The Gin Bar: A Hidden Gem Behind a Chocolate Shop
You know what makes a great gin bar? A great story. And let me tell you, this one is quite the interesting tale. Tucked away behind a chocolate shop, this inner-city gem is housed in an old heritage building – a mortuary, to be precise. But don’t worry, it’s not spooky at all. In fact, the history of the place adds a special touch to both the drinks menu and the stylish interiors.
Now, let’s talk about the drinks. You have a choice of two cozy spots to sit back and relax: the Chapel Room or the delightful courtyard. It’s up to you. Once you’re settled, you’ll want to explore their impressive selection of five “medicinal” remedies, better known as cocktails. These concoctions are guaranteed to lift your spirits and make you feel fantastic.
If cocktails aren’t your thing, fear not! The Gin Bar has got you covered with over 100 gins to choose from. And the best part? Around 80 of them are locally sourced and crafted with love. Now that’s what I call supporting local businesses!
And hey, I get it. Gin might not be everyone’s cup of tea. So for the non-gin enthusiasts out there, they also have wine and beer on offer. But wait, there’s more. Hidden away in a discreet corner, you’ll find the Bubbly Bar. This charming space used to be the Embalming Room. Now, it showcases some of the finest local cap classiques, including bottles from small, lesser-known producers. It’s an opportunity to try something different and discover a new favorite sip.

Welcome to Tjing Tjing Rooftop Bar!
This building has been around for over 200 years, and it holds some incredible surprises and spaces. I invite you to head up to the third floor – the attic – where you’ll discover a hidden-gem rooftop bar. It’s a wonderful place to socialize and enjoy the cool beats of electro-indie music. Hey there! Are you curious about The Holy Spirit? Well, let me tell you all about it! This awesome place used to be called WeCafé, but now it’s been transformed into a vodka bar that celebrates the owner’s heritage. They’ve got the best potato and grain spirits from Poland, Ukraine, Russia, and more. How cool is that?
When you step inside, get ready for a cozy and friendly atmosphere. You can settle in for a fun cocktail session and try their modern fusion bites that combine Eastern European and Asian flavors. It’s like a food adventure!
Chef Eugene Volkov is the mastermind behind the menu. He’s taken the vegan options from WeCafé and added even more tasty dishes. You’ve got to try the traditional pancakes, called “blinchiki”, topped with teriyaki beef or spicy shrimp. And if you’re a fan of salmon, you’ll love their gourmet salmon rösti and sliders.
But don’t worry, if you’re looking for plant-based options, they’ve got you covered too. You can try dishes like seaweed caviar, smoked tofu noodles, and black bao. Yum!
Now, let’s talk about the star of the show: the vodka cocktails. The Holy Spirit offers a holy trinity of vodka cocktails that will blow your mind. They’re mixed just right, so get ready for a spirited start to your evening.
Oh, and did I mention they’ve got a beautiful patio with fairy lights? It’s the perfect spot to enjoy those warm summer evenings. And on Sundays, they even have a traditional kebab braai with music and stand-up comedy. How fun is that?
If you’re wondering when you can visit, The Holy Spirit is open from Wednesday to Sunday, starting at 12pm and going until 11pm. On Tuesdays, they open a little later, at 4pm. So, you’ve got plenty of opportunities to experience this unique vodka bar.
If you want to get in touch with them, just give them a call at 066 187 8315 or shoot them an email at hello@holyspirit.co.za. They’ll be happy to help you out.
