Cape Chardonnay Is All the Rage: Our Top Picks for 2023
By Mareli van Zyl, Jordan Wine Estate
Guess what? Chardonnay is a total winner!
Even though it’s chilly outside and most folks are sipping on bold reds, there’s something truly delightful about curling up by the fire with a glass (or two) of chardonnay on a blustery winter’s night. With International Chardonnay Day just around the corner on May 25th, now is the perfect time to celebrate this fabulous South African wine.
So, what are your go-to chardonnays? We’d love to know, drop a comment below!
Perfect for Any Occasion
When it comes to white grapes, Chardonnay is the reigning queen. Its origins trace back to the Middle Ages, and since then, it has become a global sensation. Unlike its cousin, pinot, Chardonnay is known for its ability to travel well and thrive in diverse environments. From the Kimmeridgian soils of its birthplace to the southernmost tip of Africa, Chardonnay reigns supreme.
Chardonnay has gained fame for producing some of the world’s most exceptional and long-lasting wines. However, its popularity has also given rise to mixed opinions. Critics, known as ABCs or “Anything But Chardonnay,” have expressed dislike for its creamy texture, high alcohol content, and the influence of new oak flavors that winemakers often use.
The grape of choice for winemakers
Do you ever wonder how winemakers bring out the best in Chardonnay? It’s like a secret dance, coaxing out the flavors and creating a beautiful harmony in every bottle. Chardonnay is known as the “winemaker’s grape” because it has a neutral character that can be shaped and framed to perfection. Unlike sauvignon blanc, which bursts with aromatic intensity, Chardonnay is more subtle and needs some care and attention to reveal its true brilliance.
One of the keys to unlocking Chardonnay’s potential lies in the winemaking techniques used. Barrel fermentation and maturation, malolactic conversion, and lees contact can all contribute to the texture and structure of the wine. These techniques can bring out the best in the bright citrus flavors and add a touch of well-judged oak for a balanced and delightful taste.
But that’s not all. Chardonnay has a natural high acidity and a complex character that can continue to develop and evolve over time. As it ages, it becomes more layered and intriguing, with new dimensions of flavor emerging. And where it’s grown matters too. Different climates produce different styles of Chardonnay. In cooler regions, you’ll find crisp, steelier versions with notes of white fruits. As the climate warms, the flavors become more vibrant and tropical, bursting with oranges and other exotic fruits.
So, the next time you sip on a glass of Chardonnay, take a moment to appreciate the winemaker’s skill in crafting this versatile and captivating wine. It’s a testament to their artistry and a true delight for your taste buds.
International Accolades
Wow, have you heard about the amazing recognition that South African chardonnays are getting these days? They used to be underestimated, but not anymore! Recently, Stellenbosch’s Jordan Wine Estate won the prestigious 2022 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) White Wine Producer Trophy for their exceptional Nine Yards Chardonnay 2020. Can you believe they beat all the other international competitors? That’s truly impressive! And that’s not all – earlier this year, the De Wetshof Bateleur Chardonnay 2020 was one of only five South African wines to receive Platinum status at the Decanter Awards. It’s fantastic to see the wine that first introduced chardonnay to Africa receiving such well-deserved recognition.
Early Pioneers
De Wetshof is located in Robertson, a region in Cape with an abundant supply of limestone. These limestone deposits hold sea fossils that the grape enjoys growing on. The journey of De Wetshof is a fascinating one. Frustrated by bureaucracy, Danie de Wet, along with his winemaking friends like Jan Boland Coetzee, took matters into their own hands. They smuggled the first Burgundian clones of chardonnay into the country by stitching plant material into their jacket linings, and hiding them in nappies and chocolate boxes.
Continuing his father’s legacy, Johann de Wet now leads the estate. He speaks passionately about their wines, saying, “While many of our wines can rival those from Burgundy, what sets us apart is a radiant brightness. This brightness allows a plethora of flavors to take center stage, while the wine’s structure and texture create an experience of lasting joy.”
A Moment to Savor
Currently, chenin still dominates our vineyards, and I think it will continue to do so. Chardonnay comes in at number seven. Most people don’t know much about chenin outside of South Africa, but it’s a favorite among trendy wine lists and sommeliers. Critics love our chenin for its unique flavor, but it hasn’t gained the same popularity as our internationally recognized chardonnay.
As the prices of Burgundy wines continue to rise, they’ve become too expensive for many people. That’s where we come in…South Africa offers high-quality wines at a more affordable price. Our chardonnays blend the best of both worlds, combining Old World and New World styles. The result is a sophisticated wine with a touch of our South African sunshine. Trust me, Cape chardonnay is something special!
A dozen powerful chardonnays
Fall head over heels for this wine all over again with our ultimate choices.
De Wetshof Bateleur Chardonnay 2020
This sophisticated wine comes from those original smuggled Burgundian clones planted in 1987. It’s as timeless as fine French linen and just as delicately textured. Unravel layers of white citrus, creamy pears, and fresh green apples, sprinkled with hints of toast and spice from careful aging. The cool, lemony fruit is embraced by delicate, limestone-driven acidity for a refined richness. As you savor it, hazelnut flavors emerge, interlaced with hints of waxy honey, culminating in a satisfying pear-citrus finish. It’s both invigorating and impressively weighty. Get it now
Haute Cabrière Chardonnay Réserve 2021
Hey there! Let me introduce you to Achim von Arnim, the founder of this wonderful family-run estate. He’s like a superhero in the world of chardonnay! Achim, together with his great friend Danie de Wet, did something remarkable. They brought Robertson chardonnay to our beloved Franschhoek and created our very first cap classique. It’s like they opened the door to a whole new world.
Since then, we’ve been experimenting with chardonnay non-stop. We’re always looking for new ways to make it even more amazing. And let me tell you, our HC Chardonnay Pinot Noir blend is nothing short of legendary. It’s a wine that everyone knows and loves.
But guess what? We’ve just released something new and exciting: the Chardonnay Réserve. It’s our very first vintage of this spectacular wine, and it really shows our dedication to the chardonnay grape. It’s a light and refreshing wine, bursting with the flavors of lemon-lime peels, zesty citrus, and grapefruit. And to make it extra special, we’ve aged it in oak barrels for eight months, which adds hints of spice and praline to the mix.

Oldenburg Vineyards Chardonnay 2021
Here’s another impressive wine: the Banhoek chardonnay. It’s so good that it won the Investec International Judges’ Trophy at the 2022 Trophy Wine Show. The grapes for this chardonnay come from the estate, and they grow on special soils at a high altitude of 350 meters. These soils are made up of alluvial and weathered Table Mountain sandstone. The winemakers made sure to hand-sort the bunches and press them in whole clusters to create a chardonnay that truly represents the Stellenbosch region. When you taste this wine, you’ll notice flavors of mandarin, pear, and white peach. The subtle oak notes add complexity and depth to the wine, and it finishes with a refreshing pithy taste that lingers on your palate.

Creation Reserve Chardonnay 2021
When I first tasted Creation’s cool-climate chardonnays, I was blown away. The vineyard’s attention to detail, from planting on virus-free soil to the careful crafting in the cellar, is truly remarkable. Jean-Claude Martin, co-owner, viticulturist, and cellarmaster, knows exactly how to create wines that are balanced, pure, and true to their origins.
Take their single-vineyard barrel-fermented wine, for example. It’s beyond sublime. The first sip reveals a burst of fresh honey, warm cinnamon, and exotic cardamom, all delicately embracing tangy citrus fruit. The sensation is absolutely mouthwatering, thanks to a perfectly balanced line of acidity that keeps you coming back for more.
What sets this chardonnay apart is its ten months of oak maturation on the lees. This process imbues the wine with a touch of creamy butteriness, without overshadowing the pure flavors of apples and pears. And if you pay close attention, you’ll discover a subtle undercurrent of steely flint, adding an intriguing element to the overall experience.
Introducing Thorne & Daughters Copper Pot Chardonnay 2021
I can’t get enough of this chardonnay! It’s like the yin to the yang of a pinot noir with the same name. Cape chardonnay has really taken a modern turn, and this wine exemplifies that. It’s designed for everyday enjoyment, with a lower alcohol content that makes it perfect for unwinding. I would even go so far as to call it “truly fantastic for everyday sipping.” The grapes from the Southern Cape region underwent a natural fermentation process in oak barrels and then aged for nine months in old oak. The result is a wine that captivates the senses with its enticing aromas of crushed seashells, orange blossoms, and thatched roofs. The palate is lively and refreshing, with flavors of juicy pears and summery lemons that make every sip a delight.

Just like its stellar Nine Yards sibling, this wine also won a gold medal at the IWSC 2022. Jordan Estate, located in the Stellenbosch Hills sub-region, has long been known for its commitment to quality through meticulous vineyard practices and winemaking techniques. In crafting this particular wine, different chardonnay clones were carefully selected from various slopes, each harvested at different levels of ripeness. The wine was then fermented and aged in French oak barrels for nine months, with the lees being occasionally rolled for added richness. A touch of tank-fermented chardonnay adds a burst of freshness to the overall creamy texture. The result is a luxurious and aromatic wine that is brimming with notes of citrus.
