Welcome to the Ultimate Guide to Beaches in Cape Town!
Hey there! Are you ready to embark on a beach adventure in Cape Town? Prepare for some serious fun in the sun as we explore the amazing beaches this vibrant city has to offer.
What makes a beach special? Is it breathtaking views, perfect swimming conditions, plenty of space to relax, or maybe even a sprinkle of sand? Well, lucky for you, Cape Town has it all! You’ll find a fantastic variety of beaches along the Atlantic and False Bay coastlines, each with its own unique charm and attractions.
Ready to discover some hidden gems? Join me as we unveil a few lesser-known beaches that will make your seaside experience extra special. And if you’re looking for a wave-free swimming spot, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Check out our list of the best tidal pools in Cape Town!
Hey there! Before you hit the beach, let me give you some important tips. First, it’s a good idea to go to the beach during the day and avoid swimming after dark. Trust me, the sea can get a bit spooky at night. Also, keep an eye on the tides, they can be pretty unpredictable. Oh, and one more thing – drinking alcohol in public is a no-go, so leave the booze at home. Let’s keep the beaches clean too. Please don’t leave any litter behind. Our beautiful environment deserves better. Speaking of keeping things safe, the Shark Spotters on the False Bay coast are doing an amazing job at keeping us informed and protected!
Llandudno
Welcome to Llandudno, a stunning beach that feels like your own little paradise. To get here, you’ll take a scenic drive down a winding road. Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by massive boulders on each side of the beach. The boulders on the left are called Sunset Rocks, and trust me, they live up to their name. The crowd here is diverse and chill. You’ll find surfers, families, friends, and tourists all enjoying the beauty of this place. Now, don’t let me scare you, but the water here can be a bit on the chilly side. But, let me tell you, on a hot day, that cold water feels absolutely amazing! If you plan on spending a long day at Llandudno, make sure to bring all your beach gear and some yummy food for a picnic. There aren’t any stores or restaurants nearby, so come prepared. Although, during busy times, you might find some vendors selling water and snacks. And if you’re feeling adventurous, make sure to explore the hidden caves nestled between the boulders. These caves were once home to the ancestral Khoi-San people.
What you need to know: Llandudno’s beach has been awarded Blue Flag status this summer season, which means it’s clean and beautiful.
Parking: There’s a small carpark, but if it’s full, you can find parking in the residential streets nearby.
Toilets: Yes, they have toilets, so no worries there.
Can I bring my dog?: Unfortunately, you can’t bring your dog between 9 am and 6 pm from November to March. But any other time, they’re free to roam around.
Where to grab a bite: If you’re feeling hungry and want to explore a bit, head over to Hout Bay’s Bay Harbour Market. They have delicious food stalls with something for everyone.
Clifton Beaches: A Slice of Paradise
Let me tell you about Clifton’s stunning beaches. Imagine four pristine stretches of sand, kissed by vibrant blue waves and protected from gusts of wind. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but personally, I adore Clifton 2nd. Why? Because it caters to everyone! From glamorous movie stars to sun-worshippers, beach sports enthusiasts, and families – there’s something for everyone here.
Now, I have a secret to share about the water. Brace yourself because, just like every other beach on the Atlantic side, it’s ice-cold. But that doesn’t stop the brave souls from taking a quick dip to cool off. It’s all part of the Clifton experience.
But what makes Clifton truly special is the atmosphere. Picture this – a perfect day with the sun shining bright, the air filled with the enchanting scent of fresh seaweed and suntan lotion. Ice-cream vendors call out, “Granadilla lollies to make you jolly!” Seagulls swoop and scream overhead. It’s pure bliss. Trust me; there’s no better place to be.
Now, if you’re not in the mood for people-watching, don’t worry. You can rent umbrellas and loungers or bring along your own snacks and entertainment. Grab a book, a bat, or a frisbee and make the most of your time here.
Good to know:
Clifton 4th has been awarded Blue Flag status for this summer season. That means you can expect the highest standards of cleanliness and safety.
Parking:
There’s not much parking available, but don’t fret! You can conveniently hop on the MyCity bus, as there’s a stop right across from the beach.
Toilets:
If nature calls, you’ll find toilets at 4th Beach. No need to worry about that.
Dog friendly?
Sorry, but our furry friends are not allowed on the beach during the summer months (November – March), except for Clifton 1st. They deserve some beach fun too!
Nearby cocktail spot:
Looking for a refreshing drink? Head down Victoria Road towards Camps Bay and indulge in the laidback beats and seafood menu at The Bungalow. It’s the perfect spot to unwind.
Beta Beach: A Hidden Gem in Bakoven
By Robbie Kirkpatrick
Hey there! Let’s dive into the captivating world of Bakoven, where you’ll discover two stunning coves. Now, if you take a little detour to the right of the main beach, you’ll stumble upon the enchanting Beta Beach. This hidden haven boasts a small, secluded shoreline adorned with granite rocks. It’s a favorite gathering spot for families, couples, influencers (sigh), and groups of friends seeking a slice of paradise. And did I mention it’s a popular location for photo shoots? So, if you’re looking to snap some Instagram-worthy shots, you’ve come to the right place.
At Beta Beach, the waves are nothing to write home about. But fear not! The absence of waves means the water is calm, perfect for various water activities like snorkeling, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. You can even take a relaxing dip in the tranquil, still waters. It’s absolute bliss, especially when the dreaded southeasterly wind starts to blow. And to make things even more exciting, wait until you see the hidden treasures nestled amongst the rocks. The shady rock pools in the morning may give you an invigorating chill, but as the day progresses, they offer a refreshing escape from the summer heat.
Parking: There isn’t much parking available, but you can conveniently access the beach via the Bakoven or Barley Bay bus stops. Hop on a MyCity bus and you’ll be there in no time.
Toilets: You’ll be pleased to know that there are toilet facilities available at Beta Beach. Convenience is key!
Dog friendly? Unfortunately, our furry friends will have to sit this one out. Beta Beach is not a dog-friendly spot.
Nearby Dining: After a fun-filled day at the beach, head over to Bootlegger on Victoria Road for a delicious breakfast, a satisfying lunch, a refreshing glass of freshly squeezed juice, or a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. Satisfaction guaranteed!
Boulders: A Beach Oasis
Welcome to Boulders, a beach that boasts a rich and iconic history, filled with treasured memories for countless local families. As I step onto the sand, I can’t help but feel a sense of wonder and adventure. I’m not alone in this sentiment – families, couples, and tourists alike flock to this oasis nestled among towering boulders.
First and foremost, Boulders is the beloved dwelling place of the incredible African penguins, some of the last remaining on Earth. These adorable creatures demand our respect, not only because they have the power to nip at our toes, but also because of their endangered status. We have the privilege of sharing this space with them, so let’s be mindful of their presence.
One of the alluring qualities of Boulders is its calm and inviting waters. As I immerse myself in the gentle waves, I am reminded of the simple joys that only nature can provide. The temperature of the water is pleasantly warm, a delightful rarity in the coastal city of Cape Town. Whether you are an experienced swimmer or just love splashing around, this beach is the epitome of aquatic bliss.
What fascinates me about Boulders is its ingenious design. The beach is ingeniously tucked between majestic boulders, providing a natural shield from the wind. It’s no wonder the penguins have taken a liking to this hidden gem. This clever positioning makes Boulders an ideal beach destination, shielding visitors from the elements and ensuring a serene experience.
While Boulders is a place of tranquility, it is essential to note that it is part of the Table Mountain National Park. To maintain this pristine environment and prevent overcrowding, there is an entry fee and a restriction on the number of visitors allowed. These measures ensure that each guest has ample space to relax and unwind.
Arriving early is key if you wish to secure your own personal patch of sand. The beach at Boulders is not vast, and depending on the tides, it can even shrink in size. So, if you have a favorite spot in mind, it’s best to arrive promptly and stake your claim.
Now that I’ve covered the essentials, here are some practical details for your visit. Boulders is open from 7 am to 7:30 pm in December and January, 8 am to 6:30 pm in February and March, and 8 am to 5 pm from April onwards. The cost of entry is R45 for South African adults and R25 for South African children. As for parking, there is limited space available, so it’s wise to arrive early to secure a spot. Restrooms are conveniently provided for your comfort.
Unfortunately, furry friends are not allowed at Boulders, as it is not a dog-friendly beach. However, fear not, for nearby, the Boulders Bites café sits just beside the parking lot. Here, you can treat yourself to delightful soft-serve cones, piping hot coffee, and delicious bagels and flatbreads. Not to mention, the café is brimming with penguin-themed merchandise, making it a perfect spot to commemorate your visit.
Boulders offers an enchanting experience for all who venture to its shores. So, grab your sunscreen, pack your towel, and embark on an unforgettable journey to this beloved beach oasis.
Welcome to Fish Hoek Beach!
Fish Hoek Beach is one of Cape Town’s hidden gems that often goes unnoticed. Not many people know about it, but once you discover its charm, you’ll keep coming back for more. The water here is warm and perfect for swimming, providing a refreshing escape from the heat. With its spacious shoreline, excellent facilities, and ample parking, it’s an ideal destination for all ages.
One of the unique features of Fish Hoek Beach is its diverse crowd. You’ll see everyone from young children to retirees enjoying the sand and surf. Early morning visits to the beach are particularly special, as the sunrise swimmers – affectionately called the “golden-oldies” – make their appearance, adding a touch of nostalgia to the experience.
What sets Fish Hoek Beach apart is that it actually offers two beaches in one. In addition to the main beach, you’ll find the quieter and more secluded Clovelly Beach nestled in a corner. Whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely stroll, playing beach games, building sandcastles, or trying out water sports, this beach has it all.
For those seeking a bit of adventure, take a walk along Jager’s Walk on the mountain side. There, you’ll find rocky areas where you can bask in the sun or, if you’re feeling brave and confident in your swimming skills, take a plunge into the inviting water.

Water’s Edge: A Hidden Gem by the Sea
Here’s a little secret that not everyone knows about – Water’s Edge in Simon’s Town. Tucked away from the usual tourist spots, it’s a favorite among locals, although it can get busy at times. To find it, just follow the paved pathway that starts at the Seaforth Beach parking lot and leads you behind the restaurant. Water’s Edge is a paradise not just for families, but also for divers and snorkelers. The calm waters and abundant marine life make it a haven for underwater adventures.

Unfortunately, pets are not allowed at Water’s Edge, so you’ll have to leave your furry friends at home for this visit.

You won’t be disappointed by the colorful row of beach huts that make for the perfect backdrop to your beach selfies. If you’re into dog-watching and surfing, the Kommetjie side is perfect for you. It’s one of Cape Town’s top surf spots, so you can catch some awesome waves when the southeaster wind is blowing. Plus, you’ll get to see the dogs having a blast on the beach.
The water here is absolutely stunning, but fair warning, it’s pretty chilly for swimming. So, if you’re up for a nice stroll, you can walk eight kilometers all the way to beautiful Noordhoek. Blouberg has two popular beaches, and both of them offer a stunning view of Table Mountain. One of them is called Small Bay, or Kleinbaai. If you’re looking for a fun day out with the family, this is the beach for you! The sand is soft and perfect for building sandcastles, and there’s even a jungle gym with a slide. Plus, there’s a grassy area where you can have a barbecue. It’s like a little piece of paradise!
Oh, and guess what? I know the perfect spot to access Small Bay. Head over to Pelegrini Street and you’ll find a park with wide steps leading down to the beach. The waters here are nice and calm, so it’s great for swimming on those days when the wind isn’t too strong.
Now, let’s talk logistics. Is there parking? Yes, there is! And don’t worry about finding a restroom because there are toilets too. Just keep in mind that dogs are not allowed on this beach, so you’ll have to leave your furry friends at home.
After a day at the beach, you might be craving a delicious treat. Well, I’ve got just the thing for you. Head over to Ons Huise cul de sac in Stadler Road and you’ll find a soft-serve kombi where you can get your hands on some mouthwatering ice cream. Yum!
