Vadivelu
“Indian. With Attitude” is our motto, and it perfectly captures the atmosphere of our vibrant and inviting new restaurant on Kloof Street. We’ve taken over the space that was once Manna Epicure and transformed it into a modern Indian haven. Our walls are adorned with shades of sage and terracotta, and our jungle-themed wallpaper features majestic tigers and tropical birds. The banquettes are a delightful pastel pistachio, and the tables and chairs are crafted from beautiful pale wood. We’ve even partnered with the talented Mervyn Gers to provide stunning tableware.
As for our cuisine, Chef Jai honed his skills in Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state of India. His expertise shines through in our delicious selection of street food snacks, such as the potato masala dosa served with coconut chutney and aubergine curry dip. Our menu is filled with authentic Southern Indian dishes and a couple of Durban curries. Whether you’re craving a divine prawn coconut curry, aloo gobi, or lamb tikka masala, we have something to satisfy your taste buds. And don’t forget to try our crispy parathas, perfect for mopping up all those mouthwatering flavors. We’ve carefully curated a short but impressive wine list that complements our spices, with plenty of options available by the glass.
When you visit Vadivelu, you’ll experience true hospitality and generosity. Our portions are so generous that you might even have leftovers to take home. Even on a Tuesday night, our restaurant is already buzzing with activity. We’ve put together an excellent selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
We opened our doors in June 2023, and our opening times are from Monday to Saturday, from 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to 10pm. Bang K: A Breath of Freshness on York Road
When I was searching for the perfect spot to open my modern Thai restaurant, I stumbled upon York Road in Muizenberg. This charming street, adorned with historic buildings and fluttering flags, immediately captured my attention. It lures you in, beckoning you to explore its culinary offerings. And in the midst of it all, Bang K stands out.
What sets Bang K apart is not only its fresh and innovative cuisine, but also its captivating ambiance. Stepping into the restaurant, you’re greeted with an understated glamour that hints at the extraordinary experience awaiting you. It’s simple yet elegant, creating a sense of anticipation and excitement.
At Bang K, I’ve taken inspiration from the traditional flavors of Thai cuisine, infusing them with my unique style and a small-plate approach. Lemongrass, tamarind, coconut, green chili, galangal, ginger, and lime are the heroes of our dishes. However, don’t expect the typical noodle soups and broths. Our focus is on crafting tantalizing taste combinations, with an emphasis on sour and zesty rather than fiery heat, all using the freshest ingredients available.
Our menu is a carefully curated selection of beautifully plated dishes, each resembling a delightful present delivered to your table. Divided into four categories – Thale (Sea), Thidin (Land), Lok (Earth), and Hwan (Sweet) – our offerings cater to a variety of preferences and cravings.
Since our opening in October 2023, our doors have been open to welcome you on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5pm to 10pm, and from Thursday to Sunday, from 12pm to 10pm. Feel free to reach out to us at 082 373 5045 for any inquiries or reservations. You can find us at 2 York Road, Muizenberg, Cape Town.
Welcome to Club Kloof!
Imagine stepping into a vibrant space that ignites your senses. Cardinal-crimson walls envelop the room, while burnt-orange banquettes invite you to take a seat. As you make your way further, you’ll discover a lemon-yellow Amalfi-esque bar nestled in the back courtyard. At Club Kloof, bold colors are our signature, setting the stage for a unique dining experience unlike any other.
I’m Chef Shayne Shutte, and together with Michael Carter, we are the creative minds behind Club Kloof. You may already know us as the faces behind the popular Kloof Street favorite, Our Local. Here at Club Kloof, we like to describe our cuisine as “Italian-ish.” We focus on simple yet exceptional ingredients, presented in a small-plate-sharing format that celebrates the joy of communal dining.
Inspired by the traditional Roman pizza, in teglio, our pizza of the day is available by the slice. Each bite transports you to the bustling streets of Rome, where pizza is an art form. If you’re in the mood for something more personal, our mini pizzette offers the perfect bite-sized treat. Topped with carefully selected ingredients, these puffy pizzas are simply delightful.
Of course, a meal at Club Kloof wouldn’t be complete without our range of fresh salads. I highly recommend trying our tomato and nectarine salad, topped with creamy goat’s cheese. It’s a flavor combination that will leave you craving more. If you prefer something heartier, our grilled prawns on skewers, tender beef fillet, and crispy fries are sure to satisfy. And let’s not forget about the drinks! Our expert mixologists are ready to craft the perfect cocktail to elevate your dining experience.
But the food doesn’t stop there. In the morning, join us on our street-facing verandah for a cup of coffee and indulge in a selection of pastries and sweet treats. Using our special sourdough starter, I create a range of delectable baked goods that are sure to start your day off right.
Club Kloof opened its doors on March 25th, 2023 and we can’t wait to welcome you. We’re open Tuesday to Sunday, from 8am till late, ensuring there’s always a time to savor the irresistible flavors of our “Italian-ish” cuisine. Got any questions or want to make a reservation? Give us a call at 072 415 3752 or email us at contact@clubkloof.com. You can find us at 84 Kloof Street, Cape Town.

Discover Galjoen
I’m excited to share some great news with you! The amazing team that brought you the popular restaurant, Belly of the Beast, has opened up a new seafood joint on Harrington Street. They’re called Galjoen, and they’re all about serving up delicious dishes made with sustainably sourced seafood.
Neil Swart and Anouchka Horn, the owners of Galjoen, are sticking to the winning formula they used at Belly of the Beast: a fixed tasting menu, limited seating, and reservations only. And, of course, they’re using the best local ingredients. It’s all about creating a truly special dining experience.
Now, you might be wondering about the name Galjoen. Well, it’s actually the name of South Africa’s national fish. This tough and adaptable fish can handle the rough seas, and that really resonated with Neil and Anouchka. They wanted a name that represented their restaurant’s spirit.
When you step into Galjoen, you’ll notice the semi-industrial atmosphere. It’s designed to give you a sense of being at a harbor, with a touch of that nostalgic 80s seafood restaurant vibe. It’s a unique and inviting space where you can enjoy fantastic seafood dishes.
Galjoen officially opened its doors on June 16th, 2023. So, if you’re in Cape Town, you definitely need to check it out. You can find Galjoen at 99 Harrington Street. Make sure to make a reservation, as this place is sure to be popular!
So, if you’re a seafood lover like me, you’re in for a treat at Galjoen. They’ve taken the best of Belly of the Beast and brought it to a new level with their sustainable seafood dishes. Don’t miss out on this incredible dining experience!
Cowfish
What is a cowfish?
A cowfish is an extraordinary creature that inhabits the ocean. It belongs to the family of boxfish and pufferfish. Cowfish are known for their unique appearance, which is a combination of both a fish and a cow. This fascinating hybrid has a boxy body with a triangular shape. Its distinctive feature is a pair of horns on its head, resembling those of a cow. These horns are not only for show, but they also serve a practical purpose – they help the cowfish defend itself from predators.
Why are cowfish unique?
Being a cowfish is no ordinary thing. I mean, imagine swimming around with the body of a boxfish and the horns of a cow – it’s pretty bizarre, right? But you know what? That’s what makes cowfish so special! It’s their uniqueness that sets them apart from other fish in the sea. And let me tell you, they don’t just look different, they act differently too. Cowfish have some pretty cool skills up their sleeve, like the ability to change colors to camouflage themselves in their surroundings. They’re like real-life chameleons of the sea! But that’s not all, oh no. Cowfish also have a defense mechanism that’s truly out of this world. When they feel threatened, they can puff up their bodies by swallowing water, making it nearly impossible for predators to eat them. Talk about a great party trick!
The lifecycle of a cowfish
Now, let’s talk about the life of a cowfish. Like many other fish, cowfish start off as tiny eggs, which are laid by the female cowfish. These little eggs are protected and cared for by the male cowfish until they hatch. Once they’re hatched, the baby cowfish start their journey as tiny larvae. They go through a period of growth and development, during which they transform into their recognizable boxy shape. As they grow, their coloration changes, and they develop the iconic horns on their heads. It’s an incredible process to witness!
Where can you find cowfish?
If you’re lucky enough to spot a cowfish, you’ll most likely find them in warm coastal waters, coral reefs, and seagrass beds. They tend to live in shallow areas, where they can find plenty of food and shelter. Cowfish are also known to be social creatures, often seen swimming in small groups. So, if you’re ever snorkeling or diving in the ocean, keep your eyes open for these fascinating creatures!
Conclusion
So, there you have it – the wonderful world of cowfish! These creatures may be a little bit strange-looking, but that’s what makes them so amazing. They have the body of a boxfish, the horns of a cow, and some pretty cool tricks up their sleeve. From their ability to change colors to their impressive defense mechanism, cowfish are truly one-of-a-kind. So, next time you’re exploring the ocean, keep a lookout for these extraordinary creatures. Trust me, they’ll be hard to miss!
Guess what? The Barracks heritage building on Bree Street has had a major makeover! It’s like a whole new place now. They call it Cowfish, and it’s become the coolest social spot in Cape Town. The old beams, timbers, and brickwork give it a cool, urban vibe that’s perfect for hanging out with friends.
But it’s not just about the looks. Cowfish has an awesome menu, too, with a mix of Asian-inspired dishes. You can choose from grilled goodies, fresh seafood, and even some amazing sushi. They’ve got a little bit of everything to satisfy your cravings. Fancy some dim sum or salmon tartare? They’ve got it. Or maybe you’re in the mood for a mouthwatering burger or a juicy aged steak. Cowfish has you covered.
Oh, and let me tell you about their signature dishes. They’ve got these amazing honey sriracha wings that are out of this world. And their salmon teriyaki? Simply delicious. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
Here’s some handy information for you: if you’re planning a special event or a year-end function, Cowfish has a mezzanine space that can be booked just for you. How cool is that? And mark your calendar because Cowfish is opening in November 2023.
Now, let’s talk about opening times. Cowfish is open Monday through Thursday from 12pm to 10pm, so you’ve got plenty of time to swing by for lunch or dinner. On Fridays and Saturdays, they’re open until 10pm as well. And on Sundays, you can enjoy Cowfish from 12pm to 7pm.
If you want to get in touch with them, you can shoot them an email at breestreet@cow-fish.co.za. Or you can find them on Instagram at @cowfishbreestreet. They’d love to hear from you!

Led by renowned Chef Kevin Grobler, formerly of JAN Nice, Delaire Graff, and Grande Roche, the culinary experience at Vrymansfontein is inspired by the Mediterranean and the farm-to-table concept envisioned by owner Max Ward.
Amidst the tranquil surroundings, you’ll find the delightful signature restaurant, Scape, which serves a fresh and tantalizing menu of shared plates meant for the entire family. The dishes are so delicious that you’ll want to come back week after week. Imagine savoring a strawberry and goat’s cheese salad sprinkled with pancetta, a beetroot carpaccio infused with grapefruit and almond gremolata, or a succulent roasted veld chicken that has been perfectly brined. To top it off, indulge in the incredible flavors of an exquisite basil ice cream accompanied by crunchy honeycomb. Each bite feels like an explosion of taste.
But that’s not all. You can also unwind and enjoy casual Levantine-style tapas at the bar situated on the shaded Tree Bar terrace. If you prefer the outdoors, you can relax on the lush lawns while enjoying dishes from the Gardens menu, all cooked over an open fire. Meanwhile, the kids can have a blast on the specially crafted timber jungle gym.
Just to keep you in the loop, Vrymansfontein officially reopened its doors on November 10, 2023. The restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday, serving customers from 12pm to 10pm. If you fancy some wine-tasting, the timing is perfect as they are open from 10am to 6pm. To get in touch, you can contact Vrymansfontein at 082 617 4903 or drop an email at info@vrymansfontein.co.za. And if you’re wondering where to find this hidden gem, it’s conveniently located on Suid-Agter Paarl Road in Paarl.

Daniela Zondagh
Hey there! Let me tell you about this hidden gem called Mertia. It’s a fancy dining spot located in Stellenbosch, tucked away on the upper floor of the old Standard Bank building. And let me tell you, the view from those floor-to-ceiling windows is something special. You get to admire the old oak trees and the beautiful Rhenish Church while you dine.
The masterminds behind Mertia are two locals from Stellenbosch, Marais Kirsten-Uys and chef Matt van den Berg. Marais recently returned from working at a prestigious three-Michelin-star restaurant in San Francisco, and Matt brings his expertise from La Colombe and his co-founding of How Bao Now. Together, they’ve created an intimate and comfortable space that celebrates sophistication without all the pomp and circumstance.
They’ve put together a tasting menu that pays homage to nostalgia and the flavors of home. You can feel the love that went into each dish. One of my personal favorites was the venison paired with Mertia’s famous pampoen tart recipe. Another standout was the kinglip with a mouthwatering brandade. And let’s not forget the jam and cheese bread course – a delectable treat. Oh, and did I mention the impeccable wine pairings by sommelier Tino Madzunguruse? It’s truly a symphony for your taste buds.
Mertia is a cozy spot that can accommodate up to 28 guests at a time. If you’re planning a dinner, you have two seating options: 5.30pm or 8pm. But if you’re in the mood for some cocktails and bar snacks, you can always drop by their intimate bar. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a long day.
So, if you’re looking for a unique dining experience in Stellenbosch, Mertia is definitely worth checking out. It’s a new player in town, but it’s already making waves. Trust me, this is one restaurant you don’t want to miss.
Good to know: The restaurant is open on Wednesdays from 5.30pm to 10pm, and on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 12pm to 2pm and 5.30pm to 10pm. On Sundays, they serve from 12pm to 4pm. For reservations, you can reach them at 076 644 8448 or reservations@mertia.co.za. Mertia is located at 20 Bird Street in Stellenbosch, with the entrance off the Millstream side street.

This spot is all about global small plates, dishing out a variety of flavors and culinary influences. You won’t find Asian cuisine here, as that’s Ōku’s domain, but you can expect a menu that highlights seasonal and foraged ingredients in an innovative way.
At Eleven, the menus are always evolving, so there’s always something new to try. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely lunch with friends, where you can share delectable plates, or an upscale three-course dinner, Eleven has got you covered. This place truly celebrates the beauty of each season in a versatile and exciting style.

In just a short drive from Stellenbosch, off the R44, you’ll find a charming Cape Dutch establishment. It’s surrounded by peaceful green hills, lush lawns, and a pond filled with geese… not to mention two peacocks. The restaurant is nestled in a valley of serenity, with the rolling hills creating a tranquil backdrop.
Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a beautiful large restaurant with expansive glass windows. Two fires burn bright, one on each side of the room, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. And if you venture outside, there’s a magnificent old oak tree that adds to the sense of place. No matter where you look, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the countryside.
Now, let’s talk about the food. The head chef, Gareth Goliath, has put together a bistro-style menu that celebrates seasonal and local ingredients. With a nod to Mediterranean flavors, the menu offers a mix of rustic and contemporary dishes that are sure to please any palate.
For starters, you can indulge in fresh oysters with a delicious mignonette dressing. Or perhaps you’d prefer cold poached trout with cucumber, radish, and rocket. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, there’s also a charcuterie and cheese platter or a beetroot carpaccio with feta and toasted pine nuts.
When it comes to main courses, the choices are equally enticing. You can savor the lamb Rogan Josh, served with lentil dahl, sambals, and a butter roti. Or you might opt for the tagliatelle with roasted tomato, aubergine, lemon, and Parmesan. And if you’re in the mood for something classic, there’s a burger served on a fluffy bun with bacon, cheddar cheese, pickles, and chips. For a touch of elegance, you can’t go wrong with the confit duck leg, accompanied by a zesty orange-and-thyme sauce.
Now, no meal is complete without dessert, right? I highly recommend trying the burnt Basque cheesecake with a delightful berry sauce. It’s the perfect way to end a truly delicious feast.
And don’t worry, if you’re bringing the little ones along, there’s a special kids’ menu available. They can choose from Bolognese pasta, chicken strips, a white cheddar farm toastie, or chips. And on a sunny day, they’ll have an abundance of room to play on the vast lawns.
