The Great Next Doors

Hey there! Have you ever wondered what lies beyond your front door? I sure have. It’s amazing how a simple step can open up a world of possibilities. I’m always excited to see what’s waiting for me on the other side.

Exploring the great outdoors is a fantastic way to connect with nature and discover new things. When I step outside, I can feel the warmth of the sun on my face and the gentle breeze whispering through the trees. It’s a sensory experience that invigorates my senses and makes me feel alive.

One of the most incredible things about the great outdoors is the variety of landscapes you can encounter. From rolling hills to towering mountains, there is something for everyone. The lush green forests are home to all sorts of fascinating creatures, and the crystal-clear rivers and lakes are perfect for a refreshing swim.

But it’s not just the physical beauty of nature that captivates me. The great outdoors is also a place of adventure and exploration. When I go hiking, I never know what I might discover. It could be a hidden waterfall cascading down a rocky cliff or a secret cave tucked away in the hills. Every step is a chance to uncover something new and exciting.

Being in nature also has a way of making me feel small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things. When I gaze up at the night sky and see the countless stars glittering above me, I can’t help but feel a sense of wonder and awe. It’s a humbling reminder that there is so much more to this world than meets the eye.

So, if you’re looking for a way to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I highly recommend stepping outside and embracing the great outdoors. It’s a place where you can let go of your worries and immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of nature. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

The great next doors

When I saw the mines and coal trucks on the busy R555 road near Emalahleni, I couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed as a nature lover. But as soon as I entered the Bezhoek Nature Reserve, everything changed. The noisy industry was replaced by a breathtaking gorge covered in beautiful indigenous forest, and any doubts I had vanished. I drove past calm impala herds and blue wildebeests and came across a sign that pointed to my next adventure. Behind it were nine spacious tents, facing out towards the open plains.

This private reserve spans an impressive 4,500 hectares and includes the majestic Olifants River. It has become well-known as a popular spot for day visitors who enjoy mountain biking and hiking. And now, it offers a new experience for those looking to combine nature and comfort: a glamping hub.

As a psychologist, I ventured into the world of adventure almost ten years ago. And let me tell you, there’s something about abseiling that awakens new neural pathways in your brain.

So there I was, at the edge of the escarpment, overlooking the Olifants River as it shimmered in the sunlight. The distant sound of baboon barks rose from below, adding to the already exhilarating atmosphere.

Now, you might be wondering why I willingly put myself in this position, standing on the rim with a sheer drop of 40 meters below. Well, it all comes down to the thrill, the rush of adrenaline, and the sense of accomplishment that comes with conquering your fears.

When I took that initial dip backward into thin air during abseiling, it was a nerve-wracking experience. Rene, who was above me, shouted to lean back and take my hands off the rig, reassuring me to trust the ropes. With a deep breath, I let go and found myself suspended in the pleasant spring air.

In that moment, I felt a rush of excitement. I couldn’t help but raise my hands up and celebrate my accomplishment. I let out a loud yell, “Yeeeeeeha!”, echoing through the air as I looked down at the baboons below.

The mechanics of abseiling were straightforward – just feed the rope and walk down the cliff. However, the mental aspect of it was a different story. Even though I had technically reached the bottom, I felt like I was on top of the world. As I walked back to camp, I was delighted to stumble upon a group of giraffes, their long necks reaching high as they curiously watched us pass by.

As I walk through the shady acacias and tamboti trees, I can’t help but appreciate how well-thought-out and carefully designed the four bush campsites are. The low, wide electric fence that surrounds the campsites serves as a protective barrier, keeping wild animals at bay while allowing us to observe the passing game. Each campsite has its own ablution facilities, so you can leave your towel hanging on the hook for the entire weekend. I particularly love campsite number one, with its unobstructed views of the breathtaking sunset. For those with caravans, there are also five larger campsites available, which share a bathroom.

One of the highlights of this bush getaway is the self-drive safari route, which you can explore with a day permit costing R250. After a day of adventure and exploration, spend your evenings relaxing by a blazing fire at your campsite. It’s a magical experience, made even more special by the peaceful stillness that surrounds you. You might occasionally hear the faint sounds of cars driving on the nearby N1 highway, but it does little to detract from the tranquility and serenity of this easily accessible and incredibly affordable bush break.
