The 20 Best Italian Restaurants in Cape Town

Hey there! I gotta tell you about the most amazing Italian restaurants in Cape Town. They’re seriously top-notch and will make your taste buds do a happy dance!

Italian food is just incredible. I mean, who can resist those mouthwatering dishes like melanzane, tiramisu, pizza, and pasta? They’re absolutely delicious and leave you feeling completely satisfied.

Now, when it comes to Italian restaurants in Cape Town, you’ve got a lot of options. Whether you’re in the mood for a cozy, family-style trattoria, a trendy spot that serves the most tantalizing small plates and fantastic cocktails, or a charming cafe, you’ll find something perfect for every occasion.

In this article, I’ll be sharing my favorite Italian restaurants that offer more than just pizza. Oh, don’t worry, I’ll have a separate list just for pizza places! Have you been to any of these incredible spots? Let me know your favorites in the comments below!

Scala

Now, let me tell you about Scala. This place is pure magic! It’s situated below street level, creating this amazing atmospheric vibe. The chef, Luciano Monosilio, is a superstar from Rome. He’s not just any chef though, he’s actually one of the youngest Italian chefs to ever receive a Michelin star, and he got it when he was just 27! Impressive, right?

Here at Scala, they take pasta to a whole new level. The pasta dishes are served as sharing plates, and they’re made in-house using three different types of dough. Yes, you heard me right, dough! They use semolina, egg, and white 00 flour to create these incredible pastas. And the sauces? They’re out of this world! You’ll find all sorts of delicious toppings like seafood, chicken, meat, and cheese.

But that’s not all! Scala also brings the aperitivo culture to Cape Town. What’s that, you ask? Well, it’s all about cocktails, spritzes, and bite-sized snacks. You can enjoy these delightful treats every day from 4pm until dinner. No wonder Scala recently received Two Forks from Gambero Rosso International. They totally deserve it!

Good to know: If you’re gluten-free, no worries! Scala offers gluten-free pasta.
Opening times: Monday – Sunday, 12pm – 10.30pm
Contact: Give them a call at 021 424 7204 or send an email to capetown@scalapasta.co.za
You can find Scala at: 81 Church Street, Heritage Square, Cape Town CBD

Welcome to LOCO

Benvenuto to the latest Italian addition on Kloof Street. I’m Luca Toni, the chef behind this charming trattoria. Originally from Bologna, I bring with me the rich culinary heritage of my hometown, along with my years of experience at Assaggi in Joburg. Here at LOCO, we aim to create an authentic and unpretentious family dining experience, serving up delicious antipasti, mouthwatering pastas, hearty meat dishes, and indulgent desserts.

At LOCO, we believe in the beauty of simplicity. That’s why we take pride in making all our fresh pasta in-house. Our menu features a tempting array of dishes, but the real showstopper is our sumptuous lasagne with asparagus and brie. Trust me, it’s a flavor explosion! If you’re in the mood for something different, our tagliatelle with fillet and mushrooms is a worthy contender.

But that’s not all. We also have a wood-fired pizza oven, which will definitely make your decision-making process a little more challenging. And don’t forget to save room for dessert! Our tiramisu and crème brûlée will transport you straight to dessert heaven.

The Cousins Trattoria

In 2012, we, Simone, Luca, and Andrea, realized that our adopted city was missing a genuine Italian restaurant. This inspired us to open The Cousins Trattoria. Our cozy little slice of Romagna in the heart of the East City has been serving up authentic Italian cuisine ever since.

Each morning, we prepare our pasta from scratch, using recipes passed down from our nonna. It’s a taste of tradition you won’t find anywhere else. Our dishes are a true feast for your taste buds. From Cesenatico-style lasagne to tagliatelle with an authentic bolognese sauce, and potato gnocchi with gorgonzola, every plate is bursting with flavor.

If you’re looking for a bit of excitement, try our Cousins pasta. We make it right at your table, tossing tagliolini with cream, mushrooms, and thyme in a giant Grana Padano cheese wheel. It’s a show-stopping experience you won’t forget.

And don’t forget to save some room for dessert. We offer vodka-infused sorbet and an excellent affogato. And if you need a little help digesting, a limoncello will do the trick.

Opening times: Monday – Sunday, 6pm – 10pm

Welcome to Limoncello!

Imagine sitting under the cool shade of ancient milkwood trees, surrounded by breathtaking views of the ocean and mountains. That’s the experience you’ll find at Limoncello, the reinvented Italian restaurant in Noordhoek. This place holds a special place in my heart because it’s the revival of Luca and Cecilia Castiglione’s beloved ristorante, which sadly closed its doors in 2012. But now, it’s back and better than ever!

When you step into Limoncello, you’ll immediately notice the warm and welcoming atmosphere, just like the original eatery in Gardens. It’s a place that feels like home, where you can enjoy mouthwatering cuisine from Luca’s hometown in Naples. But that’s not all – Limoncello also embraces the unique character of Noordhoek, infusing a breezy vibe into the dining experience. You can even spot a tree growing inside the dining room, letting in the natural light that adds to the charm.

Luca’s specialty is seafood, so you can expect a delectable array of fresh catches, straight from the local fishermen’s nets. I highly recommend checking out the chalkboard special menu, where you’ll discover the catch of the day. And if you’re a fan of classic Italian dishes, you won’t be disappointed. Indulge in the velvety melanzane alla Parmigiana or savor the flavors of the risotto with roast peppers and stracciatella cheese. Every dish is cooked with love and patience, ensuring that each bite is worth the wait.

Now, let’s talk about the pizzas – the stars of the show! Limoncello offers a tempting selection of wood-fired thin-based pizzas. These delicious pies are topped with mozzarella from Puglia Cheese, providing the perfect balance of flavors and textures. Whether you’re a traditionalist or an adventurous eater, you’ll find a pizza that suits your taste.

Before you wrap up your meal, be sure to savor a shot of Luca’s homemade limoncello. It’s the perfect way to end your dining experience at Limoncello, leaving you with a burst of citrusy delight. Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on this special treat!

Now, let’s get down to logistics:

We are open from Tuesday to Thursday, welcoming you from 5pm to 10pm. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, we open at 12pm, and our doors stay open until 10pm. Feel free to drop by anytime during these hours – we can’t wait to serve you!

Carne on Kloof

Hey there, meat lovers! I’ve got something exciting for you – Carne on Kloof! Prepare yourself for an unforgettable dining experience, where quality is our top priority. Giorgio Nava, the mastermind behind Carne, firmly believes in sticking to what works. That’s why you’ll find all your beloved dishes at both our Kloof Street and Keerom locations!

Picture this: authentic Milanese cuisine that revolves around one thing – meat! Yes, my friend, “carne” means meat in Italian, and we’ve got the best cuts in town. We source our beef, lamb, and game from pasture-raised animals, ensuring superior flavor and tenderness. But here’s the kicker – we encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and try some of the lesser-known cuts like the spider steak, hanger steak, and flat-iron steak. Don’t miss out on the magic they bring to the table!

Now, let’s talk about our starters. We’ve got some old-school classics that will leave you wanting more. How about some mouthwatering lamb or butternut ravioli? Or maybe you’re in the mood for gnocchi alla gorgonzola? And for the adventurous souls out there, we’ve got pan-fried sweetbreads in a heavenly white wine, butter, and sage sauce. Trust me, it’s a flavor explosion!

But wait, there’s more! After indulging in our delectable meaty creations, make sure you save room for our pièce de résistance – the fondente al cioccolato. This divine dessert features a luscious liquid chocolate center that will transport you to chocolate heaven. Fun fact: Giorgio introduced this culinary gem to Cape Town two decades ago, and it’s been a local favorite ever since!

Okay, here’s a little insider tip for you – both Carne on Kloof and Carne on Keerom offer the same outstanding menu. So, you can’t go wrong no matter which location you choose!

Just remember our opening times: Monday to Thursday, 6pm to 10pm, and Friday to Saturday, 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to 10pm. If you want to make a reservation or have any questions, give us a call at 021 426 5566 or drop us an email at carnekloof@carne-sa.com.

And the interior? Oh, it’s cozy and charming, adorned with beautiful Italian-style murals and old family photos. This place has been a part of Sea Point for a long time, becoming a true institution.

So, how did it all start? Well, it’s actually a beautiful story of friendship and family traditions. Back in 1998, two childhood friends, Gioacchino (Jack) Gasparre and Enrico (Eric) de Siena, decided to take over this restaurant. They wanted to bring it to life with the amazing recipes passed down from their mothers, who come from the southern regions of Italy, Bari and Naples. Talk about authentic flavors!

Oh, and there’s one more thing you shouldn’t miss. They have a special dish from their nonna’s (that’s Italian for grandma) Sunday table. It’s called penne al forno. Imagine delicious baked pasta with napolitana sauce and meatballs. It’s a true family favorite, and now you can experience it too.

Are you wondering when you can visit? Posticino is open every day, from Monday to Sunday. You can come in for lunch starting at 12:30pm, and they stay open until 10pm. So, whether you’re in the mood for a midday meal or a late dinner, they’ve got you covered.

Welcome to Villa 47!

Big changes are happening at one of Cape Town’s most beloved Italian dining spots. I’m here to tell you all about it! Let me start by introducing you to Locanda, the brainchild of Luciano Previtera and Michele Mirotto. Located on the street level, Locanda offers an incredible array of Italian delights. From antipasto platters featuring the finest imported hams, salamis, and cheeses, to mouthwatering classic pastas, and even saltimbocca, fritto misto, and sirloin steak with truffle sauce – Locanda has something for everyone!

But wait, there’s more! Take a trip up to the first floor and you’ll find Martini Terrazza Lounge. This stylish cocktail lounge is a fusion of sophistication and taste. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy aperitivo-style entertainment, just like the Italians do.

Now, let me give you a heads-up on some important details. Did you know that breakfast is served until 11.30am? So, if you’re an early bird, Villa 47 has got you covered. And when it comes to opening times, you can visit Monday through Friday, from 7am to 10pm, and on Saturdays, from 8.30am to 10pm.

The 20 Best Italian Restaurants in Cape Town

I took over this charming little spot back in June 2017, along with Maurizio Carlo. We both have Italian roots, and we wanted to bring a taste of our heritage to Cape Town. So, we decided to share the recipes we learned from our nonnas and create a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. Since then, we’ve moved locations, but we’ve managed to keep that same warm and inviting feeling that our customers love so much.

Now, let me tell you about our amazing slow-cooked lamb dishes. They’re legendary around here. You have to try our fettuccine al ragu di agnello or the lamb-and-crème-fraîche pizza. The portions are generous, and the homemade pasta is to die for. We also have delicious vegetarian options like the mushroom-and-artichoke ravioli with mascarpone and walnut sauce. It’s a favorite among our regulars.

We’re open every day from 12pm to 10pm, so you can drop by whenever you’re in the mood for some good food. If you have any questions or want to make a reservation, feel free to give us a call at 063 710 4742 or send us an email at info@thewoodlandseatery.com. You can find us at 8 Breda Street, Oranjezicht.
