This social club is a breath of fresh air in downtown Cape Town, combining elegance with an edgy vibe.
Picturesque velvet-covered bucket chairs, polished herringbone wooden floors adorned with layers of Persian carpets, and leather booths with French rattan screens create a captivating atmosphere. The marble tabletops with mint-colored legs add a touch of sophistication. Additionally, one of the rooms features a hand-painted mural by artist David Brits, showcasing men riding penny-farthings. The Athletic Club & Social, which opened on December 14th, 2018, truly captures a whimsical blend of modern and colonial-inspired design.
The club underwent extensive renovations to transform a historic building into a sophisticated gathering spot. The result is an inviting space where dreams come to life. Not only are the interiors visually stunning, but the food and service surpass expectations. The Athletic Club & Social goes above and beyond to ensure a remarkable experience, all without requiring a membership card.
The Origin Story
Have you ever wondered, like I did, how a social club on Buitengracht Street ended up being associated with athletics?
Well, let me tell you about it. Back in 1900, the building was owned by a pharmacist named Herbert Tothill. He was not only passionate about sports but also loved to bring people together. So, he transformed this building into a place where athletes of all races could gather and enjoy a drink or two.
In those days, the basement of the building was transformed into an underground speakeasy. It was a haven where people from different backgrounds could socialize freely, even during apartheid, without the fear of being arrested for violating the Group Areas Act.
When you step foot inside the building, you can feel its rich history. Vintage cabinets proudly display the trophies won by sports stars of the past. Framed newspaper clippings immortalize the names and achievements of those who frequented this institution. And the walls are adorned with vintage sports equipment and memorabilia, giving you a glimpse into the glorious past.
Open to All
When you step into the three-story building, you’ll find yourself in a world of hidden corners, each one filled with its own special charm. The first floor is where you’ll find a cozy restaurant, inviting you to sit down and enjoy a delicious meal. As you make your way downstairs, you’ll come across another bar, carefully designed to provide intimate seating areas with its cleverly arranged chairs and stools.
When I walk up the stairs to the first floor, a little breathless from the climb, I can’t help but smile. This floor is my absolute favorite. As I reach the top, there’s a bar waiting for me, ready to quench my thirst after all those steps. And let me tell you, climbing stairs always makes me incredibly thirsty!
Once I’ve had a refreshing drink, I’m ready to explore the wonders that await me on this floor. It’s like stepping into a magical world of luxury and opulence. The rooms here are like a maze, each one more extravagant than the last. It’s impossible not to be amazed at the sheer beauty and grandeur of it all.
But it’s not just the rooms that make this floor so special. At the front of the building, there’s a balcony that offers breathtaking views of Signal Hill. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the beauty of the surroundings. I can already picture myself spending countless summer days on that balcony, enjoying the view and basking in the warmth of the sun.
