So, I decided to go on a search for the best places to stay in Southern Africa. My quest led me to Franschhoek, a beautiful destination that I just couldn’t resist exploring.

I started my adventure by consulting TripAdvisor, a trusty source that helped me narrow down the options. I visited a total of 42 B&Bs, inns, and specialty lodgings that were ranked at the top, as well as a few hidden gems that haven’t made it onto the list just yet. Let me tell you, I stumbled upon some truly wonderful places that I wouldn’t mind staying at myself.

Now, I’m here to share my top picks with you – and the best part is, you can book these unforgettable spots for less than R450 per person per night. Yes, you heard that right! These are the ultimate, tried-and-tested Franschhoek accommodations that you won’t want to miss out on. Get ready for some serious wanderlust as I take you through my favorites. All the stunning images you see here were captured by the talented Teagan Cunniffe.

Why should you choose Franschhoek?

Imagine rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous. From respected entrepreneurs like Richard Branson and Analjit Singh to the illustrious Ruperts, those who can afford to live anywhere in the world choose Franschhoek as their sanctuary. And really, who can blame them?

But wait, there’s more!

Don’t be discouraged by the exclusivity. While it may seem like a world reserved for the elite, there are still affordable places to stay in this enchanting town. Forget about the crowded commercial high street and navigate the scenic back roads that wind through orchards and vineyards. As you venture deeper into the valley, you’ll be treated to awe-inspiring 360-degree vistas that will leave you breathless. It’s a refreshing escape from the typical urban landscapes dominated by business parks, high rises, and plastic tunnels. Here, in Franschhoek, you’ll bask in the joy of being enveloped by nature’s splendid cathedral. And the best part? You can revel in the comforting embrace of a cozy en-suite cabin for just R250 per person. It’s a steal!

Choosing my home away from home

When it came to finding the perfect place to stay in Franschhoek, I had a difficult time narrowing down my options. After spending days researching online, I finally chose 42 accommodations to inspect. Honestly, I would have been happy to stay at any of them. However, for the purpose of this article, I will only focus on the best self-catering options. Keep in mind that just because you have a kitchen doesn’t mean you have to cook. Franschhoek is known as the country’s gourmet capital, and you can easily explore nearby Stellenbosch to decide for yourself who deserves that title.

Franschhoek is finally expanding its culinary scene with the upcoming opening of Bukhara and Haiku across from Le Quartier Francais.

Imagine embarking on an adventure to discover a hidden treasure. Following the captivating signs that lead you to Chamonix, you journey through vast vineyards, ascending through fields where graceful zebras and antelopes graze. As you continue, you pass by the Marco Polo Lodge, adorned with fascinating animal trophies, climbing higher into the majestic embrace of the mountain. Eventually, you arrive at the pinnacle, where an awe-inspiring sight awaits you – Waterfall Lodge, a charming stone-and-thatch house nestled at the foot of a magnificent waterfall.

Upon entering, you’ll find the lodge is compact and cozy, perfect for a small family or two adults seeking an intimate retreat. With a loft featuring two single beds and a separate bedroom boasting a king-size bed, the accommodations may be snug, but they exude warmth and comfort. The lodge also offers a petite lounge area and a narrow kitchenette, complete with a remarkably efficient Queen Anne stove.

While the view from the lodge is partially obscured by trees, its secluded location provides a peaceful sanctuary away from the bustle of town. It takes approximately 10 minutes to reach the lively center. However, the true enchantment lies in stepping out of your back door and immersing yourself in your private stone pool, surrounded by lush ferns. This crystal-clear oasis receives the waterfall’s thunderous cascade, infusing the air with purifying negative ions. It’s a scene straight out of a fairy tale – truly magical.

Cost: For only R1500, you can enjoy a two-night stay at Clementine Cottage that has enough space to comfortably sleep four people. The price is a steal!

2. Clementine Cottage

The best self-catering cottages in Franschhoek MzansiBride

I gotta tell ya, folks, Clementine Cottage is something special. Tucked away in the stunning L’Avenir Farm, surrounded by vineyards and orchards off Green Valley Road, it’s truly a sight to behold. And don’t even get me started on the location – just a quick three-minute drive to the center of it all. It doesn’t get much better than that!

But let me tell you, Clementine Cottage is more than just a pretty face. Unlike most self-catering cottages in the valley that are converted laborers’ quarters (you know, lacking in space and privacy), this place was purpose-built. They knew what they were doing.

When you step inside, you’re welcomed by two equally spacious bedrooms – one on each side of the open lounge-kitchen area. And let me tell you, they don’t skimp on comfort. Both rooms have their own en-suite bathrooms, so no fighting over who gets the good one!

Oh, and the best part? You’re gonna love this. The lounge and kitchen have French doors that open up onto a gorgeous veranda. Talk about a view! You’ll be staring out at the pool and vineyards, feeling like you’re in paradise. And if the weather’s nice, step outside and fire up the braai – they’ve got plenty of wood for you, so don’t worry about that.

So, there you have it, folks. Clementine Cottage is the real deal. It’s got the location, the space, and the views to make your stay unforgettable. Trust me, you won’t regret booking this gem. Now go on, make your reservation and get ready for the vacation of a lifetime!

Price: You can stay at Clementine Cottage for R1400 if there are two of you, or R2400 for four people. They clean the cottages from Monday to Saturday.

3. Riverside Cottages at La Bourgogne

Riverside Cottages at La Bourgogne is ranked No. 13 out of 39 in the Speciality Lodging category on TripAdvisor.

The best self-catering cottages in Franschhoek MzansiBride

Imagine stepping onto a swing bridge that crosses over a babbling stream. The moment you do, you’ll know that something remarkably special awaits you. These cottages were constructed in the 1950s as three separate blocks to house laborers. While they may not have the grandeur or seclusion of Clementine, Rose, or Bo La Motte, they possess a genuine sense of comfort and charm. Nestled within a lush, mature garden that stretches down to the riverbank, these cottages offer a homely respite at half the price. The first block comprises two-bedroom units that open up to a shared patio area and serene garden views. Set back from them are four one-bedroom units. Among these, my personal favorite is Lemon. It not only offers a hint of privacy, being the last cottage in the row, but it boasts the most inviting open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space. The only potential downside is that it’s furnished with twin beds. When combined, La Bourgogne can accommodate up to 16 guests and offers a delightful communal pool area. It’s the perfect choice for a group of friends hoping to enjoy an idyllic getaway together.

Price: If you’re looking for affordable accommodation, Courchevel Cottages has got you covered. You can book a cozy one-bedroom unit for only R850 per night, which can comfortably sleep two people. If you need a bit more space, there’s a two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit available for R1300 per night, perfect for up to four guests. But here’s the real deal: if you want to gather a group of friends or family, you can book all six cottages for a two-night stay at the unbeatable price of R5500. It’s a steal!

Extras: Planning a family trip? No problem! Courchevel Cottages offers small mattresses for extra children at an affordable price of R50 per day. And the best part? Camp cots are absolutely free! So you can rest assured that everyone will have a comfortable place to sleep.

Perks: As a bonus, all bookings at Courchevel Cottages include a complimentary wine tasting in the beautiful tasting room. It’s the perfect opportunity to unwind and enjoy some of the finest wines the region has to offer. Cheers to that!

Location: Convenience is key, and Courchevel Cottages is just a quick two-minute drive away from the charming village. So you can easily explore the local attractions, dine at the cozy restaurants, and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Franschhoek.

The Perfect Retreat for Horse Lovers and Romantics

4. Courchevel Cottages

TripAdvisor ranking: No. 49 out of 59 B&Bs in Franschhoek

The best self-catering cottages in Franschhoek MzansiBride

Up the slopes of Chamonix farm, the Courchevel estate sprawls across a swell of land. Green fields with paddocks and grazing horses are spread out, creating a picturesque view (take a look at the cover image). On the edge of the estate, you’ll find five former laborers’ cottages, with breathtaking views of the valley. Sonja Hellinger, the delightful owner, has transformed four of these cottages. As a passionate horsewoman, Sonja even set aside a paddock for guests who want to bring their horses on vacation! The cottages have a rough and rustic charm, with half-stripped walls. However, Sonja’s attention to detail is evident in the beautiful bathrooms, quality linen, and carefully chosen furniture. The whole atmosphere is shabby-chic and romantic. Three of the cottages come with large fireplaces, and all of them are stocked with wood, candles, delicious rusks, port, good filter coffee, and toiletries – a generous touch considering the price. Courchevel, Heart of the Horse, and Waterfall Lodge are the most romantic retreats you’ll find. However, Die Ou Stalle doesn’t offer the same picture-perfect views or a fireplace.

Cost: You can stay at Scott’s, Courchevel, or Die Ou Stalle for R1200 per night, and they each sleep four people. If you prefer Heart of the Horse, it costs R800 per night and sleeps two. Keep in mind that starting from December 2015, the rates will increase by R150.

Discover the Best Luxury Cottages with Private Pools

5. Rose Cottages

Ranked No. 12 out of 39 on TripAdvisor for Speciality Lodging

The best self-catering cottages in Franschhoek MzansiBride

Wow, can you believe what a great deal this is? It’s got everything you could want: peace, privacy, spaciousness, a cozy fireplace, and even a private pool. And the views are absolutely breathtaking – they’re so stunning, you might think you’re dreaming!

Joan Archibald, the wonderful woman who owns this place, has built two beautiful cottages on her farm-garden. They’re just the right distance apart, so you’ll have all the privacy you need. Personally, I think The Stables is the best choice. It’s a cozy two-bedroom cottage nestled among the vineyards. But if you need more space, no worries! The Vineyard is a fantastic double-storey place that can sleep up to five people. It has an en-suite bedroom downstairs and another one upstairs in the mezzanine.

Now, if you prefer something a bit bigger and are only looking to accommodate two people, The Cottage might be the way to go. It’s a spacious wing that’s part of the main house. Sure, it’s not as secluded as the other two options, but most of the time, Joan’s daughter, who lives in the main house, is away in Joburg. So, chances are, you’ll have the terrace and pool all to yourself. And let me tell you, the views from there are absolutely mind-blowing. You’ll be surrounded by gorgeous vineyards and mountains as far as the eye can see.

The farm is conveniently situated just a quick two-minute drive away from the village. So, you’ll have easy access to everything you need. It’s the perfect location, if you ask me.

Cost: If you’re a couple, you can stay at The Cottage on 55 for only R1600 per night. It’s a great deal considering the location and amenities. You’ll have everything you need for a comfortable stay.

A charming garden cottage in the heart of the village

6. The Cottage On 55

The best self-catering cottages in Franschhoek MzansiBride

Dutch couple Erna and Guido Louwerse have turned their garden cottage into a wonderful bed and breakfast with two separate units. The larger unit, called the deluxe, is perfect for self-catering. It’s a bright and open studio-style room with a unique corner fireplace and doors that lead out to the pool area where breakfast is served (which is included in the rate, even if you choose to cook for yourself). And don’t worry about meal options – there are plenty of restaurants just a short walk away.

But that’s not all! There’s also another en-suite bedroom connected to the studio room, with its own entrance from the garden. And they’ve cleverly set it up so that your privacy won’t be compromised when it’s occupied.

The deluxe unit costs R1500 and can accommodate two people. Breakfast is included. If you’re interested, you can find more information and contact the owners at cottageon55.com.

Now, let’s move on to the next highlight: “The Library”. It’s the most stylish and luxurious home you’ll find in the village.

The best self-catering cottages in Franschhoek MzansiBride

I love the feeling of walking to dinner in the evening, but still having the option to cook my own meals. Sometimes, though, places that offer self-catering accommodations sacrifice style for convenience. That’s not the case with Jo Sinfield’s collection of charming houses in the village. Out of the three best houses – The Library, The Map Room, and Explorers Club – Jo owns all of them! If you’re planning a big gathering with friends and kids, Explorers Club is the perfect choice. But if you’re looking for the most beautiful rental in the village, The Library is the one for you.

When you walk into The Library, you’ll find two huge bedrooms with their own bathrooms. These bedrooms open up to the pool and garden. There’s also a separate cottage with another en-suite bedroom. But the real gem of the house is the upstairs living area. It’s a spacious, open-plan space with plenty of natural light. The room is filled with carpets, books, and lovely decorative objects. And when you step onto the deck, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views of the mountains. It’s truly a sight to behold.

As for The Map Room, it offers a similar setup, but on a smaller scale. It has two bedrooms and a cozy living area. This house is absolutely stunning, and it’s no wonder that it’s almost always booked. Plus, it’s a more affordable option, making it even more appealing.

Cost: When it comes to pricing, the Map Room ranges from R2300 to R3000, accommodating two to four people. The Explorers Club has a wider range, from R4300 to R7200, perfect for a larger group of two to ten. Lastly, we have The Library, which costs R4950 to R6850 and can comfortably sleep two to six people. Keep in mind that there might be additional charges during the festive period.

Experience the Real Farm Life at Bo La Motte Farm Cottages

8. Bo La Motte Farm Cottages

Ranked at an impressive No. 2 out of 39 specialty lodgings according to TripAdvisor.

The best self-catering cottages in Franschhoek MzansiBride

Imagine stepping into the past, where the history of Bo La Motte stretches back to the late 1600s. The owners of this enchanting place have managed to preserve its rural charm while offering a comfortable and inviting experience. They have accomplished this by creating five cozy cottages that are both simple and well-appointed. Among them, Goose and Milkwood stand out, as they have retained their original features, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of a farm cottage from yesteryears. With two bedrooms and two bathrooms, these cottages offer the perfect balance of comfort and nostalgia. Surrounded by lush green lawns, they have undergone recent upgrades but still boast their original fireplaces and thick walls, which are as sturdy as a forearm. Pear Tree Cottage, another option with stunning views (although the landscape may change during the dry summers), adopts a more modern Cape Victorian style, complete with a cozy Jetmaster fireplace. If the Goose and Milkwood cottages are fully booked, I would personally recommend considering Clementine Cottage or Rose Cottages. However, keep in mind that Bo La Motte is one of the top choices in Franschhoek, located just two minutes away from the village. So, if you want to secure any of these remarkable cottages, it’s best to make your reservation well in advance.

Cost: If you’re looking for a cozy and affordable place to stay in Franschhoek, you have plenty of options to choose from. The Goose, Milkwood, and Pear Tree accommodations are perfect for groups of four and are priced at R2100 per night. If you’re traveling as a couple, the Oak cabin is available for R1100, or you can opt for the Pump House for R900. If you have any extra children with you, the staff can provide additional beds or cots upon request. Housekeeping services are provided every day except Sundays, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

9. Otter’s Bend Lodge

If you’re looking for a unique experience in Franschhoek, consider staying at Otter’s Bend Lodge. They have five adjoining en-suite bedrooms, a dorm room, and two cottages available. Guests can enjoy the communal self-catering area called Otter’s Barrel, located next to the river and equipped with everything you need. There’s even a small pool for you to relax in. Prices start at R300 per person or R500 for sharing.

10. Bird Cottage

Bird Cottage is a cute little cottage with two bedrooms, built in the charming Cape Victorian style. It is nestled high up on the slopes of Montagne Farm, offering incredible views. While it may be a bit difficult to find and a little far from town, it sits at the base of a stunning conservation area, making it the perfect getaway for hikers. If you’re sharing, the price is R700, or R1400 for a group of four (with a small discount for four bookings). To book, call Tel 0218762136.

11. Stony Brook Cottages

Stony Brook Cottages were once labourers’ cottages but have been converted into a collection of cottages on a beautiful wine farm. There are five units in total, with four one-bedroom cottages and one two-bedroom cottage. There is a small communal pool for all guests to enjoy. If you value your privacy, the close proximity to neighbours might be a bit unsettling. However, the setting is absolutely stunning. Prices start at R850 for sharing.

12. Gooding’s Groves

I found a place called Gooding’s Groves that might be perfect for you. It’s located off the busy R45, so it may not be as peaceful as the other options I mentioned earlier. However, I think you would still enjoy staying in one of their two semi self-catering Barn Suites. These suites can accommodate up to four people and cost R1700 per night.

If you prefer a more private experience, Gooding’s Groves also has a two-bedroom house with its own pool. This house is available for R2600 per night and can also accommodate four people.

Before you make a final decision, I want to remind you that these prices are subject to change. It’s always a good idea to double-check with the establishment before you book your stay.

Lastly, this article was originally published in the October 2015 issue of Getaway magazine, so keep in mind that some details may have changed since then.
