Schoone Oordt, TripAdvisor
Welcome to a town that will rejuvenate your spirit.
Resting in a tranquil valley, embraced by the majestic Langeberg Mountains, lies one of South Africa’s oldest towns. Swellendam, with its charming Cape Dutch houses topped with thatched roofs, holds within its walls a storied history of almost 300 years. In 1745, the Dutch East India Company established this town as a frontier outpost. It played a vital role as a supply point for adventurers and traders venturing further inland from the Cape. As British settlers arrived in the early 19th century, Swellendam flourished, transforming into a bustling center for trade and agriculture. Today, it stands proudly as the proud home of more than 50 provincial heritage sites and a must-visit destination for those exploring the famous Garden Route.
But the sense of adventure still lingers in Swellendam. Just like the Dutch explorers who saw it as the entrance to unexplored territories, we today are captivated by its abundant history and breathtaking natural wonders. These rural escapes highlight the charm of Swellendam and will make you feel rejuvenated and eager for your next adventure, just like it did for the merchants of earlier times.
Experience Schoone Oordt
Welcome to Schoone Oordt, a beautiful Victorian-style mansion that has been transformed into a boutique hotel. The owners, Alison and Richard Walker, have lovingly restored this historic estate and turned it into a charming getaway. As you explore the premises, you can’t help but wonder about the stories this place holds, and the many families who have called it home over the years. While the archives were lost in a fire, the owners have painstakingly pieced together its past from word-of-mouth tales.
One of the highlights of Schoone Oordt is its collection of eight Luxury Rooms. These rooms offer a private patio with breathtaking views of a vibrant rose garden. Inside, you’ll find a cozy king-size or twin bed, a spacious en-suite bathroom with an oversized shower, a fireplace to keep you warm, air conditioning for those hot days, underfloor heating for chilly nights, and all the modern amenities you could ask for – including wireless internet, a minibar, tea and coffee facilities, DStv, and a DVD player. If you’re traveling with your family, the Family Cottage, a restored Coach House, is the perfect choice. It can accommodate up to six people and features a separate king-sized bed for parents. The Family Suite, which also sleeps six, offers the same amenities as the cottage and has a small kitchenette.
For those seeking the ultimate romantic getaway, the Honeymoon Suite awaits. Nestled beside the Koornlands River and surrounded by a magical forest, this suite offers a beautifully carved four-poster bed, a luxurious bathroom, and a grand fireplace that adds to the overall ambiance.
The central feature of Schoone Oordt is the grand Manor House, which stands apart from the guest rooms. The lush gardens, with their fountains and a saltwater swimming pool, create a tranquil atmosphere. Inside the mansion, you’ll find a cozy bar and lounge area with a fireplace, a country-style kitchen, and the Conservatory restaurant. The restaurant serves delicious breakfasts, afternoon tea, and dinners that feature seasonal dishes paired with locally sourced vintage wines.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the warm and friendly staff in the beautifully decorated living room. They had prepared a refreshing spread of homemade lemonade, ice tea, freshly baked scones, and fruit bowls, which was a lovely touch. And to our surprise, on the day of our departure, our muddy car was treated to a full valet car wash!
If you’re looking to explore the area, the reception staff is more than happy to assist you with recommendations. Nearby, you’ll find the Ikigai Coffee Bar & Deli, a local favorite for coffee and delicious food. You can also visit historical sites like the Golden Mile and the Old Gaol, as well as indulge in some sweet treats at The Chocolate Shop and the Bee & Honey Shop. For nature enthusiasts, a short drive away is the Wildebraam Berry Estate, where you can even join in the berry-picking season. The Sulina Faerie & Healing Sanctuary offers a peaceful retreat, and there’s also a nine-hole golf course nearby. Adventure-seekers can enjoy activities like river rafting, mountain biking, horse-riding, and hiking trails. And for families, The Swellendam Getaway Adventure Farm is a must-visit, with its maze, tractor rides, and paintballing.
When it comes to pricing, the Luxury Rooms range from R2,200 to R3,150 depending on the season. The Honeymoon Suite and Family Cottage range from R3,150 to R4,000, also depending on the season.
Schoone Oordt is located at 1 Swellengrebel Street, Swellendam. Come and experience the beauty and warmth this boutique hotel has to offer – you won’t be disappointed.
