Hey there! Have you heard about poké? It’s this awesome food trend all the way from Hawaii that has become super popular and healthy here in our city. You can find these delicious bowls of raw goodness popping up everywhere faster than you can say “ahi tuna”!
Now, let me tell you about the absolute best poké spot in town – The Poké Co. on Loop Street. This place is run by a talented guy named Andrew Flanagan, who is no stranger to seafood. In fact, his dad is a commercial exporter of yummy southcoast rock lobster and other tasty sea treats.
Andrew, who is 31 years old, had a dream to create a vibrant and refreshing store all about seafood here in Cape Town. Growing up in a family that loved fish and seafood, he was always inspired by these flavors. He vividly remembers his dad’s trip to Japan in the early 90s, and how he came back with stories of eating raw fish!
After finishing my degree in business science at UCT, I decided to embark on an exciting adventure working on superyachts in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. It was an unforgettable experience, but after seven years, I felt the need to return to my roots in Cape Town.
It was during a trip to Bali with my girlfriend that we discovered our love for poké. The flavors and uniqueness of this dish sparked an idea in my mind: why not bring a specialized poké bar to Cape Town? I firmly believed that Cape Town was missing out on the amazing seafood scene that poké has to offer. I even considered opening a lobster concept store due to my dad’s connections, but the high costs made it unfeasible.
Now, you may be wondering, what exactly is poké?
Poké is a traditional Hawaiian dish that consists of fresh, diced seafood, usually marinated in soy sauce and sesame oil. It’s a delightful combination of flavors and textures that will tickle your taste buds. The best part is that you can customize your poké bowl with a variety of toppings and sauces to suit your preferences. Whether you’re a fan of salmon, tuna, or tofu, there’s a poké bowl for everyone.
So, if you’re searching for a new and exciting culinary experience in Cape Town, look no further than our specialized poké bar. We’re here to satisfy your seafood cravings and introduce you to the incredible world of poké. Come and join us for a bowl of freshness and flavor that will transport you straight to the beautiful shores of Hawaii.
So, there’s this dish called poké. Have you heard of it? It’s a Hawaiian creation that’s like a deconstructed sushi salad. The main ingredients are diced ahi tuna, sushi rice, avocado, carrot, seaweed, cucumber, and spring onion. But, depending on the season and what’s available, you might find some variations in the salad and seafood ingredients.
Now, poké is a different kind of sushi experience. It’s all about those amazing sushi flavors, but in a more fun and relaxed way. Imagine enjoying the deliciousness of sushi, but without all the fuss and symmetrical presentation. That’s exactly what poké offers. If you’re a sushi lover, but craving something cozy and less formal, you’ll absolutely adore poké.
Diving into the Bowls of Deliciousness
When you look at them on the menu, the ingredients might seem like they were chosen at random, but there’s actually a lot of thought put into these bowls of deliciousness. Andrew tells us: “I spent months researching, experimenting, and fine-tuning the recipes. I even worked with consulting chef Didi van der Wyver to perfect our secret sauces and kitchen processes.”
One of my favorites was The Windward. It’s a colorful combination of tuna, cucumber, edamame, avocado, and pickled ginger. All of these ingredients are carefully arranged on top of a bed of shredded nuri. And let me tell you, the heavenly Hawaiian-heat and creamy wasabi dressing brings everything together perfectly. Each bite is a burst of fresh and raw flavors. It was absolutely amazing!
The Charlie Tuna is a real crowd-pleaser. It’s both comforting and zesty, combining delicious flavors that will leave you wanting more. The house shoyu tuna is paired with mango, cucumber, carrot, sweet red onion, and toasted Macadamias. All of this goodness sits on a bed of sticky sushi rice, topped with the house shoyu and creamy togarashi dressing.
But what if you’re not a fan of raw tuna? Don’t worry, there are plenty of other options for you. You can choose from tofu, prawn, chicken (cooked, of course), and salmon. You can either build your own bowl, customizing it to your liking, or you can go for one of Andrew’s expertly crafted combinations. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, why not try the poke burrito?
Cereal lovers, rejoice!
The Poke Co. has recently ventured into new territory with their breakfast bowl menu. Sian Kaplan, the former head chef of Jarryds, has developed a range of delicious options to start your day off right. How about starting your morning with a bowl of Apple Crumble Oats? Or perhaps you’d prefer the Honey-Glazed Banana Quinoa Porridge? If you’re looking for something a little different, the Miso Caramel Chia Pot and the Strawberries & Cream Chia Pudding are sure to hit the spot. These breakfast bowls are fit for champions!
