Wolfgat
This cozy restaurant in the charming West Coast town of Paternoster was crowned the Best Restaurant in the World at The World Restaurant Awards in Paris in February 2019. Housed in a beautifully renovated fisherman’s cottage, Wolfgat is an intimate eatery with only 20 seats, creating a unique and personal dining experience. Here, you have the opportunity to witness firsthand the passion and dedication of the renowned chef and forager, Kobus van der Merwe.
While you can expect the food to be delicious, what truly sets Wolfgat apart is its innovative techniques, unwavering commitment to sustainable practices, and use of locally sourced ingredients. Many of these ingredients are actually foraged, adding an extra touch of authenticity to the dishes. It’s worth noting that the restaurant takes its name from the nearby Wolfgat cave, an archaeological treasure trove that provides a glimpse into the ancient cultures that once thrived in the area. Some even say that this cave holds secrets to underground passages.
According to Kobus, the rich history of early civilization along this coastline is a constant source of inspiration for him and his team. Wolfgat offers a truly extraordinary dining experience that seamlessly blends the past with the present, taking you on a culinary journey like no other.

Kalky’s
In the heart of Kalk Bay, you’ll discover Edwin and Liz Rosslind’s rustic restaurant by the quay. It’s a cozy cabin-like spot that offers some seriously delicious fish and chips – the best along this coastline, in fact. Running the show is their daughter, Allison, along with the manager, George. This place is always buzzing with customers, especially on weekends when people line up for a taste of the freshest catch in town. The menu is filled with tempting options, but the real stars are the battered hake and chips and the snoek and chips. However, you can’t go wrong with the calamari, kingklip, yellowtail, or prawns either – they’re all simply delightful. When your order is ready, a friendly waitress will call out your number and you can settle in at one of the tables covered in plastic. It’s a laid-back and affordable dining experience that the whole family can enjoy, and it’s beloved by the local community. The restaurant is open every day, from Monday to Sunday, starting at 10 am and closing at 7 pm. If you have any questions or want to make a reservation, you can reach them at 021 788 1726 or send an email to kalkys@mweb.co.za. You’ll find this gem at Kalk Bay Harbour, Main Road, in the beautiful city of Cape Town.
Den Anker is known as the most popular Belgian restaurant at the Waterfront. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s actually the most popular restaurant overall. And why not? The food is consistently amazing, the service is professional, the atmosphere is elegant, and the views are incredible. It’s been around for 26 years and it sits right on the quayside where seagulls fly, seals sunbathe, and boats sail by. The menu offers classic dishes like moules marinières, served with addictive shoestring fries and mayo. They also have a great selection of Belgian beers from small breweries in the Benelux country.
They are open Monday – Friday, 10am – 12am
Saturday + Sunday, 8.30am – 12am
You can contact them at 021 419 0249 or denanker@mweb.co.za
You can find them at Pierhead, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town

With their commitment to using only the freshest ingredients, their diverse menu, and their inviting atmosphere, you won’t be disappointed. So why wait? Head over to Snoekies today and experience the magic for yourself!
The Sea Point Promenade in Cape Town is like its own version of famous places like Las Ramblas in Barcelona or Central Park in New York. It’s a beautiful place where both locals and tourists can enjoy their city in a safe and enjoyable way. The views of the ocean on one side and Lion’s Head on the other make it even more special.
If you’re hungry, there are simple street-food options available from kiosks near the Sea Point Pavilion Swimming Pool. But for something truly delicious, I recommend making a quick trip to Snoekies on Main Road. This iconic Cape Town restaurant has been around for 70 years and originally served the toughest critics: fishermen. Grab yourself a steaming package of fish or calamari and chips and find a bench along the curve of the promenade. From there, you can enjoy your meal while watching the waves and people go by. And don’t forget, the seagulls are always there to keep you company!
Before you eat, why not work up an appetite by renting a bike and taking a ride along the promenade? Or if you prefer, you can go for a refreshing swim in the famous Sea Point pool, which is filled with fresh seawater.
Snoekies is open from Monday to Thursday, 11am to 8.30pm, and from Friday to Sunday, 11am to 9pm. If you have any questions or want to get in touch, you can contact them at 021 433 1709 or info@snoekies.co.za.
You’ll find Snoekies at 323 Main Road in Sea Point, Cape Town. It’s a must-visit spot for anyone looking to experience the true flavors and atmosphere of this incredible city.

Hey there, I want to tell you about an awesome experience you can have with foraging expert Roushanna Gray. She offers a series of courses where you can learn all about and explore the incredible ingredients that our oceans have to offer. The Veld and Sea course is a great place to start.
First, we head to the beach. Picture this: you’re standing on the sand, ready to dive into freshwater tidal pools and search for treasures like edible seaweed and mussels. It’s like a real-life treasure hunt!
Once we’ve collected our bounty, we make our way to the Veld and Sea classroom. Located at Cape Point, this is where the magic happens. Together, we’ll help prepare a beautiful outdoor lunch using the ingredients we found. Now, let me tell you about a restaurant that you absolutely have to try: Die Strandloper Restaurant.
The Luminous Kitchen
Hey there! Allow me to introduce you to Die Strandloper, an incredible spot on the West Coast where you can truly indulge in the ocean’s treasures, just like the locals do. For years, this place has been serving up authentic West Coast cuisine and warm hospitality. The ingredients? Freshly caught fish, supplied by local fishermen. And the cooking method? Traditional family recipes, prepared on open fires and in stone ovens. It’s a dining experience that’s as rustic as it gets, with the restaurant resembling a shipwreck camp right on the shoreline.
So, what can you expect at Die Strandloper? Well, it all begins with mussels. Oh, and don’t bother asking for cutlery because they have a unique approach – they use the mussel shells as utensils for the rest of the meal. Clever, right? As you savor those delicious mussels, get ready for other mouthwatering dishes like mullet, snoek, fish curry, linefish, and lobster. Oh, and did I mention it’s a 10-course feast? Bring your appetite and leave your shoes at home, because it’s going to be a memorable experience you won’t want to miss.
In between courses, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to relax and have fun. Take a break at the beach bar, go beachcombing, or take a refreshing swim in the sea. Just make sure you plan ahead and book your spot well in advance – this place is popular for a reason!
Opening times: Wednesday – Sunday, 12pm – 4pm; 6pm – 10pm
