As I gaze out over the energetic atmosphere of Kalk Bay and the magnificent ocean stretching beyond, I am filled with a sense of wonder. The scene is perfectly complemented by a delightful trio of refreshing summer soups and salads, which share the spotlight with Catherine Marshall’s exceptional Chenin Blanc, lovingly named ‘Jono’s Wave’.
I couldn’t help but inquire about the inspiration behind the name, and Cathy, a proud Kalk Bay resident, graciously shared the story. She explained that the wine is named after her ‘surfer-dude’ son, as the invigorating flavors of the wine bring to mind the exhilaration of a crashing wave.
What truly sets Catherine Marshall wines apart is the meticulous selection of grapes from esteemed Elgin Valley growers, making it the pioneering range in South Africa created by a talented woman winemaker. Cathy believes that the key to capturing the essence of these wines lies in Elgin’s reputation as the coldest climate region in the country. This cool climate ensures the preservation of freshness, brightness, and the purest expression of fruit, all of which beautifully translate into the final product.
‘Elgin is considered to be the coolest climate… which is important to lock in freshness, brightness and purity of fruit that then translate to the final wine,’ says Cathy.
In addition to their exceptional quality, it’s worth noting that all of Cathy’s wines are vegan-friendly, making them a conscious choice for those seeking a cruelty-free indulgence.
Hey there! Let me paint you a mouth-watering picture. The main course was just perfect. It was like a work of art, carefully paired with a Catherine Marshall Pinot Noir. And speaking of Catherine Marshall, she’s got a whole range of vegan wines that are worth checking out. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
Now, let’s talk about the next dishes. Brace yourself for some serious flavor. First up, we had the Chef’s Stacked Slider. It was a masterpiece. And as if that wasn’t enough, we were also treated to some delicious home-made Pasta Arribiata and Lentil and Aubergine Moussaka. These dishes were bursting with flavor, and guess what? They were perfectly paired with the Sandstone Soils Pinot Noir. It was a match made in food heaven. And let me tell you, the crowd was loving it, especially those eco-conscious folks!
But wait, there’s more! After devouring the main course, it was time for dessert. And oh boy, you won’t believe your eyes when you see the dessert platter. It was a sight to behold. We had an extravagant display of Almond Chai Latte Panna Cotta, Chilled Beetroot Cashew Cake, and Dark Chocolate Brownie with Banana Ice cream. Talk about a sweet feast!
And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, Chef Michael surprised us with his signature ‘Billion-dollar Shortbread’. Let me tell you, this shortbread is something else. It’s natural, preservative-free, vegan, and gluten-free. It’s like a guilt-free indulgence that you can’t resist. Trust me, you won’t be able to stop drooling!
Guilt-free indulgence! Take a look at this beautiful image by Jess Oosthuyse.
The Courtyard Café is no ordinary café. We do things a little differently here. We take pride in producing our own almond milk, pasta, bread, pesto, hummus, and salad dressing. We want to offer you the best, and that’s why we’ve recently opened a deli within the restaurant. This way, you can easily take these amazing products home with you, and enjoy them whenever you want.
But wait, there’s more! This summer, we’re introducing a new feature. You can now order your own plant-based takeaway picnic to enjoy anywhere in Kalk Bay. Whether it’s at the beach, on the mountainside, or under a shady tree, our picnic will bring you joy and satisfaction.
“It’s wonderful to look back and see how far we’ve come in the last five years. It fills me with excitement and curiosity to imagine where we’ll be in the next five years of our journey,” says Jolene Kritzinger, the proud owner of The Courtyard Café.
I must admit, I feel the same way. Don’t you?
