Allow me to introduce you to the De Hoop Camino Luxury Coastal Trail. This remarkable journey offers both guided and unguided options, spanning across five days and four nights. Together, we will traverse through the De Hoop Nature Reserve, immersing ourselves in its remarkable biodiversity.

• Day 1 & 2: Take the opportunity to explore the stunning surroundings of Lekkerwater Beach Lodge. This unique reserve stretches along the beautiful southern coast of the Western Cape. Located in the middle of the reserve, Lekkerwater offers a peaceful coastal getaway surrounded by fynbos, inter-tidal ecosystems, and an abundance of incredible wildlife.
• Day 1: As an optional activity, you can embark on a 6km walk starting from the Lekkerwater Lodge parking area and following a route through the fynbos. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature as you explore this enchanting landscape.
• Day 2: Indulge in guided marine and nature walks or opt for a self-guided adventure. Alternatively, simply take a moment to relax and soak up the stunning views that surround you.
• Day 3: On this exciting day, you’ll embark on a self-guided coastal walk that will take you from Lekkerwater Beach Lodge to Koppie Alleen at De Hoop Collection. This incredible hike will span six to nine hours and showcase the most magnificent section of the renowned Whale Trail. The trail will treat you to breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, as well as the surrounding hills, gorges, caves, and ravines. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of natural wonders, including sandy beaches, limestone karst rock platforms, blow holes, and natural swimming pools. The trail will culminate in the magnificent De Hoop Collection’s De Mond Villa, where you’ll spend the next two nights. Once you arrive, take some time to relax and soak in the beautiful vistas, while also indulging in birdwatching along the shores of the De Hoop Vlei. In the evening, you’ll be treated to a mouthwatering potjiekos dinner under the starry sky, creating the perfect end to an adventurous day.
• Day 4: Today, I’m excited to explore the western part of the De Hoop Reserve. After a delicious breakfast, I’ll put on my hiking boots for a 5km guided walk around the beautiful De Hoop Vlei. During the walk, I’ll get to see many different kinds of birds and explore the stunning fynbos that surrounds the area. After the hike, we’ll have a brunch at Melkkamer, a historic homestead that was built over a hundred years ago. Then, we’ll take a boat across the vlei to continue our walk for another 7-8 km. This part of the hike will take us along cliffs, along the edge of the vlei, and through some open areas where we might even see some wildlife. Finally, we’ll gather around the campfire at De Mond Villa for a delicious dinner.

I am thrilled to share with you the exciting itinerary for Day 5 of our adventure! After enjoying a delicious breakfast, you’ll be taken to Tierhoek for an unforgettable guided trail. This 4km route will lead you through the stunning fynbos paradise of Flatrock, treating you to breathtaking panoramic views of the De Hoop Vlei.

At the end of the trail, you’ll be picked up by a vehicle at the main entrance gate of the De Hoop Reserve and driven to the Lekkerwater car park. From there, you’ll embark on a guided walk to the incredible Potberg Vulture Colony. This colony is the last remaining active Cape Vulture Colony in the Western Cape, making it a truly unique and awe-inspiring sight to behold.

As for the length of our walks throughout the trip, it all depends on the levels of fitness and enthusiasm of our group members. It’s possible that over the course of the five days, we may walk a total distance of 45km-50km. Keep in mind that this particular walk requires a minimum of four guests, and we highly recommend small groups for a more personalized experience.

• I’ll arrange for a road transfer to transport you and your luggage from the Lekkerwater carpark to the Lodge.
• Your accommodation will consist of:
• Two nights (Day 1 & 2) at Lekkerwater Beach Lodge, where you’ll enjoy one of seven rooms, each featuring a deck that offers breathtaking views of a pristine 5km stretch of beach.
• For the next two nights (Days 3 & 4), you’ll stay at the De Hoop Collection. Depending on availability, you’ll either be accommodated at the luxurious De Mond Villa (the brand new addition to the De Hoop Collection) or the Opstal Suites or Melkkamer Manor.
• I’ll take care of transferring your luggage from Lekkerwater to the De Hoop Collection, ensuring a hassle-free experience for you.
• You’ll also be provided with road transfers from Koppie Alleen to the De Hoop Collection, as well as transportation back to the Lekkerwater carpark at the end.
• All your meals, local drinks, and in-lodge activities will be included, so you can fully immerse yourself in the experience.
• The package also covers the Community and Reserve fee, which amounts to R 550 per person, at Lekkerwater Beach Lodge.

*Excludes – please note that the following are not included in the package: transfers by road to and from the De Hoop Nature Reserve; a park entrance fee of R50 per person per night, which must be paid in cash to CapeNature upon arrival at the Reserve gate; fully comprehensive travel insurance; gratuities for the lodge staff and guides; and premium drinks that are not on the “house” list.

Now, let’s talk about what you should bring along. Besides a sense of fun and adventure, make sure to pack a small backpack and a water bottle. Sunblock is essential, as well as a swimming costume and a sarong. Don’t forget to bring a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from the sun. Binoculars and a camera are must-haves to capture the amazing wildlife. Comfortable closed walking shoes are a good idea, and if you happen to have reef shoes, bring them along too. Lastly, it’s always a good idea to have a small first aid kit with you, just in case.

De Hoop Reserve is a stunning destination that you’ll love all year round. In the summer months (November-March), the days are absolutely perfect for exploring the coast. From April to May and September to October, the fynbos bursts into life, and the sunset views are simply breathtaking. During winter (July-November), the Southern Right whales come to visit, gathering in the warm seas to give birth, mate, and play around.
