Multi-day hikes

1. The majestic Drakensberg

The South African hiking bucketlist

The mountain range is a fascinating and enigmatic place. It is home to hidden rivers and ancient landmarks that spark curiosity. When I look at photos of Teagan Cunniffe, I’m captivated by the sense of wonder it evokes.

If you’re a hiker, this mountain range is a must-visit destination. Trust me, I’m not the only one who thinks so. In fact, I asked five experts who have spent a lot of time there, and they all agree. They have some fantastic routes that I want to share with you.

2. The Tankwa Camino

The South African hiking bucketlist

Hey there! Let me tell you about one of our amazing contributors, Melanie. She always has a cheerful smile on her face, although sometimes, she doesn’t really feel that way.

I want to share with you an incredible journey called the Tankwa Camino. Now, this adventure is not for the faint of heart. Imagine walking 256.6 kilometers from Calvinia to Ceres, right through the rugged Karoo. Trust me, it’s no walk in the park! Even for someone as tough as Melanie, it was the most challenging thing she had ever done.

Are you wondering why she put herself through it? Well, keep reading, and you’ll find out!

3. The Otter Trail

The South African hiking bucketlist

Hey there! Have you ever seen a stormy sea? It’s quite a sight! Just take a look at this amazing photo taken from the Oakhurst hut boma. Chris Davies captured the moment perfectly.

Now, let’s talk about a trail that’s legendary in South Africa. You’ve probably heard of it – the Otter Trail. It’s one of the most famous hikes in the country. This trail will take you through stunning coastal forests, across rivers, and to breathtaking viewpoints along the garden route. It’s truly an unforgettable experience.

But here’s the thing – booking a spot on the Otter Trail isn’t easy. You have to plan far in advance. In fact, bookings open a whole year ahead of time. And guess what? They sell out fast, especially for dates when river crossings are optimal.

Next year, this incredible trail will turn 50! Can you believe it? To celebrate, we decided to send one of our team members who had never done the Otter Trail before. And then, we convinced her to interview some people who have experienced the trail in different ways. Their stories are fascinating!

4. The Leopard Trail

The South African hiking bucketlist

I want to tell you about my favorite camping site, which was on the third night of my trip. It was truly amazing and the highlight of my adventure. I just had to share this incredible scene that I discovered there, and I think you’ll love it too!

5. Fish River Canyon

The South African hiking bucketlist

When it comes to hiking the Fish River Canyon, you need to be ready. This challenging 90km trail is known for its beauty, but it’s not for the faint of heart. If you’re up for the adventure, here are six important things to consider.

1. Get in Shape

Before you tackle the Fish River Canyon hike, it’s important to prepare your body. This trail is tough, with steep climbs and uneven terrain. Start a fitness routine that includes cardio and strength training to build up your endurance.

2. Pack Smart

Choosing the right gear is essential for a successful hike. Make sure you have a sturdy backpack, comfortable hiking boots, and lightweight clothing. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, a first aid kit, and plenty of water.

3. Check the Weather

The weather in the Fish River Canyon can be unpredictable. Before you go, check the forecast and be prepared for anything. Pack layers so you can adjust your clothing as needed.

4. Plan Your Meals

Food is fuel, so make sure you have enough to keep you going. Plan your meals ahead of time and pack lightweight, high-energy snacks. Don’t forget to bring a stove or cooking utensils if you plan on cooking along the trail.

5. Respect the Environment

The Fish River Canyon is a beautiful and fragile ecosystem. Respect the environment by following Leave No Trace principles. Pack out all of your trash, stay on designated trails, and be mindful of wildlife.

6. Enjoy the Journey

While the Fish River Canyon hike is challenging, it’s also an incredible experience. Take the time to appreciate the beauty around you and enjoy the journey. And remember, it’s okay to take breaks and pace yourself.

The South African hiking bucketlist

When I embarked on this hike near the city, I was pleasantly surprised to find that we hardly encountered any other hikers. It felt as if the mountain was ours alone to explore, and the sense of solitude was invigorating. Just take a look at this photo by Matthew Sterne – it perfectly captures the tranquility and beauty of the trail.

If you don’t have the time or money to go on a guided multi-day hike, don’t worry. Table Mountain offers some incredible overnight trails that you can tackle on your own. The experience is just as fulfilling, and you’ll have the freedom to set your own pace.

The South African hiking bucketlist

Let’s start our hike with a leisurely walk along the shoreline. We’ll then explore the enchanting coastal forest. You’ll be captivated by the breathtaking scenery as we make our way through.

If you’re unable to secure a reservation for the incredibly popular Otter Trail, don’t worry. There are plenty of other options available in the area that will provide you with a stunning alternative. One such option is The Waterfall Trail, which allows you to experience the first part of the renowned Otter Trail before bringing you back to where you started.

8. Walking trails in Kruger

The South African hiking bucketlist

During this adventure, I had the chance to stay at our cozy A-frame homes for three nights. Each A-frame can comfortably accommodate two people, and we have a total of four available. If you don’t fill up the entire walk with eight people, you might have the opportunity to bunk with some new and interesting companions.

And let me assure you, safety is always a top priority. Throughout the hike, you’ll be accompanied by two experienced rangers who carry rifles. Their expertise and preparedness will provide peace of mind as you venture into this magnificent wilderness.

9. Green Mountain Trail

The South African hiking bucketlist

I had the incredible opportunity to explore the Green Mountain Trail in the Overberg, and I must say, it was an absolute dream. This luxury slack-packing adventure captured the essence of two of my favorite things: breathtaking mountains and indulging in the flavors of wine. Embarking on this multi-day hike was an experience that will stay with me forever.

A Unique Hiking Journey through Limpopo and Mpumalanga

The South African hiking bucketlist

When I look out at the towering granite peak of Thabaphaswa from The Lookout, I can’t help but be filled with awe. The beauty of nature is truly remarkable.

Now, I know there are plenty of other hikes out there, but let me tell you about one that is truly special. This self-drive route is like no other, and it will take you on a journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

11. Rim of Africa

The South African hiking bucketlist

The Rim of Africa is an incredible hiking trail that spans the Cederberg and Outeniqua mountains, making it one of the longest hikes in Africa. This trail is so amazing that it definitely deserves a spot on your bucket list. The complete thru-hike is an epic journey that covers almost 650 kilometers and takes about three months to finish. However, don’t worry if you can’t commit that much time, because you can also tackle it in smaller sections. These sections range from 60 to 100 kilometers each, making it more manageable for most people.

12. Addo National Park

The South African hiking bucketlist

Did you know that there are no guided trails in the Addo Main Game Area? That’s because the bush is so thick that it’s not safe to walk around. The Big Five could be hiding behind any thicket! But don’t worry, there are other sections in Addo where you can safely explore.

There are actually two places in Addo where you can go hiking. The first is in the Zuurberg Section, where you’ll find jaw-dropping day trails on the slopes of the fynbos-covered mountains. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking! The second option is a two-day trail in the Woody Cape Section along the coast. This trail is a bit more challenging, so make sure you’re fit and strong if you decide to take it on.

13. Genadendal Trail

The South African hiking bucketlist

The Genadendal Trail:

I recently went on a challenging two-day hike called The Genadendal Trail. Let me tell you, it was tough! The trail doesn’t have much shade, but what it lacks in shade, it makes up for with its breathtaking views and refreshing swimming holes.

Day hikes:

If you’re looking for a shorter hike, there are plenty of day hikes to choose from. One of my favorites is the three peaks hike on Table Mountain.

14. Table Mountain’s three peaks:

The South African hiking bucketlist

Think you’ve got what it takes? This challenging hike will test your limits. The journey begins at Devil’s Peak and takes you along the saddle up to Maclear’s Beacon. From there, you’ll face the heart-pounding descent of Kloof Corner to Lion’s Peak. As Chris Davies puts it, “This isn’t a hike for the faint-hearted. But if you’re reasonably fit, not afraid of heights, and can find a seasoned hiker to guide you through the tricky parts, then you won’t find a more thrilling and fulfilling way to experience Table Mountain.”

15. Hiking the Hennops Trail

The South African hiking bucketlist

As I stand on the wobbly suspension bridge, I am amazed by the way it crosses over the Hennops River. The view is breathtaking and I can’t help but snap a photo to capture this moment.

Just a short 40-minute drive from Joburg, you will discover a world of nature’s wonders. The lush streams, rolling hills, and picturesque views are truly mesmerizing. Whether you are an experienced hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, there are a variety of trails to choose from. And don’t worry, there’s even a shorter trail that is perfect for kids to enjoy.

But the beauty of this place doesn’t end with its scenic trails. After a tiring hike, you can cool off in the swimming pool and relax in its refreshing waters. It’s the perfect way to end a day of adventure and exploration.

So why wait? Gather your friends, mark your calendars, and put on your hiking shoes. There’s an unforgettable experience waiting for you at Lion’s Head.

16. Hiking Lion’s Head

The South African hiking bucketlist

Have you ever watched a beautiful sunset over Camps Bay in Cape Town? I have, and let me tell you, it’s an experience like no other.

But you know what? Watching the sunset from Lion’s Head is even better. I challenge you to find a more majestic view.

17. Explore the great outdoors in Clarens

The South African hiking bucketlist

If you take a look at the picture above, you’ll understand why they call this route the ‘Mushroom Hike.’ It’s quite fascinating to see!

When you visit St Fort Country House in Clarens, you’ll find four different trails to explore. These tracks take you up the sandstone hills surrounding the charming country house, and each one offers a different level of difficulty. So, no matter your fitness level, there’s a trail that’s perfect for you!

One of the trails, known as the ‘Mushroom Hike,’ is a delightful short walk. Along the way, you’ll pass mielie fields and walk alongside a river lined with willow trees. After that, you’ll make your way up gravel paths and even climb a ladder until you reach the distinctive mushroom-shaped rock shown in the photo.
