Kanonkop: Where Wine and History Collide

What makes Kanonkop stand out from the rest? Its name itself reveals a rich heritage. Named after a powerful 17th-century cannon that boomed across Table Bay, alerting all to the arrival of majestic ships. The estate’s own story is just as captivating – steeped in South Africa’s winemaking legends. Kanonkop’s first vines took root in the late 1930s, and in 1973, they proudly unveiled their inaugural bottle under the Kanonkop label. Fast forward to today, and it’s no wonder that Kanonkop has been celebrated as one of the 50 most admired wine brands in the world by Drinks International for 2022.

Yet, what sets Kanonkop apart is its unassuming charm. Step into their Tasting Room, and you’ll find yourself in a place where wine tasting melds seamlessly with history and culture. It’s more than just a room – it’s a museum and a gift shop, a treasure trove of wine knowledge and mementos.

For an extra special experience, indulge in a private tutored tasting within the art gallery of the maturation cellar. Gather your closest friends or colleagues on a weekday, and let the serene Simonsberg Mountains backdrop heighten your senses while you sample some of Kanonkop’s most exquisite offerings. These exclusive sessions cater to groups ranging from 10 to 20 people, promising a truly immersive exploration of their exceptional creations.

“I can’t help but be captivated by Kanonkop,” shares Luvo Ntezo, head sommelier at One&Only Cape Town. “Their story is intertwined with the magic of pinotage. It’s here, in these hallowed grounds, that the iconic wine was born – a quintessential South African treasure embraced by the Simonsberg Mountains. You absolutely must taste the Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage.”

Wayve, known for its own reverence for exceptional wines, agrees wholeheartedly. “Kanonkop is a haven for those who savor robust reds. Prepare to indulge in wines that rival the very best in the world. In fact, their Paul Sauer red blend was the first South African wine to receive an impressive 100-point rating from the renowned Tim Atkin. Despite its worldwide acclaim, this winery remains grounded in the classic traditions of Stellenbosch. And if you’re lucky, you may even witness the firing of the historic cannon during your visit.”

Welcome to Villiera Wines

Hi, I’m here to introduce you to Villiera Wines, a place known for its fantastic South African sparkling wine (also known as cap classique). But that’s not all – they also produce excellent red and white wines, including their limited-edition Reserve range. When you visit their tasting room, called The Wine Sanctuary, you’ll be greeted by comfy leather chairs and sofas, a cozy fireplace, and a beautiful oak-shaded terrace. Plus, you have the option to take a self-guided tour of their cellar.

But what sets Villiera Wines apart is their dedication to sustainable farming and conservation. They have an adjoining wildlife sanctuary where you can spot zebras, giraffes, and a variety of antelope. And get this – they’ve planted over 100,000 indigenous trees in the sanctuary! It’s a truly special place.

“Villiera Wines is a great starting point for your Stellenbosch wine adventure,” says Dan. “Their tasting room offers some of the best cap classiques in South Africa. You have to try their non-vintage brut and brut rosé, as well as their vintage Monro Brut 2015. And if you’re into reds and whites, they’ve got you covered too. Don’t miss out on their amazing Domaine Grier wines from Roussillon, France.”

And that’s not all. As Malu points out, Villiera Wines not only offers exquisite wines but also has a wildlife sanctuary where you can go on game drives. How cool is that?

Now, let’s talk about the cost. For R90, you can enjoy a tasting of 6 cap classiques. If you prefer red or white wines, it’s R80 for 6 tastings. They also have a special offer called “Wines of the Week” for R80, which includes 2 sparkling wines, 2 whites, and 2 reds. If you’re interested in their Reserve wines, it’ll cost you between R20 and R40 per tasting. And if you want to treat yourself, they have a cap classique and nougat pairing for R150.

Before you plan your visit, here are a few things to keep in mind. Booking is essential for the game drives, and it costs R300 per adult. But here’s the exciting part – the game drive includes a complimentary wine tasting! For children under 15 years, the game drive is R150. Now that’s a deal!

When it comes to opening times, they are open from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. On Saturdays and public holidays, they close at 3pm. If you have any questions or want to book your visit, you can reach them at 021 865 2002 or wine@villiera.co.za.
