Discover the hidden gems of the Breedekloof Valley today.

Imagine embarking on a journey through the Breedekloof Valley, a place that may appear to be just a simple trek at first glance. However, this picturesque valley is much more than meets the eye, hiding a world of wonders just waiting to be discovered. As I make my way out of the Huguenot Tunnel, I am greeted by an awe-inspiring sight reminiscent of a scene from a Tolkien novel. The Worcester Fault, with its towering rock faces, stands proudly on either side, as if guarding the secrets of the valley.

This magnificent formation has undergone countless transformations throughout the ages, slowly crumbling away to give rise to the diverse landscapes of the Breedekloof. Here, you’ll find a fascinating blend of weathered sandstone, alluvial, and granite soils, each with its own story to tell. It is the Breede River, flowing gracefully through the valley, that has played a crucial role in shaping the land. Over time, it has carried sediments from different sources, depositing this rich mixture on the valley floor.

The surrounding mountains also exert their influence, creating unique microclimates that contribute to the distinct character of the region. These majestic peaks encircle the valley, creating a natural barrier that shelters it from the outside world. As night falls, cool air descends from the mountains and settles in the valley, creating a favorable environment for the grapes to thrive. This gradual ripening process allows the grapes to develop complex flavors while retaining their natural acidity.

Most of the estates here belong to families who have been farming in this area for generations. Some have been doing it for as long as eight generations! It’s pretty amazing. And you know what’s even cooler? A bunch of these winemakers have known each other since they were little. Now they’re all grown up and working together in a cool group called Breedekloof Makers. They make these awesome wines, like chenin blanc, which is a fancy way of saying it’s a really good white wine. They also make wines from other kinds of grapes that you might not expect.

The Breedekloof Valley is a special place. It’s all about farming and being in touch with the land. And when you visit, you can feel it. The people here are so friendly and welcoming. They have these cozy tasting rooms where you can try the wines and really get a taste of what the valley is all about. And there are also cute little places to stay, like farm cottages, where you can relax and enjoy the countryside. It’s a great place for a vacation!

So have you ever been to the Breedekloof Valley? If you have, let us know your favorite wineries in the comments below. We’d love to hear from you!

Slanghoek

Opstal Estate

“I make wines from a single vineyard in a simple way to show off the unique flavors of each year,” says Attie Louw. Attie comes from a long line of winemakers, and his family has been farming at Opstal since way back in 1847. Before Attie, the farm was mostly known for making a lot of wine all at once. But he changed that by making really great wines, like the award-winning Carl Everson chenin blanc. He’s also the one who started Breedekloof Makers in 2015. You should visit his beautiful estate and try his delicious wines while taking in the stunning views of the valley. And while you’re there, you can also have a meal at Opstal Eat, which serves tasty country food. They even have cottages where you can stay, and they do weddings, too!
Wine: Carl Everson Chenin Blanc 2020
This wine is made from old vines that were planted a long time ago in 1982. They use a special kind of fermentation that brings out all the amazing flavors of the grapes. When you taste it, you’ll notice flavors like quince, peach, and caramelized pineapple, with a zing of acidity. It’s really good!
