So, which country kitchens do you love? Share your favorites with us in the comments below. We can’t wait to hear from you.
My experience at Muratie Wine Estate was a delectable journey into the heart of farm hospitality. The tradition of warm welcomes and delicious Karoo cuisine started with Tannie Annatjie, the mother of owner Rijk Melck, who used to serve mouthwatering dishes in the manor house. Now, Chef Riaan van Schalkwyk carries on this legacy with his beautifully executed and simply delightful creations.
When you visit, make sure to indulge in the bobotie samoosas, potato gnocchi, lamb shank, pan-roasted venison, and sirloin. These scrumptious dishes are served with vegetables picked straight from the garden, adding a fresh and flavorful touch. And if you have room for dessert, don’t miss the Baked Camembert paired with chardonnay-poached pears – a rare treat that will leave you wanting more.
But it’s not just lunch or dinner that Muratie excels in. The estate is also known for its legendary farm breakfasts. After a refreshing run on the Simonsberg trails, recharge your energy with a hearty meal of avocado and poached eggs. It’s the perfect way to start your day and leave you ready to take on whatever adventures lie ahead.
When planning your visit, keep in mind that Muratie Wine Estate is open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 9am to 3.30pm. Be sure to arrive early so you have plenty of time to savor every bite. And if you have any questions or want to make a reservation, you can contact them at 021 865 2330 or email info@muratie.co.za.
Finding Muratie Wine Estate is easy – it’s located off Knorhoek Road in Koelenhof, Stellenbosch. Allow yourself to be enchanted by the beauty and flavors of this remarkable place. Fire
Fire. It’s a fascinating and powerful force of nature. You’ve probably seen it before, whether in a campfire or a fireplace. But have you ever really thought about the significance of fire in our lives? Fire has been around for thousands of years and has played a crucial role in our development as a species. From providing warmth and light to cooking food and keeping predators at bay, fire has been an indispensable part of human existence.
But fire is more than just a tool or a survival mechanism. Fire has a symbolic meaning that goes beyond its physical properties. It represents transformation, passion, and renewal. When I think of fire, I imagine the mesmerizing dance of the flames, the crackling sound that fills the air, and the warmth that engulfs me. Fire has a way of captivating our senses and invoking a sense of awe and wonder.
Fire can be both a blessing and a curse. It has the power to destroy, to devour everything in its path. Think of wildfires and the devastation they can cause. But fire also has the power to create, to bring new life. Forest fires, for example, clear the way for new growth and regeneration. Fire has the ability to shape and transform the landscapes around us.
So, next time you see a fire, take a moment to appreciate its beauty and power. Think about the role it has played in our lives, from the earliest days of human existence to the present day. Fire is more than just a source of warmth and light. It is a symbol of our ingenuity, our ability to tame and control the natural elements. Fire is a reminder of our connection to nature and the powerful forces that shape our world. Embrace the fire within you and let it inspire you to be passionate, bold, and transformative. You have the power to ignite change and make a difference in the world.
When you dine at Vuur, something magical happens. It’s not just a regular barbecue – it’s an experience filled with tasty food, interesting flavors, friendly conversations, and fresh country air. And to top it all off, you get to enjoy it alongside the amazing wines from Remhoogte.
Shaun Scrooby has created a truly special restaurant out of an old stable. At Vuur, you can choose to sit at the long oak-shaded table outside, which can accommodate 12 people, or in the cozy seating area for 10 guests inside. No matter where you sit, you’ll have a front-row seat to the fire-cooking action happening on the traditional open hearth in the kitchen.
What sets Vuur apart is that they go above and beyond simple barbecue cooking. They smoke, steam, sear, and then beautifully plate each dish with care. Every week, they create a seven-course feast that changes, so you’ll never have the same experience twice. From unique meats like warthog sausage, ostrich steaks, and Karoo lamb chops, to flavorful vegetables like smoked leeks or prawns with roasted Clemengolds, and even the classic South African snack, the braaibroodjie – Vuur offers a culinary adventure you won’t find anywhere else. And don’t forget, even the G&Ts are tantalizingly smoked, and the desserts have their own kiss of fire.
Normally, Vuur is reserved for private groups with a minimum of four people. However, they do host a shared table dinner once a month, which is open for individual bookings.
If you want to experience the magic of Vuur, they are open from Monday to Saturday, starting at 1pm. To make a reservation or for more information, you can reach them at 083 600 4050 (WhatsApp) or email mytable@vuurrestaurant.com.

When Farro first appeared on Cape Town’s bustling Bree Street, it brought with it the charm of a nighttime bistro transformed into a daytime café known as Café Frank. However, the founders, Alex and Eloise Windebank, dreamed of finding a permanent home for their culinary adventure. And that’s exactly what they discovered at Gabriëlskloof wine farm in the beautiful Overberg region.
Situated in a picturesque spot overlooking the tranquil inner courtyard of the estate, Farro’s new daytime restaurant provides a modern ambiance. Here, chef Alex works his magic, crafting mouthwatering creations that make use of the abundance of local produce. And when it comes to flavor, he doesn’t hold back, freely incorporating ingredients like butter, cream, and wine.
Among the standout dishes that have become Farro’s signature offerings are the velvety rich duck-liver parfait and the melt-in-the-mouth pork belly. But that’s not all – Alex has also introduced delectable additions to the menu, such as Karoo wagyu steak, Elgin trout, and freshly picked delights from the farm’s own gardens.
If you’re planning a visit, take note of their opening times: they’re open every day from Monday to Sunday, between 11.30am and 4pm. And if you have any questions or want to make a reservation, you can contact them at 028 284 9865 or hello@farrofoodandwine.com.

My Take on Geuwels
Geuwels is an intriguing and rather peculiar phenomenon. When I first came across the concept, I couldn’t help but be captivated by its distinctive nature.
So, what exactly is Geuwels? Well, it’s not something you come across every day. Geuwels is a term coined to describe the feeling you get when you uncover something unexpectedly delightful or amusing. It’s that warm and fuzzy sensation that tickles your soul and brings a smile to your face.
Imagine stumbling upon a video of adorable animals doing funny tricks or witnessing a child’s contagious laughter. That joyous and heartwarming feeling you experience in those moments can be described as Geuwels.
Geuwels is like stumbling upon a hidden treasure, just waiting to be discovered. It’s that little burst of happiness that brightens your day and reminds you of the beauty in the world.
However, Geuwels can be elusive. It’s not something you can actively seek out; it simply happens when you least expect it. It’s like a delightful surprise that catches you off guard and makes you appreciate the simple pleasures in life.
But here’s the thing about Geuwels – it’s contagious. Once you’ve experienced this feeling, you start to become more attuned to the little moments of joy around you. You begin to notice the beauty in everyday things and find delight in the smallest of gestures.
So, my advice to you is this: embrace the concept of Geuwels. Keep your heart and mind open to the unexpected moments of delight that life has to offer. Because you never know when a little burst of happiness might come your way.
Next time you stumble upon a heartwarming video or witness a child’s laughter, remember the term Geuwels. Let it serve as a reminder of the magic and joy that can be found in the simplest of things.
The Story of Vergenoegd Löw’s Foodie Haven
Have you heard about Vergenoegd Löw? It’s a place known for its flock of Indian runner ducks, but there’s so much more to discover. This hidden gem is now a must-visit foodie destination, thanks to chef Bertus Basson’s Winelands culinary empire.
One of the highlights at Vergenoegd Löw is Geuwels. This restaurant is located in a beautifully restored cellar that oozes historic charm. As soon as you step inside, you’ll be captivated by its exquisite interiors.
At Geuwels, you can expect a heartwarming menu of South African-inspired dishes. The best part? It’s a place that welcomes the whole family. In the morning, you can enjoy a breakfast that will leave you craving more. Imagine savouring smoked pork belly, organic maize, lamb sausage, a jaffle croque-madame, and duck eggs fresh from the farm.
Lunchtime is a treat at Geuwels. They offer a two-course menu of eight sharing plates, each one more delicious than the next. The must-try starter is the heavenly Bovril-and-biltong butter with roosterkoek (griddle cakes). And for dessert, they serve a pavlova that will bring back sweet memories.
But that’s not all. On the same estate, you’ll find Clara’s Barn, where they serve a more formal five-course set menu.
If you’re wondering about the opening times, Geuwels is open from Tuesday to Sunday, between 8 am and 3.30 pm. For reservations or any inquiries, you can reach them at 021 202 4373 or geuwels@vergenoegd.co.za.
