Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg and part of Greater Swellendam, which includes Suurbraak, Barrydale, Buffeljagsrivier, and Malgas, Swellendam has a unique appeal. Not to mention, being the gateway to the epic Route 62 makes it the perfect starting point for further exploration. And the best part? It’s only 220 km away from Cape Town, making it an easy and enjoyable road trip.
A Rich Historical Legacy
Swellendam, oh what a place! It’s like stepping back in time, surrounded by fascinating historical landmarks and heritage sites. And right in the heart of it all stands the magnificent Dutch Reformed Church, proudly displaying a mix of architectural styles from Gothic to Dutch to Baroque and Eastern influences. Can you believe it was built way back in 1911?
Believe it or not, this church is considered the most popular one to snap pictures of in all of South Africa.
But wait, there’s more! You’ll discover a plethora of fascinating buildings that have been transformed into charming shops, art galleries, and eateries. One of the oldest structures in the area is the Drostdy on Swellengrebel Street. It’s a captivating complex that includes the Museum, the Gaol, Ambagswerf, Mayville house, and Mayville Garden.
Where to Eat and Drink
Once you’re done exploring historic homes and holy places, treat yourself to a meal at one of the many fantastic restaurants on the heritage strip. If you’re looking for a sophisticated dining experience, make a reservation at Field and Fork. It’s situated inside a section of the Drostdy Museum and is owned by Swellendam’s Mayor, Francois du Rand. For a more laid-back atmosphere, head to The Republic across the street. You can enjoy pub grub and sample local craft beer and gin while people-watching.
Hey there, want to try Swellenbrew? It’s an amazing coffee spot along the drag. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
But wait, there’s more! Have you heard about Grace + Merci? It’s another cool spot with a menu that focuses on fresh and innovative dishes. Starting your day here with a delicious flat white is a fantastic idea!

Explore the beauty of nature
When it comes to enjoying the outdoors, the Langeberg foothills are a paradise. Here, you can find a variety of trails for walking, running, and even horseback riding. If you prefer biking, inside the Marloth Nature Reserve, you’ll discover well-maintained bike routes. And if you’re up for a real adventure, you can embark on a two to seven-day hike, with cozy rest huts available for overnight stays along the way.
Let’s take a journey through Marloth Nature Reserve together.
There’s a trail called Wamakersbos that’s perfect for a day hike. People of all ages can enjoy it, so it doesn’t matter how old you are. But if you’re an experienced hiker and you’re looking for something more challenging, then the Swellendam Hiking Trail is the way to go. It’s considered one of the best hikes in South Africa, so you know it’s gonna be good.
The Langenberg calls my name.
If you prefer a more leisurely stroll with a knowledgeable guide by your side, you can join a guided tour with Jon Pimm. He adores sharing the beauty of nature with fellow outdoor enthusiasts. Spending time in this magnificent sanctuary, which is also part of the Cape Floristic Region, is like a healing balm for the soul.
Beautiful Gardens and Farms
Swelldendam residents have a deep love for gardening, and it has become a national pastime. Every year, the town hosts a garden expo to showcase the incredible work of the talented gardeners in the community. People from near and far come to support this event and satisfy their floral cravings. Not to mention, it’s all for a good cause – the Swellendam SPCA. You can find them at 52 Voortrek Street.
One of the gardens open to the public year-round is October’s Haven, located across the Rothman Street bridge. This beautiful garden was created by Rina and John October.
Welcome to Lovely October’s Haven!
I’m thrilled to tell you about this amazing place. This couple, despite having limited resources, has managed to transform what was once a barren plot into a stunning oasis filled with succulents and perennials. They’ve even created a scenic riverside meander and a lovely picnic area. It’s truly a sight to behold!
If you’re looking for a fun activity for the whole family, I highly recommend taking a drive to Wildebraam Farm in the nearby Hermitage Valley. They offer berry-picking experiences from November to January, and you can also check out their wide range of delicious jams, syrups, chutneys, and liqueurs.
But wait, there’s more!
The Overberg region is famous for its exceptional wines, and wine enthusiasts will be in paradise here. There are many fantastic wineries to explore, but one that stands out is Olivedale Private Vineyards. This winery is dedicated to sustainability and produces top-notch wines in the most natural way possible.
Hey there! I’m Carl van Wijck, and I want to tell you about the incredible wine tastings I host at Olivedale. When you come visit, I personally guide you through the tastings, making sure it’s an unforgettable experience. Just give me a call to book an appointment.
Imagine stepping into our cellar, which we’ve transformed into a vintage man cave. It’s a unique setting that adds to the charm of the tastings. You won’t find anything like it anywhere else!
Now, let me share another hidden gem with you. Have you heard of Sijnn Wines in Malgas? It’s a little off the beaten path, and you have to take a dirt road to get there. But trust me, it’s worth the journey.
This estate is a true hidden treasure, situated in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a beautiful renosterveld conservation area. The peacefulness and serenity of the location make it the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine.
So, whether it’s the refined tastings at Olivedale or the rustic charm of Sijnn Wines, I invite you to explore these amazing experiences. Give me a call and let’s make your wine journey unforgettable.
The breathtaking vista from Sijnn Wines never fails to impress. I own this beautiful winery alongside the incredibly talented Charla Bosman, who spearheads our winemaking efforts. At Sijnn, we are firm believers in the power of natural farming and winemaking. We strive to cultivate our grapes using sustainable methods that work in harmony with nature. We are also committed to producing wines that are as natural as possible, allowing the true essence of the grapes to shine through.
You might find it interesting to know that we have a unique feature at Sijnn Wines. We have a motorized pontoon that operates on the Breede River. This innovative ferry service is completely free and provides a convenient way for visitors to cross the river. It’s a wonderful alternative to taking a long, 90-kilometer detour.
Now, let’s talk about something fascinating that you might encounter in Swellendam – the Knysna dwarf chameleons. These small chameleons are native to South Africa and are a common sight in the area. You’ll be amazed at how abundant they are in this region.
At Sijnn Wines, we believe in the magic of nature and strive to create wines that embody the essence of the land. Join us on this journey and experience the wonder of our natural winemaking philosophy.
The Knysna dwarf chameleon is in danger of disappearing according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Some chameleons leave their natural forest homes and find themselves in dangerous urban environments where they face threats from predators, cars, and even garden tools. Thankfully, in Swellendam, there is a chameleon hero named Carmen Stuart who seeks guidance from experienced chameleon protector Aldo Kleyn. Carmen, along with a local veterinarian, has taken it upon herself to care for, rehabilitate, and release these small reptiles back into their natural habitat.
