The 9 Best Wine Farms in Plettenberg Bay

The 9 Must-Visit Wine Farms in Plettenberg Bay

Guess what? In the beautiful town of Plettenberg Bay, there are nine incredible wine farms that you absolutely have to visit. These farms produce some of the most amazing cool-climate wines in the entire country!

Picture this: you hop in your car and take a short drive in any direction from Plettenberg Bay. Before you know it, you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes. From lush forests to stunning Tsitsikamma mountain views, rolling farmland, and exquisite fynbos, the countryside is truly a sight to behold. And in the midst of all this beauty, you’ll find vineyards that have been flourishing for the past two decades. These vineyards produce a limited amount of cool-climate wines, making Plettenberg Bay the smallest “wine of origin” region in South Africa.

Now, let me introduce you to a visionary farmer named Peter Thorpe. About 22 years ago, he planted the first sauvignon blanc vines on Bramon Wine Estate. You know what inspired him? Peter noticed that the climate in the Garden Route region of South Africa was remarkably similar to the winegrowing regions in New Zealand. Can you believe that? Up until that point, no one had ever imagined growing wine so far east of the Cape’s traditional winegrowing areas.

In 2006, Plett became recognized as a wine region, with vineyards spanning from Harkerville to The Crags. These areas are famous for their refreshing sea breezes and natural forests. Over time, there have been various small vineyards that have opened and closed. They mainly focused on producing white wines and offered cozy tastings and farm-style lunches in their charming cellars. Some of their vintages are so unique that you can only find them in Plett. This means that if you visit the region and explore its wine route, you not only get to experience its beauty, but also have the practical benefit of discovering rare and exclusive wines that are only available in the area.

Let me tell you about something really cool in this region that I found interesting. The people here are totally into Méthode Cap Classique, which is like South Africa’s own sparkling wine. Every year, they have this Wine & Bubbly Festival in March, and it’s a big deal. You can actually go to the festival and check it out for yourself if you want. But anyway, besides that, there’s this place called De Villo Boutique Wine that’s not open to the public. It’s run by Olof and Marlita de Villiers, and they make this Merlot that’s supposed to be really good. Apparently, they started making it in 2015, and they have this farm on a hill next to the Keurbooms River. I guess it’s kind of a secret spot.

So, what are your favorite wine farms around here? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Bramon

Something interesting about Bramon is that it all started with just a few hectares of vineyards. They were basically just experimenting at first, but it ended up revolutionizing farming in this area. Now they have over 20 hectares of grapevines that produce a bunch of really amazing wines and bubblies. One of their standout wines is this Méthode Cap Classique made from 100% sauvignon blanc grapes. It’s the first of its kind in South Africa, so that’s pretty special.
The Crags is where Bramon is located. It’s this beautiful area with big mountains all around and some really cool animal sanctuaries nearby. When you go to Bramon, you’ll feel right at home. It’s a really laidback spot where you can relax and enjoy the afternoon. They even have a place for kids and dogs to play while you have some food. You can order mezze platters or get one of their picnic crates from the restaurant. The restaurant is super easy-going – you just tick off what you want and they bring it to you. If you’re lucky, you might even get a table right in the middle of the vineyard.
Oh, and here’s a tip for you: Bramon gets really busy during the peak season from December 10th to January 10th. So, if you’re planning on going then, keep in mind that they might have a time limit of 2.5 hours on table bookings at the restaurant.
Here are the opening times:
Tasting Room: Tuesday – Sunday 11.30am – 5pm
Restaurant: Monday – Sunday, 11am – 5pm
And if you want to get in touch with them, here’s their contact info: 073 833 8183, therestaurant@bramonwines.com
You can find Bramon Wine Estate on N2 in The Crags, Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape.

Welcome to Packwood Wine and Country Estate!

Hey there! Just between you and me, there’s a hidden gem nestled in the tranquil countryside between Plett and Knysna. It’s called Harkerville, and although it may seem like a sleepy little town, it holds a special place called Packwood Wine and Country Estate. Let me give you a sneak peek at what you can expect when you visit.

As you make your way along Fisanthoek Road, you’ll be greeted by stunning panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see. On one side, you’ll be treated to majestic mountains, deep gorges, and even a glimpse of the sparkling ocean in the distance. And as you look to the north, you’ll be enchanted by the lush indigenous forests that embrace this beautiful estate.

Back in 1997, Pete and Vicky Gent traded England for this slice of paradise and started a Jersey dairy herd from scratch. That’s their main gig, but they also have a little something extra up their sleeves – garagiste wines. These wines are crafted with love and care from hand-selected grapes, which are grown sustainably in the nutrient-rich soils. You won’t believe the flavors they manage to capture in each bottle!

Now, let me tell you a bit about their wine journey. Pete and Vicky looked around and couldn’t help but wonder why there weren’t vineyards everywhere. I mean, the climate was just perfect! So they teamed up with the experts at Vinpro and found the ideal spot to plant their vines. From their small vineyard, they produce a range of exquisite wines, including cap classique, pinot noir, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc. It’s a wine lover’s heaven!

But visiting Packwood Wine and Country Estate is not just about the wine. It’s an experience for all the senses. Take a deep breath of fresh country air and soak in the jaw-dropping views as you explore the farm. And when hunger strikes, indulge in a farm-fresh lunch that will leave your taste buds dancing with joy. Picture soft, delicately flavored cheeses, crusty bread, and an array of chutneys and dips – simply divine!

Before you go, here’s some useful info. If you’re looking for a private function venue, Packwood Wine and Country Estate can accommodate up to 26 people in their charming lunch area. It’s the perfect spot for a micro-wedding or any special celebration. Oh, and if you want to extend your visit, they even have a cozy farm cottage available for rent.

When it comes to opening times, Packwood Wine and Country Estate is open to welcome you on Tuesdays to Fridays from 9am to 5pm, and on Saturdays and public holidays from 10am to 3pm. To get in touch, you can reach Pete and Vicky at 078 244 9400 or 083 999 9521, or shoot them an email at vicky@packwood.co.za.

Plettenvale Wine Estate has a range of fantastic wines to offer. They’ve won awards for their brut rosé MCC, and also craft a refreshing dry rosé, a delightful unwooded chardonnay, and a smooth red made from syrah grapes grown on the highest part of the estate.
