Discover the Hidden Gems
When I think of the Boland, I think of sprawling vineyards, breathtaking mountain ranges, and charming small towns that make you feel like you’ve been transported to a different time. There’s something special about this region that keeps drawing me back.
One hidden gem that you simply can’t miss is Stellenbosch. This historic town is not only a wine lover’s paradise but also a treasure trove of Cape Dutch architecture. Take a stroll down Dorp Street and soak in the rich history that permeates every corner.
If you’re looking for a touch of adventure, head to the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. Lace up your hiking boots and explore the hiking trails that wind through fynbos-covered mountains. The view from the top is simply breathtaking.
Delve into the Wine Culture
Now, let’s talk about the real reason why the Boland is so famous – the wine. With its Mediterranean climate and fertile soils, this region is a winemaker’s dream come true. There are endless vineyards to explore, each with its own unique character and flavors.
When it comes to wine tasting, you can’t go wrong with the Simonsberg-Paarl wine route. This route is home to some of South Africa’s most prestigious wine estates. Taste your way through a variety of award-winning wines and learn about the winemaking process from passionate experts.
Embrace the Culture and History
The Boland is not just about wine and natural beauty; it’s also a region rich in culture and history. Take a trip to Franschhoek, known as the “Food and Wine Capital” of South Africa. This quaint town is full of world-class restaurants where you can indulge in gourmet meals paired with the finest local wines.
If you’re a history buff, make sure to visit the Solms-Delta Wine Estate. This estate is not only known for its excellent wine but also for its commitment to telling the stories of the people who have shaped this region throughout history. It’s an eye-opening experience that will deepen your appreciation for the Boland.
Escape to the Wild Side
When you’ve had your fill of wine and history, it’s time to venture beyond the Boland and explore the wild side of South Africa. Just a short drive away, you’ll find the West Coast National Park. This coastal gem is home to an abundance of birdlife, pristine beaches, and breathtaking landscapes.
While you’re there, don’t miss the chance to witness the incredible flower season. From late July to September, the park transforms into a floral wonderland, with carpets of colorful wildflowers stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s a sight you’ll never forget.

As I venture beyond the charming Stellenbosch Winelands, I discover the captivating beauty of Paarl, the Breede River Valley, the Swartland, and eventually the Cederberg. Each of these places entices me with their scenic splendor, offering a slower pace of life that is truly worth experiencing.
In the heart of the Cederberg, Cederberg Wines takes great care in protecting and preserving its 5200 hectares of pristine nature. They are dedicated to the conservation of this breathtaking landscape. Likewise, Burgherspost and Cloof, located in Darling, are committed to preserving nature by sharing a nature reserve. Cloof even goes a step further by hosting Africa’s only eco-friendly music festival, Rocking the Daisies, in October. Vondeling is another great destination that has undertaken a long-running project to safeguard and nurture the rare fynbos species that call their land home.
Now, let me share some recommendations for your exploration of the Boland and beyond. These places are waiting to be discovered.

But wait, there’s more! Johan suggests a lovely hiking trail for the whole family at Waverley Hills. Anyone can do it, I promise! It’s just a 45-minute walk up the valley, surrounded by beautiful fynbos and wildlife. It’s the perfect way to spend some quality time with your loved ones. 6. Eat here
When it comes to pizza night in Waverley Hills, there are a few great options to choose from. One standout recommendation is Bosman’s at the Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl. I can’t rave enough about the incredible views and the perfect setting for enjoying a sundowner. The fine-dining cuisine is simply brilliant, and the service is top-notch. Plus, they have an impressive wine list that will surely delight any connoisseur.
If you’re looking for a more laid-back and family-friendly atmosphere, Under Oaks is the place to be. Located just off the Noord Agter-Paarl Road, this restaurant not only offers excellent pizza but also boasts stunning views. It’s the ideal spot for a relaxed meal with loved ones.
But if you’re craving pizza specifically on a Wednesday night, you can’t go wrong with the Waverley Hills Restaurant. While they excel at all their dishes, their commitment to using fresh, in-season, and organic produce sets them apart. It’s a restaurant that truly cares about the quality of their ingredients, and it shows in every bite.
The Tulbagh Hotel (tel 0232300071) is amazing because you get delicious food in big portions. Johan says the lamb curry, linefish, and steak are really great. The Cloof Kitchen (tel 0224922839) is also worth checking out because Chef Nokkie makes amazing food at really good prices. Lester recommends trying the Trailblazer beef burger there.
If you’re heading to Cederberg Wines, David suggests checking out three places that offer food and picnic spots along the way. These places are Oasis Backpackers (tel 0274822819), Krom Rivier Farm (tel 0274822807), and Mount Ceder Resort (tel 0233170848). These places are tucked away in the mountains, so it’s a good idea to let them know you’re coming.
And hey, here’s a tip! Keep an eye out for some hidden gems in the area. There are always new and exciting places to discover.
According to David, Waverley Hills is busy planting new and lesser-known grapes, ‘which is really exciting. Some of the cultivars have never been planted before in South Africa.’ At Vondeling’s neighboring farm, Ayama, you can taste the very first South African Vermentino, an Italian grape. Tel 0218698313. Cederberg Wines is expanding its offering. The Cederberg Brewery will make three beers – a lager, a blonde ale and IPA.
