Nxabega team, who handed me a refreshing face towel to freshen up. We gathered in the boma area for dinner, where everyone enjoyed a captivating display of traditional singing and dancing. Nxabega’s culinary offerings are truly exceptional, and as a vegetarian, I found the menu to be particularly enticing. From the delectable sweetcorn soup to the mouthwatering vegetarian tacos and an assortment of crisp salads, every meal was a delight. And let’s not forget the unforgettable pineapple and lemongrass sorbet!
Before setting off on the morning game drive, a delightful breakfast is served, allowing you to witness the diurnal wildlife at the break of dawn. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a common genet on its way to sleep.
Lunch is served at approximately 1:30 pm, giving you plenty of time to take a nap after eating. You might be woken up by the elephants munching on the plants near your tent. Around 4:30 pm, we have a delightful high tea. We offer chocolate brownies, refreshing sliced watermelon, tasty ice coffee, bubbly champagne, and a variety of delicious snacks before heading out for the evening drive.
Hey there! I want to talk to you about the magic of pineapple and lemongrass sorbet.
Let me tell you, this sweet treat is a burst of flavors that will make your taste buds dance with delight. It’s like a tropical vacation in a bowl!
But why should you choose this sorbet over other flavors? Well, besides its delicious taste, pineapple and lemongrass sorbet has some incredible benefits that you might not be aware of.
The Power of Pineapple
First of all, let’s talk about pineapple. This fruit is packed with vitamins and antioxidants that are great for your health. It’s a rich source of vitamin C, which can boost your immune system and help prevent illnesses. Plus, pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that aids digestion and reduces inflammation in the body. So, enjoying a scoop of pineapple sorbet is not only tasty but also good for you!
The Zing of Lemongrass
Now, let’s explore the wonders of lemongrass. This herb is known for its refreshing citrus flavor and unique aroma. It has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help fight infections. Lemongrass is also rich in antioxidants, which can protect your cells from damage and boost your overall well-being. With its zingy and invigorating taste, adding lemongrass to your sorbet takes it to a whole new level!
A Match Made in Dessert Heaven
When pineapple and lemongrass come together in a sorbet, the result is pure magic. The sweet and tangy pineapple perfectly complements the zesty and aromatic lemongrass, creating a symphony of flavors that will make you smile with every spoonful.

During our morning game drive, I had the incredible opportunity to witness some of Botswana’s most fascinating wildlife. My guide, Gee, and his trusty companion Ollie skillfully led us to a magnificent male lion coalition, a majestic white rhino, and an awe-inspiring sight of 14 female lions with their playful cubs. As if that wasn’t enough, we also stumbled upon a buffalo kill, reminding me of the raw power and circle of life in nature.
The scorching sun bore down on us, intensifying with each passing moment. It felt like the African heat had enveloped our camp, coinciding perfectly with our return. The heat was relentless, and I could feel beads of sweat forming on my forehead. The moment I saw Nxabega’s pristine pool, I knew it was calling my name.
The crystal-clear water glistened invitingly, promising relief from the sweltering heat. But it was not just the coolness that drew me in; it was the mesmerizing view of the hippo’s watering hole that captured my attention. From the pool’s edge, I could watch these magnificent creatures bask in the water, finding solace in the shade and shelter it provided.
I couldn’t resist the temptation any longer. With a sense of utter contentment, I surrendered myself to the pool’s embrace. The refreshing water washed over me, soothing my sun-kissed skin and offering respite from the scorching African sun. As I floated, weightless and carefree, I couldn’t help but understand why the hippo rarely ventures far from its beloved watering hole during the daylight hours.
I had the opportunity to spend time with a group of male lions, specifically a coalition of two brothers. It was an incredible experience, made even more special by the fact that the Nxabega area was going through a drought. Despite the challenging conditions, the wildlife sightings were plentiful and the level of hospitality at the camp was exceptional. I can confidently say that this safari has become one of my all-time favorites.
What sets this experience apart is &Beyond’s commitment to three core values: caring for the animals, the people, and the land. These values play a crucial role in enhancing the overall appeal of the camp. By prioritizing the well-being of the wildlife, the guests, and the environment, &Beyond creates a truly remarkable and sustainable safari experience.
The Impact of &Beyond’s Values
When I talk about “care for the wildlife,” I’m referring to the animal welfare programs we run at &Beyond. One of the things we do is move rhinos from South Africa to Botswana. We joined forces with Great Plains and created Rhinos Without Borders. Our plan was to move 100 rhinos out of South Africa, and so far, we’ve moved 87. But because Botswana is facing a drought and the Delta is very dry, we’ve decided to pause our operations until the drought is over.
I’m hopeful that our operations will resume in 2020, as long as the situation improves. We are also actively involved in translocating leopards and cheetahs, and we have a program in place for breeding lions. These are just a few of the projects we’re working on to protect and preserve Africa’s endangered species.
When we talk about “care of the people,” we’re referring to our initiatives aimed at improving the lives of individuals. In addition, we’re implementing sustainable development interventions in the nearby communities of Maun. When we started this program, we conducted thorough investigations to identify where we could help and where interventions were needed.
When my team and I were searching for a place to establish a school, we found a community on the outskirts of Maun that was in desperate need. The problem was that the community was too far from the nearest school, and therefore was not benefiting from the government’s pre-primary initiatives. We knew we had to do something to help.
So, we conducted thorough analyses of the situation and brainstormed ways to provide sustainable support. After careful consideration, we decided to build a school within the community. However, we were determined to work with the community, not just for them. This was important to us because we wanted the community to take ownership of the project and feel a sense of pride and responsibility.
Our approach has always been to collaborate and empower. By involving the community in our efforts, we ensure that the projects we initiate continue to be cared for even after we have moved on. We want the community to feel that the school is truly theirs, not something imposed on them.
Phase one of the school is now complete, and we are excited to announce that it will be opening in the upcoming school year. We are confident that this school will make a positive impact on the community and provide children with the education they deserve.
Let’s talk about the lodges at Nxabega. They have a unique style that shows how much they care for the land. These lodges are built with the environment in mind. They don’t leave a big impact on the land because they are designed to have a small footprint.
When you take a look at the lodges, you’ll see that they are made from materials that are good for the environment. They use things like wood and thatch, which are biodegradable. This means that over time, these materials will break down and go back into the earth.
The lodges are also designed to let animals move freely underneath them. This is important because it allows the animals to continue using the land without any problems. It also helps the plants and trees to grow without any interference from the lodges.
If the camp at Nxabega ever needs to be taken down, it wouldn’t be a difficult process. The lodges are semi-permanent, which means they can be easily removed. And when they are gone, the land can start to restore itself. It can heal and become beautiful again, just like it was before the camp was there.
Here’s what you need to know:
If you’re planning a visit to this camp, you might be wondering when is the best time to go. Well, it all depends on what you prefer. In Botswana, the dry season happens during winter, from April to October. This is when the Delta floods, and it’s quite a sight to see. You might want to consider visiting in October if you’re a bird lover, as it’s a fantastic month for birding.
On the other hand, if you don’t mind a bit of rain, you might enjoy visiting during Botswana’s summer months, which are between November and March. It does get hot and humid during this time, but for some people, that’s part of the adventure. I personally loved visiting in early December because the scattered thundershowers made the bush even more exciting.
