The Namaqualand daisies are like the rockstars of spring. They burst forth in vibrant orange, covering the veld and attracting people from all around.
In late March, I heard rumors of a magnificent flower display in Nieuwoudtville, only 21 days after the first winter rains in the Hantam. The reports spoke of an abundant bloom of Brunsvigia bosmaniae, so I journeyed north from Cape Town to witness it myself. As I approached, I could already see the pink flowers hugging the edges of the dolerite koppies. The contrast between the thousands of blooms and the gray sands was simply awe-inspiring. It felt just as remarkable as witnessing the great wildebeest migration or observing gorillas in the forests of Uganda. Surprisingly, there were hardly any other people around. The explosion of Brunsvigia had happened almost unnoticed.
When I visited the Cape, I realized that it is a true treasure chest of flowers. It’s not just the famous spring blooms of Namaqualand that steal the show. From the Orange River to Gqeberha, the plants in the fascinating Cape Floristic Region (CFR) and Succulent Karoo put on spectacular floral displays throughout the year. All they require is some water and sunlight to start the breathtaking show.
Have you ever seen the beautiful Brunsvigia bosmaniae, also known as the ‘Maartlelie’? It’s a special flower that only blooms once a year, usually in March. But here’s the catch – it only blooms if it rains! This unique flower can be found near Nieuwoudtwille in South Africa.
Something incredible about this area is that it’s home to the Cape Floral Region, or CFR for short. In fact, the CFR is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. This region is known for having the highest concentration of plant species in the world. What’s even more astonishing is that this area makes up only one percent of Africa’s land but holds 20 percent of its floral diversity!
Within the CFR, you’ll find close to 9,000 different plant species. And out of those, more than 6,000 of them can only be found in this region – they’re endemic to the area. In other words, 70 percent of these unique plants grow exclusively here and nowhere else on our entire planet. That’s truly remarkable, don’t you think?
Unfortunately, the CFR is facing some serious challenges. Two particular habitats, the Lowland Fynbos and Renosterveld, are under significant threat from urban development and farming. As a result, they’re now two of the most endangered habitats in the world. It’s a double-edged sword – the CFR is a biodiversity hotspot, but it also needs our help to protect its incredible plant life.
Let’s Discover the Core Areas
So, you know there are tons of great places to check out in the Cape Floristic Region (CFR). I’m talking about spots like the Cederberg Wilderness Area, Table Mountain, Groot Winterhoek, Boland Mountain Complex, Kirstenbosch, De Hoop Nature Reserve, Agulhas National Park, and the Baviaans-kloof Mega Reserve. All of these incredible locations are managed by Cape Nature and SANParks.
Hey there! I always find it fascinating how nature works and how different species coexist. Just imagine a rock kestrel perching on a canopy of fynbos, scanning the area for mice that feed on seeds dispersed by proteas and restios.
But let’s talk about you. Whether you want to explore the stunning snow proteas in the Cederberg, spot red disas on Table Mountain, or discover leucadendrons in the Groot Winterhoek, there’s always something blooming in winter, spring, and even summer when you’re out there. And if you’re just looking for a quick glimpse of colorful flowers while hiking through fynbos trails, you’re in for a treat!
There’s an incredible variety of flora in fynbos. Can you believe it? More than 600 species of ericas, nearly 1,000 species of daisies, and an abundance of bulbs like iris, watsonia, and babiana. Tracking these floral treasures can be just as thrilling as following the tracks of leopards on a game trail. Speaking of leopards, they call these areas home too, along with a host of other delightful birds like sunbirds and sugarbirds. It’s like a little paradise for nature enthusiasts like us!
Have you ever witnessed the breathtaking beauty of Walker Bay? It’s truly a sight to behold, especially when you’re at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. This place is renowned for its extraordinary array of flower species that you won’t find anywhere else.
Namaqualand and the West Coast: Nature’s Spring Spectacle
Throughout August and early September, something truly magical happens. As winter gives way to warmer temperatures, a burst of colors engulfs the landscape, starting in the north and gradually spreading southwards. It’s like watching a grand show unfold before your eyes. To fully experience this phenomenon, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you should travel from north to south, allowing yourself to be immersed in the beauty of the flowers. Second, plan your visits for when the temperature is above 20°C, ensuring optimal conditions for the flowers to flourish.
Of course, chasing flowers can be a bit unpredictable, similar to following the migration of animals. The duration and intensity of the flowering season depend on factors like rainfall, sunlight, wind, and a touch of luck. Some years, the flower fields may not be as vibrant, but don’t worry. There’s always something special to discover. Head towards the mountains and explore the hidden gems growing in the crags. Who knows what captivating wonders you might find there?
As I wander through the enchanting landscape of Knersvlakte, I am in awe of the incredible array of tiny succulent plants that flourish here.
While the vibrant fields of wildflowers at Skilpad Reserve, Postberg, Biedouw Valley, and other popular spots may be visually stunning, it is important to note that these areas are often artificially planted and sometimes controversial. Such artificial displays only make up a small portion of the region’s plant diversity. The true gems of this ecosystem are the mesembs, or vygies, which encompass over 1,700 species and account for 10 percent of the world’s succulents.
Discovering the Wonders of the Succulent Karoo
Imagine a vast landscape that stretches across Namibia, the Northern Cape, Western Cape, and the Karoo. This is the Succulent Karoo, South Africa’s second global hotspot. It’s home to an incredible variety of plant species, totaling a whopping 6,350. What’s even more remarkable is that many of these species are found nowhere else on Earth.
The Succulent Karoo is a unique ecosystem, similar to the fynbos, but with a twist. While both rely on winter rainfall, the Succulent Karoo thrives in even drier conditions and boasts more fertile soils. However, despite their adaptability, these precious plants face numerous threats.
One of the biggest challenges these plants face is their localized distribution. Because they are found only in specific areas, a single event like a fence being built or a mobile tower being erected can wipe out an entire species. It’s a harsh reality and a constant battle to protect these fragile beauties.
That’s why it’s crucial that we understand and appreciate the importance of the Succulent Karoo. By recognizing the challenges it faces, we can work towards preserving this unique landscape and its precious plant species for future generations to enjoy.
When I explore the Knersvlakte Nature Reserve, I’m immediately captivated by the mesmerizing white quartzite gravel that blankets the landscape. This unassuming terrain is a sanctuary for an incredible array of plant life, housing an astounding 1,500 different species. What’s truly astonishing is that 155 of these captivating plants are in immediate danger of vanishing forever.
As I tread cautiously through this natural wonderland, I can’t help but marvel at the minuscule treasures that dot the landscape. These delicate plants are so tiny and fragile that a mere misstep could crush their petite existence beneath my feet. They possess an awe-inspiring ability to adapt and persist, finely attuned to the rugged environment that surrounds them.
You’ll find these remarkable botanical wonders nestled within the crevices of rocks, seeking refuge from the scorching sun. Many of these plant marvels, especially the stone plants, have formed a special bond with the glistening white quartz beneath their roots. This unique substrate reflects both light and heat, providing them with the ideal conditions for survival in an otherwise challenging habitat.
How amazing is nature? It’s always changing, and never dull. But let me tell you, there’s something else that can capture your attention just as much – a vintage Peugeot from the 1960s. Trust me, its beauty is something you won’t be able to resist.
Now, I want to talk to you about succulents. These fascinating plants have a lot going on. They have to deal with the threat of being eaten by livestock, and there are even people out there who want to snatch them up illegally. It’s a tough world for succulents, but we’re doing our best to protect them. In fact, we’re keeping their exact locations a secret, just like we do for rhinos. That’s how much these plants mean to us.

Heading East
As September comes to a close and the first winds start blowing, the spring flowers begin to fade away in the Western Cape and Northern Cape. But don’t worry, the flower extravaganza isn’t over just yet! It’s just moving eastwards towards beautiful destinations like the Southern Cape, the Garden Route, and Gqeberha.
When I think about Grootbos, a place that comes to mind is a private reserve in the Cape that has a lot of fynbos. It’s located near Gansbaai in the Overberg region, and if you visit in September or October, you’ll likely see southern right whales in the bay. The Lutzeyer family owns Grootbos, and they’ve made great contributions to promoting the flower economy in South Africa.
When it comes to exploring the vast 2,500-hectare reserve at Grootbos, there’s no shortage of trails to choose from. Each trail offers a unique perspective, allowing you to take in the breathtaking mountains, serene ocean views, and vibrant displays of flowers.
At Grootbos, they have a team of 18 skilled horse trainers who cater to riders of all levels. Whether you’re a seasoned equestrian or a beginner, you’ll find the perfect horse to accompany you on your adventure.
As you venture further east, you’ll encounter a captivating blend of species. Here, the proteas, restios, and ericas mingle harmoniously with aloes, spekboom, and striking strelitzias. While the Eastern Cape Thicket may not be as well-known as the CFR or the Succulent Karoo, it’s a biome worth exploring. This unique habitat is characterized by its lush forests and is home to a diverse range of large herbivores.
Years ago, I had the pleasure of working on a book called East of the Cape: Conserving Eden by Richard Cowling. This experience allowed me to travel extensively through the Eastern Cape Thicket, documenting its undeniable charm and allure.
We have some amazing hidden gems right here in Cape Town. Whether you go on a picnic, bring a tent, or stay in a fancy lodge, taking a walk in the flowers and searching for a burst of color can be just as thrilling as spotting the Big Five. The best part is, the flowers don’t wake up until later, so you can sleep in too!
Hey there! You know, I’ve been thinking about this cool beetle called the skunk longhorn. It’s got its name because it lets out a musky smell when you try to pick it up. How interesting is that?
Now, insects, like this beetle, are pretty important because they help pollinate plants. And get this, there’s a whole bunch of them that live right in the fynbos biome. It’s like their very own kingdom!

They offer self-catering accommodation at only R650 per person per night. How cool is that? It’s the perfect place for you to stay while you explore the incredible Cape Floral Kingdom.
When I first heard about Gamkaberg, I was intrigued. Cape Nature is known for their amazing conservation work, so I knew this place would be something special. An enchanting plant called vygie, or Mesembryanthemum, conceals itself amidst the rocks. Vygie, which translates to “small fig” in Afrikaans, owes its name to the fruiting capsule at its peak. Mesembryanthemums boast a stunning array of over 1,700 diverse species.
My Perfect Flower Safari
When I go on a flower safari, I like to take my time and explore the beautiful places around. I usually plan a four-day trip that covers Springbok, Leliefontein, and the coast. But that’s not all! On my way back, I make sure to pass through the breathtaking Knersvlakte and Nieuwoudtville.
One of my favorite stops during this safari is the succulent nursery in Vanrhynsdorp. They have an amazing collection of succulents, including some rare ones from private gardens. It’s a dream come true for any plant lover like me!
Nieuwoudtville is a must-visit destination for bulb enthusiasts. With a staggering 309 species of geophytes, it’s the ultimate hotspot for bulbs. You won’t believe your eyes when you see the incredible variety of plants. In just one square meter of soil, you can find up to 25,000 bulbs or even more. That’s like a treasure trove waiting to be discovered!
So, if you’re looking for a memorable flower safari, this is the route for you. Don’t forget your spade, because every bit of soil here holds a world of wonder!
When spring arrives on the West Coast of Cape Town, the landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colors. The once-subdued beaches now boast fields of colorful blooms, thanks to the nourishing rains of the season.
As I stroll along the streets during this time, I’m greeted by an enchanting sight. The roads are lined with rivers of red and yellow bulbines, and an incredible collage of annuals fills the air with their sweet fragrance. It’s a scene that sparks conversations and excitement among the locals, who can’t help but marvel at the beauty of these flowers.
While the Papkuilsfontein and Matjiesfontein fields are a breathtaking sight to behold, the true floral treasures can be found in more secluded areas. The Hantam Botanical Gardens, the Nieuwoudtville Flower Reserve, and various private farms boast an array of rare and exquisite flowers, tucked away among the granite koppies.
