The Pioneer Bird Hide is a great spot to visit. It overlooks a long dam with the same name, and only eight vehicles are allowed at a time, so it’s peaceful and quiet.

The closest rest camp to the Pioneer Bird Hide is Mopani Rest Camp. You can also stay at the satellite camps of Boulders Bushveld Camp and Tsendze Rustic Campsite. If you’re staying at Shimuwini Bushveld Camp, you can also access the hide from there.

To get to the Pioneer Bird Hide, follow the signs and directions provided by the park. Remember to drive safely and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way.

When you’re at Mopani, simply follow the paved road for 1.5km and take a right onto the H1-6. After another 2.5km, make another right onto the S142 and follow it for 1.5km. At the signpost, make a right turn and continue for another 2km on a narrow dirt road. It’s worth noting that this road is not suitable for caravans or buses.

2. Shipandani Overnight Hide

To get to Shipandani, you need to follow the tarred road from Mopani for 1.5km. Then, turn right onto the H1-6. After 2.5km, turn right onto the S142 and continue for 1.5km. You’ll see the hide on your right, just after crossing the Tsendze River.

If you’re in Satara, just follow the paved road until you reach a T-junction. Take a right turn onto the H1-3. Drive for about 5 kilometers, then make a left onto the H6. Stay on this road for around 20 kilometers. When you’re close to the end, keep an eye out for a sign that points you to the right onto the S37. After a 2.5-kilometer stretch of dirt road, you’ll find yourself at Sweni Bird Hide.

4. Lake Panic

One of the most well-known spots in the park is Lake Panic Hide, which gave me a much-needed break during my visit. It’s situated in a popular area, so they only allow eight cars at a time. If you’re coming from Lower Sabie, simply follow the H4-2 road south for 5.5 kilometers and then take a left onto the S28 road, which is well-known for its excellent game viewing. After traveling for another 6.5 kilometers, you will come across the turnoff to Ntandanyathi on your left.

If you’re starting from Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp, head north on the H4-2 road for approximately 5 kilometers, and then make a right turn onto the S28 road. Continue along this road for about 20 kilometers until you see the signage directing you to Ntandanyathi, where you can turn right.
